Background Check By Social Security Number Tips

Our SSN Search uses the location information of the social security number to conduct a background check by social security number: the initial search and then it provides the full background check results . If the preview information youre getting from your SSN Search seems to be giving you results from the wrong state, simply try a background check using the name and last known state to get more relevant results.

Although the people search database often includes public records even if a person has used more than one name , searching all known name variations may yield additional results and information. Cant narrow it down to just one? Dont worry! Unlimited search options are available for a fixed fee often for just pennies more than the cost of a single person search report!

Cant seem to locate the person youre looking for? If you know the name of one of their close friends or relatives, try searching for them. With just a name and a last known state, you should be able to get a current phone number, which will allow you to contact them for more leads.

    The Basics Of Background Checks

To understand background checks, you should know the factors to consider when creating employment screening guidelines:

    • Reporting History. Reporting history is the length of time something adverse can appear on a background check. According to the FCRA, seven years is the standard for convictions and dismissals. After seven years, charges and dismissed cases arent allowed to be reported on background checks or credit checks. Consult your attorney or background check company to create a timeline. Again, seven years is the standard, so go with that to remain compliant with the FCRA.
    • Residence History. Residence history is the number of addresses that a candidate has lived over a period. The information is used by background check companies to find counties to look for criminal records. Many companies choose a current address or their primary residence for the seven years prior.
    • Names & Aliases. Names & Aliases are the names that a background check company searches. Name changes are typically due to marriage or nicknames .
    • Full name

The Enhanced National Check is a national criminal background check with SSN search. This search is a great way to find criminal records under a maiden name, former married name, or alias. We also offer a State version of this search.

The social security number report provides information on a person’s name, aliases, and current & prior addresses. Also, based on availability, it provides date of birth, age, and current and prior phone numbers. This search is an ideal way to locate people, to confirm a social security number, or to obtain an address history.

    Social Security Number Trace

A social security number trace uses the national credit bureaus to verify whether the candidates SSN is valid, and that it matches their legal name, nicknames, aliases, and associated residences on file. It also checks for matches in counties that the person previously resided or worked and financial transactions they made there. It can be used to direct criminal record searches at county-level. Social security number tracing is important to determine whether the SSN is valid and matches the name and birth date provided by the candidate. It can also inform where further searches are necessary and unearth additional information about the candidate to be researched. If they previously were known by other names, such as a maiden name, it can bring forth information linked to that name that may be missed by other verification checks. Important things to know about SSN traces:

If a trace does not match the candidates given details, it will return an alert. Note that sometimes this occurs because the person mistyped their SSN. The trace should then be re-run with the correct number.

    Handling Social Security Numbers

Because of the sensitive nature of Social Security numbers, it is very important that you have a process for protecting and, when necessary, disposing of this information. Documents containing this information should be segregated from less sensitive paperwork and access to these documents should be granted only on a “need to have” basis.

For example, you may wish to restrict access to these documents to senior human resources workers. Meanwhile, hiring managers and administrative staff who may request and collect these documents should be provided with the process for keeping them secure until they are turned over to human resources. In addition, there should also be a process for destroying documents with sensitive employee information after it is no longer necessary to keep these documents on file.

Reputable Companies Ask But It’s Ok For You To Call Them On It

SSN – Social Security Number Trace- Background Checks Demystified

You need your employes’ social security numbers. Employers are one of the few organizations that really need social security numbers, as you have to pay employees, withhold taxes, and pay taxes. It’s important that you have it.

But, it’s not important that you have the social security number of job applicants. You don’t need it at the application stage. Yet, many businesses ask for it in the application stage.

A reader sent me a link to a job application for a reputable company. It included this information about social security numbers:

In other words, we’ll do whatever we want with your social security number, and you can’t apply without giving it to us. I mean, what studies? What statistics? That’s pretty vague.

But, say all the recruiters, we need the social security number to run background checks. Yes–and no. If the job requires a credit check , then you need a social security number to run the check. You also need the candidate to sign a specific release. And you should not be running any of this at the application stage.

You’re going to wait until after you’ve interviewed a candidate to run these checks, so why not wait until that point to ask for their social security number?

It’s not just for the job candidate’s benefit–it’s for yours.

I contacted the company that has this disclaimer on their job applications and asked why they needed the social security number at application. I received this response:

Can You Use An Itin Instead Of A Social Security Number

One question we get asked quite frequently is whether you can use a persons Individual Tax Identification Number as an alternative to their SSN when running a background check.

The simple answer to this is, not really. People are issued with an ITIN for tax purposes. It is a code that can be used to facilitate the submission of tax information and the payment of tax bills.

This information is not part of public record and therefore submitting an ITIN will, more often than not, fail to generate any information that will help with a background check.

The only possible exception to this is if someone has used their ITIN to apply for credit or a loan. This would mean their ITIN would be held on their credit record and might show up on a background check. But these exceptions are not commonplace and will usually not provide sufficient confirmation to be beneficial to a background checking process.

Be Alert: Running A Background Check Without A Social Security Number

Ultimately, it is up to you as the landlord to determine whether or not you want to require a Social Security number on your rental application. Of course, this depends on whether your state or local governments permit this type of screening requirement.

Regardless of what you decide, ensure that you are consistent across all applications. It is a violation of Fair Housing Laws to ask one rental applicant to provide their SSN when other applicants did not need to do this. Choose whether or not you will absolutely require this number, and then stick to it.

Dont rule out tenants just because they are unsure about providing their SSN work with them to find a way around this issue as this is a common and reasonable fear. There are ways to do tenant screening without a Social Security number, after all, so you can try to provide alternatives when possible.

Reasons To Conduct A Ssn Trace Report

Since they were first created in 1936, more than 450 million social security numbers have been issued to US citizens and permanent residents. SSNs are primarily used for identification and taxpaying services. Without a SSN, you cant obtain credit, receive government services, or buy a home. The SSN is essential to everyday life. However, what many may not know is that the SSN is also a historical record that aids employers during the hiring process. It is a useful tool that delivers essential information about candidates during a background check.

It Can Generate A More Complete Address History And Expose Gaps

Candidates completing background check authorizations may intentionally or unintentionally neglect to include all historical addresses. A SSN trace fills in the blanks by generating a list of a candidates current and past addresses. In some cases, that list may be more complete than what was provided by the candidate. Having a more complete address history for a candidate allows background screeners to determine if it makes sense to conduct a criminal records search for additional locations beyond the candidates current county of residence. A SSN trace can also reveal gaps in a candidates address history, which may require additional research.

Should You List A Job You Only Had For A Month

1answer. You should include a one-month job on your resume if you made a valuable contribution during that time, and the experience is relevant to the job that youre now seeking. If, however, you did not do much in the position and did not even really learn anything about the job, then it is okay to leave it off.

S To Take Before Doing Background Checks

    Have a consistent policy.

This is best documented in a flow chart so everyone knows which steps to complete and at which point. Haphazard background verification check processes can cause legal issues if you are only applying some steps to some candidates, such as only doing credit checks on candidates from specific backgrounds.

    Get legal advice.

Background checks can unearth sensitive information and, in some states, you are not able to gather certain information as part of a background check. Talk to a lawyer to make sure your background check does not cause legal issues for your company.

Give candidates a chance to clear up mistakes or misunderstandings.

Information obtained through background checks can be incorrect. Giving candidates a chance to review information can help you save a great candidate that could have been excluded incorrectly.

Use background check services that are FCRA compliant.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act is clear on what you can and cannot do as part of a background check with regards to credit information. This document provides a nice summary of how the information should be treated from the candidate’s perspective.

Do not assume parts of the background check process are routine.

Critical information will often come up in the most mundane steps of the background check. Make sure that hiring managers take the process seriously and that they pay attention to the valuable information obtained.
