Checking Your Credit Score
The most common way to catch unauthorized activity is by checking your credit information. If an account appears that you did not initiate, someone is using your Social Security number.
You can check your credit score using a third-party service like or check with your credit card company to see if they have such a feature.
If youre applying for a new line of credit and get turned down, this could mean that there are fraudulent accounts or activities that are affecting your credit score.
How To Check Your Social Security Statement
The Social Security Administration used to send paper statements to wage earners each year. These statements listed your wages and Social Security credits for the year, and a tally of your lifetime earnings and credits. Based on this information, the agency provided an estimate of your future Social Security retirement, disability and survivor benefits. If you haven’t seen one of these statements in a while, don’t be surprised. As of 2011, Social Security no longer mails annual statements to most workers. However, you can still check your statement online through the the agency’s website.
Go to the Social Security Administration website at ssa.gov.

Check The Social Security Administration’s Math
Your statement includes a record of the earnings on which you’ve paid taxes and an estimate of the benefits you will receive at various retirement ages: 62, 67, and 70. It is always wise for you to check the SSA’s numbers. Don’t be surprised if you uncover an error. Some government-watchers estimate that the SSA makes mistakes on at least 3% of the total official earnings records it keeps.
When you check your record, make sure that the Social Security number noted on your earnings statement is your own, and make sure the earned income amounts listed on the agency’s records mesh with your own records of earnings as listed on your income tax forms or pay stubs.

What If Someone Steals My Social Security Number
All of this is of course very interesting, but lets bring it back to the point of this article: what if some bad guy steals, obtains, guesses at, or otherwise gets hold of your Social Security Number? As it happens, all kinds of bad things!
Because you have to have a Social Security Number to get a job in the United States , crooks are very fond of stealing SSNs specifically for the purpose of selling them to people who do not already have permission to work in the United States, so that those people can get a job.
Nothing is wrong with people getting jobs, of course, but if they are using your Social Security Number, it can cause untold confusion and issues with your taxes and your Social Security benefits. You could even LOSE your Social Security benefits and that can be hundreds of thousands of dollars.
As you can see, it is very important for you to be able to tell whether someone is using your Social Security Number without your permission. In this article, I will show you several methods of detecting whether your Social Security Number has been compromised.
When Should I Take My Social Security Retirement Benefits
Waiting to collect Social Security benefits may be beneficial if youre able to do so. While the age to receive your full retirement benefit is 66-67 , you can begin collecting Social Security benefits as early as age 62. But each month you wait to start collecting increases your eligible benefits.4
Once you reach full retirement age, youre entitled to 100% of the benefits calculated from your lifetime earnings. If you wait until age 70 to begin collecting Social Security, your retirement benefit will be 32% larger.3
However, waiting may not be the right choice for everyone. Your advisor will help you determine an approach that reflects your options and your personal situation. For example, they may consider:
- Varying tax rates on Social Security income
- Capital gains and IRA withdrawals
- Health issues

How Credits Are Earned
Since 1978, when you work and pay Social Security taxes, you earn up to a maximum of four credits per year.
The amount of earnings it takes to earn a credit may change each year. In 2021, you earn one Social Security or Medicare credit for every $1,470 in covered earnings each year. You must earn $5,880 to get the maximum four credits for the year.
During your lifetime, you might earn more credits than the minimum number you need to be eligible for benefits. These extra credits do not increase your benefit amount. The average of your earnings over your working years, not the total number of credits you earn, determines how much your monthly payment will be when you receive benefits.

What Are The Limitations Of An Ssn Validator
The USA Trace SSN Verification tool and other tools like it do not match a social security number with a name. They only confirm that a particular SSN is valid. Social security number issue dates are not exact and sometimes give a year range rather than exact year of birth. Persons born overseas or who became US citizens later in life will also not have received their number at birth. Regarding the state of issue, a US person born overseas would be issued an SSN from a state corresponding to a parent.
Free SSN verifications cannot be used for official purposes. If youre an employer or landlord, you cannot use the information from a free SSN validation for employment or renting decisions. Likewise, instant social security number validations cant be used for credit/lending decisions. A verification will not help you find someone with a social security number nor do they provide you with any other background check information. The Government No Longer Is Mailing Paper Statements To Most Workers
We used to receive our Social Security statements by mail once a year. I understand the government stopped sending paper statements. How can we check for possible errors?
SLIDE SHOW: 10 Things You Must Know About Social Security
The Social Security Administration did discontinue mailing paper statements in 2011, but reversed course in February and resumed mailing statements to workers age 60 and older who are not already receiving Social Security benefits. It will also mail a statement to workers at age 25.
Everyone else can check their Social Security statements online. Go to Social Securitys MyStatement and create a My Social Security account. For security, youll need to provide information about yourself that matches the information on file with Social Security, as well as some information that matches your Experian credit report. Its a good idea to check statements for errors once a year.
In addition to showing your earnings record, the statement shows your estimated Social Security payments at your full retirement age , at age 70 and at age 62. The statement also shows the amount of survivors benefits your child and spouse may receive.

What Is The New Total Contributions Approach
The new Total Contributions Approach means that the total number ofPRSI contributions you paid, instead of when they were paid, are taken intoaccount when the DSP assesses your application for a pension.
The TCA calculation includes the new HomeCaringPeriods Scheme. The changes benefit people who spent time outside the paidworkplace, while raising a family or in a caring role.
If you reached pension age on or after 1 September 2012, your pension ratecan be calculated in 2 ways: using the average rule or using the newTCA see Rules below. The DSP will carry out both calculations andchoose whichever gives you the better rate of pension.
The NationalPensions Framework has proposed that the TCA be introduced to replace thecurrent average rule. However, legislation is required before anychanges may come into effect.

Get A Social Security Statement
The Social Security Administration maintains an online service that lets you find out what you have paid into Social Security, how many hours of work your employers have reported each quarter, and what your expected benefits would be if you were to retire or go on disability in the near future.
You may think that would be wonderful since the worker reporting hours to your Social Security account is moving you closer to vesting your Social Security benefit, but in fact, you can have your expected Social Security payments greatly reduced if someone is reporting low-wage labor to your account. So you want to clear up any double-dipping of your Social Security account.
Requesting your statement is straightforward. You will need to create a my Social Security account if you dont already have one. You can access the sign-in/account creation page here. Once logged in, you can request a Social Security statement to print out from your account. If you prefer a low-tech approach, you can fill out a request form and mail it in, and get a statement mailed to you in 4 to 6 weeks.

Number Of Credits Needed For Survivors Benefits
The number of credits needed for family members to be eligible for survivors benefits depends on your age when you die. The younger you are, the fewer credits needed. Nobody needs more than 40 credits.
Under a special rule, we can pay benefits to your children and your spouse caring for your children, even if your record doesn’t have the number of credits needed. They can get benefits if you have credits for one and one-half year’s work in the three years before your death.
If you are already receiving retirement or disability benefits at the time of your death, we will pay your survivors based on that entitlement. We will not have to determine your credits again.
