Did Biden Vote To Cut Social Security

Don't Miss

Biden Vs Sanders On Social Security And Medicare

Verify: Did Joe Biden Vote to tax Social Security benefits twice during his Senate career?

Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden have been trading barbs over Bidens record on Social Security and Medicare. Sanders accuses Biden of saying on many occasions we should cut Social Security, and Biden accuses Sanders of lying and using a doctored video to mislead voters about his position.

Bidens campaign has focused on a short video clip circulated by the Sanders campaign of a Biden speech in 2018 in which he appears to express praise for former House Speaker Paul Ryans tax plan passed during Trumps presidency words that the Biden campaign says were delivered sarcastically. Given the way certain phrases were delivered and a fuller context of Bidens comments, it was misleading for a Sanders campaign staffer to claim that Biden said Ryan was correct to go after Social Security & Medicare.

However, other examples cited by the Sanders camp show that Biden has in the past been willing in budget negotiations with Republicans to at least consider things such as raising the age of eligibility or recalculating cost-of-living increases for these programs for the elderly. Thats short of saying we should cut Social Security, as Sanders put it, though Bidens past comments have been criticized by some liberals who believe any cuts to the safety net programs are non-negotiable. Sanders views raising the age of eligibility as a cut.

The Ryan Plan

Well leave it up to readers to interpret Bidens adjustments remark.

Social Security Is Here When You Need It Most

Disability benefits offer a financial lifeline when people are struck by a serious medical condition that makes it impossible for them to work and provide for themselves and their family. Benefits are for medical conditions that are expected to last at least one year or result in death. The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs are the largest of the federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities. Our friends, family members, and neighbors, including wounded warriors and the chronically ill, rely on these vital programs:

  • Social Security Disability Insurance pays benefits to you and certain members of your family if you are “insured,” meaning that you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.
  • Supplemental Security Income makes payments to people who have low income and few resources, and who are age 65 and older, blind, or disabled.

Congressional Testimony Before House Subcommittee On Social Security And Oversight

Verify: Did Biden vote to tax social security benefits?

On February 7, Social Securitys acting deputy commissioner for retirement and disability policy, Marianna LaCanfora, testified before the House Committee on Ways and Means, Subcommittees on Social Security and Oversight. She detailed how Social Security determines whether a beneficiary is incapable of managing his or her benefit payments.

She said, Early on in Social Securitys history, Congress recognized that some beneficiaries were incapable of managing their benefits and amended the Social Security Act to allow us to appoint representative payees for such beneficiaries. Representative payees help our vulnerable beneficiaries by managing their benefit payments for their basic needs.

Ms. LaCanfora also detailed the three types of evidence required to make a capability determination, the process of selecting a representative payee, appeal rights, and Social Securitys improvements in our process of determining capability.

Fact Check: Trump Says 22 Million People Were Projected To Die From Covid

Ben Kamisar

Trump, defending his administration’s pandemic response, claimed Thursday that “2.2 million people modeled out were expected to die” from the coronavirus.

Trump has made this claim previously that original projections for coronavirus deaths in America said the country would lose 2.2 million people to the virus.

This is misleading. Trump is referring to a model , which did predict that 2.2 million people in America could die from the virus, but only if no mitigation efforts whatsoever were in place.

In late March, White House Coronavirus Task Force response coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx told NBC’s “Today” that the projection of 1.6 million to 2.2 million deaths referred to what could happen if America did “nothing” to stop the spread of the virus.

“If we do things together, well, almost perfectly, we could get in the range of 100,000 to 200,000 fatalities,” Birx said at the time.

As of Thursday evening, there have been 223,262 deaths attributed to the virus in America, according to NBC News data.

The candidates squared off on the pandemic to start off Thursdays debate, with Trump saying that if he hadnt acted as he did, way more people would have died, and Biden saying the presidents incompetence needlessly cost thousands of additional lives.

With cases and hospitalizations on the rise, Welker asked both candidates how they will fight the upcoming stage of the pandemic.

We rounding the corner, Trump claimed. Its going away.

Joe Biden Tried To Cut Social Security Medicaid And Medicare For 40 Years

    Branko MarceticJacobinDavid Lienemann/ White House

Looking back in 1981, Biden said he had been persuaded to evolve by his fellow lawmakers.

I have been made a believer over the last nine years in the Senate, he said. The teachings of economists, he continued, had made him reluctant to listen to his Republican colleagues about the dangers of deficit spending, particularly when he was just an impressionable 29-year-old not too long out of college. But eventually, he was worn down. As I listened over the years in this body, I became more and more a believer in balanced budgets, he said.

Following what he termed an olive branch from Reagan a spending freeze that also raised taxes he linked arms with two Republican colleagues on the Senate Budget Committee to introduce his own freeze proposal in 1984. Acknowledging it would be labeled draconian , Bidens plan cut $239 billion from the deficit over three years, almost $100 billion more than even Reagans proposal, and proposed doing it partly by eliminating scheduled increases for Social Security and Medicare beneficiaries. It would, he said, shock the living devil out of everyone in the US Senate.

Bidens antipathy to government spending and deficits found its most radical expression in the form of the balanced budget constitutional amendment, which he had viewed as laughable and dangerous in previous decades. But with the advent of the 1990s, he now warmed up to it.
