Submitting Your Application By Mail Or In Person
The final step is to submit the SS-5 form and your original or certified documents to your local Social Security office or card center, either by mail or in person. You can find the address online using the Social Security Administration’s Field Office Locator.
If you apply by mail, the office or center will mail your original documents back to you along with your new Social Security card.
One advantage of going in person is that you eliminate the possibility that sensitive or difficult-to-replace personal documents, such as your original birth certificate, driver’s license, or passport, will get lost or stolen in the mail. If you have any questions, you can also call that office beforehand and ask which documents you need to bring with you.
Generally, the Social Security Administration says, it will take two to four weeks to process your application and send you your card.

Ways To Check The Status Of Your Application
There are two ways to check the status of your Social Security Disability application:
- You can check the status of your application online at the SSA website. It takes a minute or so to locate a particular file, but this is the most convenient and fastest way to find out the status of your application. You’ll need to create a “my Social Security” account online, which should take only a short time.
- You contact the SSA by phone and speak with a representative. They will be able to let you know when your application was turned over to your local Disability Determination Services office. Since these offices process your application, talking to one of their representatives will provide you with detailed information regarding the status of your claim.
For both methods of checking your application, you will need:
- Your Personal Information
- Your Address
Adopted Child Or Other Relative

Initial Application Or Reconsideration
For cases pending at the initial claim level and the reconsideration level , it is often more productive for you to speak directly with the disability examiner who is evaluating your claim. Your disability examiner works at a state agency called Disability Determination Services , not the actual Social Security Administration . Disability examiners are typically easy to reach by phone, and you can obtain the telephone number for your local DDS from your local Social Security office. There is at least one DDS office in each state; find your state article for a list of the DDS offices in all states.
When you call the DDS, state that you are calling for the status of your case. Typically, the person who answers the phone will ask you for your Social Security number and then connect you with your claims examiner, who can quickly tell you whether or not your case is pending. If your case is still pending, ask the examiner if there is anything you can do to help expedite your claim.
If you filed a request for reconsideration and you haven’t received a decision within two months of filing the reconsideration request, you should call DDS to check the status of the claim.
Check Your Credit Report
The Social Security Administration can tell you if someone is working on your SSN and the IRS can tell you if someone is filing taxes on it, but only your credit agencies can tell you if someone is using your SSN to acquire and use credit in your name.
There are three major credit reporting agencies in the United States:;Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. They each have slightly different methodologies and scoring programs, but they all more or less provide the same service.
You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report every 12 months . By contacting each service and requesting your report, you can immediately spot any suspicious activity on your credit accounts. Look for credit card applications, loan applications, and any debt you dont recognize.
Requesting your reports is simple:
- TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289 transunion.com
is a reputable service, and if you sign up for it you can keep a monthly eye on your credit score and your credit history, making it very difficult for an identity thief to put one over you in the long run.

If You Have A Lawyer Or Representative

Disability claimants who are represented by a disability lawyer or non-lawyer Social Security disability advocate can allow their representatives to make these calls on their behalf. Your representative should periodically check the status of your case for you, both for the purpose of staying up-to-date on the case and also to avoid missing deadlines.
Having said that, if your lawyer or disability representative can’t give you an update and you haven’t heard anything in a while, you should protect yourself by also checking on your case yourself every month or so.
