Did Trump Say He Would Cut Social Security

The Quiet Before The Storm Mute Button Prompts Calmer Debate So Far

Trump Lied About Not Cutting Social Security

The mute button so far has resulted in a calmer debate as Trump and Biden debate the response to Covid-19.

The candidates are criticizing each other without crosstalk, and the moderator has control over the debate as a result. Trump also appears to be taking notes, which he has not done in previous debates. He has also been clearer and more coherent than in past debates.

Trump has said this before, and it requires more context.

“Now they say I am immune. Whether it’s for a month or lifetime, nobody has been able to say that but I’m immune,” Trump said Thursday.

There is some evidence that coronavirus infection may confer immunity that lasts for a few months after a person has recovered from a Covid-19 infection, though research is ongoing.

Some infections result in lifelong immunity while other infections will produce short-term immunity in recovered patients. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has said he believes the coronavirus confers at least some short-term immunity.

In his response to Trump’s answer on the pandemic, Biden refers to a scathing editorial that The New England Journal of Medicine published earlier this month.

The 35 editors who signed the editorial did not call out President Trump by name, the article is filled with references to his actions.

Trump again took a shot at Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, comparing the coronavirus restrictions in her state to being imprisoned.

The Democratic governor and Trump have feuded in recent days after the FBI thwarted a kidnapping plot against her. The conspirators were so-called militiamen who used similar language to the president’s.

Whitmer placed blame at the presidents feet, calling him complicit. Trump has pushed back and accused Whitmer of wanting to be a dictator.

Trump obviously came into the debate with the goal of behaving more like a traditional president than the version that harangues moderators and rivals. But the loss of bluster hasnt been complemented by the presence of logic.

“I take full responsibility,” Trump said of responding to Covid-19. “Its Chinas fault.”

It may even sound less attached to reality when its said in a calm voice than bellowed. Now, hes spouting disinformation theories.

Making an argument for schools to re-open, Trump spoke of his son Barron, 14, who also tested positive for the coronavirus earlier this month.

We have to open our schools,” Trump said. “As an example, I have a young son. He also tested positive. By the time I spoke to the doctor a second time, he was fine, it just went away. Young people, I guess its their immune systems.”

Cindy Mccain On Why She’s Backing Biden: ‘every Time You Think It Couldn’t Get Much Worse It Does’

Cindy McCain, the widow of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., campaigned for Biden with Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., Wednesday and told voters why she believes the former vice president should be elected.

“Every time you think it couldn’t get much worse, it does,” McCain said about why she’s backing Biden during the virtual event for Minnesota Women for Biden.

And so for me I know people want to figure out why I would I would vote for a Democrat number one, but Ive known Joe Biden for 40 years, said McCain.

Times Donald Trump Promised Not To Cut Social Security Medicare And Medicaid

The Republican budget plan, with its efforts to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, is not just immoral and bad economic policy. It violates numerous promises that Donald Trump made to the American people during his campaign promises that he repeated again and again. Donald Trump made it a central part of his campaign that he would not cut these essential programs. He asked millions of working class and elderly people to vote for him on that promise, and they did. Trump now has a choice: He can tell the American people that these campaign promises were lies. Or he can instruct his Republican colleagues to end their efforts to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and inform them that if they dont, he will veto any bills that cut those life-and-death programs.

              1. The Answer to both Social Security and Medicare is a robust growing economy not cuts on the elderly.

              2. A robust growing economy is how to fix Social Security and Medicare not cuts on Seniors.

              4. As Republicans, if you think you are going to change very substantially for the worse Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security in any substantial way, and at the same time you think you are going to win elections, it just really is not going to happen.

              5. Im not a cutter. Ill probably be the only Republican that doesnt want to cut Social Security.

              7. May 7, 2015: I was the first & only potential GOP candidate to state there will be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid.

The Claim: President Donald Trump Promised To ‘terminate’ Social Security If He Is Reelected

Donald Trump is on track to break his promises on Medicaid ...

Recent posts from Social Security Works a nonprofit focused on expanding Social Security, improving Medicare and lowering the cost of prescription drugs claim that President Donald Trump will end Social Security if he is reelected.

“Donald Trump says he will ‘terminate’ Social Security if reelected,” a post on Monday reads. “A vote for Trump is a vote to destroy our social security system.”

“Millions of seniors and people with disabilities struggle to make ends meet,” another post from the same day reads. “Yet Donald Trump says he will ‘terminate’ Social Security if reelected. That’s a disastrous plan.”

The posts come after Trump signed a series of executive orders on Aug. 8 intended to provide relief from the detrimental economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Pelosi: Biden Shouldn’t Debate Trump ‘legitimize A Conversation With Him’

WASHINGTON House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Thursday that she doesnt think Joe Biden should debate President Donald Trump in the three scheduled this fall ahead of the election because she said Trump will probably act in a way that is beneath the dignity of the presidency.

Pelosi volunteered her opinion at a weekly news conference at the Capitol during which she also said that if Biden wins the White House and Democrats retain control of the House, they will have the ability to expose Trumps tax returns that he has refused for years to release.

Don’t tell anybody who told you this especially don’t tell Joe Biden I don’t think that there should be any debates, she said. I do not think that the president of the United States has comported himself in a way that anybody has any association with truth, evidence, data and facts. I wouldn’t legitimize a conversation with him, nor a debate in terms of the presidency of the United States.

              Rebecca Shabad and Mike Memoli

WASHINGTON Several hundred former aides to President George W. Bush and Sen. John McCain announced Thursday that they are endorsing Joe Biden for president.

The statements of support for the Democratic nominee come as President Donald Trump prepares to accept his party’s nomination on the final night of the Republican National Convention.

Meanwhile, more than 100 former staff of McCain’s congressional offices and campaigns also endorsed Biden for president.

Covid Tests Masks Not Required For Trump Speech

              Hallie Jackson and Winston Wilde

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said Thursday that “a number of” GOP convention guests at the White House tonight will have been tested for COVID-19 but that “you make choices individually.”

“I think it’s a pretty safe environment, given the circumstances,” Meadows said. “I’m not worried about that based on the protocols that we have in place.”

Chairs set up on the lawn ahead of the speech were well under 6 feet apart, flouting local social distancing guidelines. With a crowd of more than 1,000 people, tonight’s speech appears to be the largest non-socially-distanced White House event in the COVID era. The crowd is made up of a mix of GOP lawmakers, delegates, friends, family and donors from all over the country some of whom have flown in.

              Masks were not required.

Cher And Lizzo Lend Their Voices To Biden Campaign

              Natalia Abrahams

Singer and songwriter Lizzo will be hitting the campaign trail for the Democratic candidate. Tomorrow, she will be making two stops in the Detroit area to discuss early voting, with a focus on young people.

Last week, Lizzo wore a custom Christian Siriano dress to the Billboard Music Awards and told the audience “there’s power in your voice.”

Superstar singer Cher will also be hitting the trail for the Biden-Harris ticket. The Grammy-winning singer and Oscar-winning actress will make stops in Nevada and Arizona this weekend on behalf of the campaign.

Pat Lynch: The Democrats Have Walked Away From Us

VERIFY: Did Social Security Admin. say Trump’s proposed tax cuts would deplete Social Security?

The Democrats have walked away from us. They have walked away from police officers and they’ve walked away from the innocent people we protect, Lynch said. Democratic politicians have surrendered our streets and our institutions. The loudest voices have taken control, and our so-called leaders are scrambling to catch up with them.

Its worth noting that, according to The New York Times, major crimes have not risen in NYC and the papers analysis of city data shows that the recent spike in shootings is largely because of the number of arrests for gun crimes has sharply decreased.

                  Taking Scissors To Safety Net

That sinking feeling youll get if Donald Trump is elected to a second term will be caused by plummeting through the hole in your safety net. The one he plans on cutting.

                  Social Security snip, snip.

                  Medicare snip, snip.

                  Medicaid snip, snip.

In his most recent town hall among some friendly hosts from FOX News the president was asked about plans for his next term, should he be reelected. He spoke of how he believes the economic growth will be tremendous. One of the hosts cut in, saying, But if you dont cut something in entitlements

And Trump interrupted, saying, Oh, well be cutting.

The presidents mostly silent press secretary, Arizonas own Stephanie Grisham, tried to soften the blow by asking people not to hear what they actually heard, tweeting, Fake news POTUS was taking about cutting deficits, NOT entitlements.

                  Actually, no.

He was talking about cutting entitlements.

And it isnt the first time hes said this.

Terminating Payroll Tax Could End Social Security Benefits In 2023 Chief Actuary Warns

WASHINGTON The federal governments ability to pay Social Security benefits could stop by mid-2023 if President Donald Trump were to permanently terminate the payroll tax and not offer another revenue source, the chief actuary of the Social Security Administration said Monday.

The chief actuary, Stephen Goss, offered the prediction in a letter to a group of Senate Democrats who requested an analysis of what would happen if the payroll tax is eliminated with no other funding stream for Social Security benefits.

Fact Check: Who Pays Tariffs Trump Says China Biden Says Taxpayers

Trump, responding to a question about confronting China, said the country is paying billions and billions of dollars” to the U.S. and suggested this was money his administration has used to bail out American farmers.

Biden interjected to say that was taxpayer money going to the farmers.

So, who is paying for tariffs?

Weve fact checked this before, and Bidens right. Tariffs are taxes on goods coming in to the U.S., paid by the importer those taxes are largely tacked onto the purchase price paid by American consumers.

Tariffs are designed to make foreign-made goods more expensive, boosting domestic producers or, sometimes, forcing international exporters to slash prices to stay competitive. But there’s no evidence China has been cutting prices to accommodate Trumps tariffs, and theres clear evidence that American families are picking up the tab.

Adam Edelman and Jane C. Timm

Trump claimed that Biden’s running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., supports “socialized medicine.”

“He wants socialized medicine, and it’s not that he wants it his vice president, I mean, she is more liberal than Bernie Sanders and wants it even more,” Trump said.

Harris’ position on health care at least when she was a presidential candidate was, in fact, difficult to pin down. In January 2019, she appeared to call for abolishing all private insurance, only to walk it back in May.

President Trump tested negative for Covid-19 on his way to the debate.

We tested him on the way here and he tested negative, said White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Inside The Debate Hall: Lots Of Masks And Some Notable Vips

Hallie Jackson, Jonathan Allen and Freddie Tunnard

The view from inside the debate hall: masks. Lots of them. We havent seen anyone without one, though, notably, the Trump family hasnt arrived yet. They were the main ones defying the mask mandate at the Cleveland debate.

The presidents motorcade is set to arrive any minute, and Joe Biden is already here. Seats are marked off for some of those members of the first family Melania, Eric and Ivanka Trump. The former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, is also here in the hall as are some former members of Congress: Democrat Lincoln Davis and Republican Jimmy Duncan Jr. among them.

The arena is bigger and less intimate than the room for the first debate in Cleveland, and in another contrast, people are freely mingling and chatting. The vibe is pretty low-key.

Pete Buttigieg has made several viral appearances on Fox News in recent weeks as a Biden surrogate. On Thursday night, he appeared again and offered a retort to the accusations leveled against Hunter Biden.

“If they want to make this about the business deals of a government official, let’s talk about the president of the United States having a secret Chinese bank account,” Buttigieg said.

The Trump campaign had previously sought to push the accusation that Hunter Biden’s relationships in the Ukraine were illegal, and has recently shifted its focus to China.

A View From Inside And Outside The White House Grounds

Rudy Giuliani made several wrong, exaggerated or misleading claims about policing and law enforcement in the U.S. during his RNC speech Thursday.

Speaking about the protests sparked across the U.S. in response to the death of a Black man, George Floyd, under the knee of a White Minneapolis police officer, Giuliani said, Soon protests turned into riots in many other American cities, almost all Democrats.”

He blamed the violence on “Black Lives Matter and ANTIFA” who he said “sprang into action” and”hijacked peaceful protest into vicious brutal riots.”

He added that, in those riots, “people beaten, shot, and killed. Police officers routinely assaulted, badly beaten, and occasionally murdered.

This is all a substantial distortion and exaggeration of the facts.

According to multiplereports, including a Washington Post fact check, there were no signs that that antifa was behind violence at these protests. As of earlier this month, federal prosecutors had not been able to link dozens of people arrested in protests in Portland, Ore., to antifa.

In fact, in at least one instance where a police officer was killed during a protest, the suspect was actually aligned with a far-right extremist group. In Oakland, Air Force Staff Sgt. Steven Carrillo a member of the boogaloo, an online extremist group with violent views is accused of killing a federal officer. Authorities have said he was using nearby peaceful protests as cover.

The daughters of David Dorn, a retired police captain who was shot and killed outside a burglarized St. Louis pawn shop during protests stemming from George Floyd’s death, told The St. Louis American that his widow is exploiting his death to bolster President Trumps agenda.

We know his wife is a Trump supporter, but he was not, Debra White, his daughter, told the paper, referring to his widow, St. Louis Police Sgt. Ann Dorn. He frequently said they were not able to talk about politics, because they were at the opposite ends of the spectrum. I know he would not want his legacy to be for his death to be used to further Trumps law-and-order agenda.

                                  Peter Alexander

The Commission on Presidential Debates’ co-chair Frank Fahrenkopf, Jr., says the two plexiglass barriers placed between each candidates lecterns on stage at Belmont University in Nashville will remain in place at the recommendation of the commissions medical advisors.

Im not sure that the Trump campaign wanted it,” he said on MSNBC.

                                  Fahrenkopf also noted:

Anyone who enters this hall has to pass a covid test and must be wearing a mask.

Both campaigns and their invited guests have agreed to keep their masks in while in audience.

CPD is working with each campaign to confirm their tests.

Fahrenkopf would not answer if people need to show or prove their negative test results to CPD or the debate’s medical advisors
