Contacting Social Security By Phone

The website is a great place to start, but sometimes the information provided may not seem to address your situation or answer your particular question. So your next step might be to call. Since Social Security doesnt publish the phone numbers of most local offices, you likely have to call the main number at 1-800-772-1213. Even if you have the number of your local office, you’ll probably want to start with the SSAs automated system.

If you call, you can perform many services through the automated system, including requesting a benefit verification letter and/or statement of your benefits, inquiring about the status of a claim, applying for a replacement card, finding the address of your local office, and conducting some business related to Medicare.

If the automated system isnt enough, you can speak to a representative between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Social Security Administration provides interpreters free of charge. You can call 800-772-1213 to speak with an interpreter who speaks Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, Farsi, French, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hmong, Italian, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, or Vietnamese. You can also schedule in-person appointments, during which time the Social Security Administration office will arrange for an interpreter.

Social Security’s Customer Service Challenges

We have some challenges, as everybody knows, in delivering the proper service to our customers, Saul told AARP in February 2020. The 800 number, that has been a major problem, major concern for all our customers. If you called in, you would find you had an unacceptable waiting time sometimes thirty minutes, sometimes forty minutes.

To his credit, Saul announced plans to attack the problem when he took the job last year, calling improved customer service his top priority. Since then, he brought on 500 teleservice reps, which he told AARP cut down call time by about 50%.

He said another 500 phone reps would be hired later this year, though that was before the pandemic. In February, he told AARP: I think if you watch over the next six months, we will get the call centers down to the proper waiting time, which will be close to zero. That’s a prediction that I’m willing to make here, and I believe we will succeed in doing this

Whether that prediction will come true given how the world of work has changed due to the coronavirus is anyones guess.

In January, Saul also reversed a 2012 decision to close Social Security offices at noon on Wednesdays. From then until the coronavirus shutdown, all its offices were open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

Generally, we advise people to file for Medicare benefits 3 months before age 65. Remember, Medicare benefits can begin no earlier than age 65. If you are already receiving Social Security, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B without an additional application. However, because you must pay a premium for Part B coverage, you have the option of turning it down. You will receive a Medicare card about two months before age 65. If you would like to file for Medicare only, you can apply by calling 1-800-772-1213. Social Security Services You Can’t Get Online

To be perfectly clear, you can still do all of the things on the list above in person if you choose to do so. Even though most commonly accessed Social Security services are offered online doesn’t mean that handling them that way the best option for you. Many people simply prefer to handle these things in person or over the phone — and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. For example, my 87-year-old grandmother isn’t going to log on to if she loses her Medicare card, no matter how much more convenient it may be.

And then there are the things you can’t yet do online. I mentioned that some people can apply for a replacement Social Security card online, but in fact, that option is not available for much of the population. Specifically, in order to get a replacement card online, you need to be over 18, not requesting a name change, and live in one of eight states or Washington, D.C. Everyone else still needs to fill out an application and present their original birth certificate or other identifying documents. You can do this in person at the Social Security office, or by mail, but I never recommend sending original identifying documents in the mail.

Survivor benefits are another thing you can only apply for in person, as the documentation requirements vary depending on your relationship to the deceased, and some of the lists of questions survivors have to answer can be lengthy.

What If I Need To Apply For A Replacement Ssn Card And My Only Option Is To Mail My Application And Identity Documentation Since I Need My Drivers License To Drive Is There An Alternative To Mailing My Dl State Identification Card Or Passport

Date: March 5, 2021

Usually, a SSN card applicant must submit the document with the highest quality for proving identity. We call this a primary identity document. In most cases, for a U.S. citizen, this is a State-issued drivers license. If the primary identity document is not available, we would then allow a person to submit an original secondary form of identity.

SSA is temporarily allowing people to mail in an original or certified secondary identity document with their paper Social Security Number application if they cannot request a replacement SSN card online. Acceptable secondary level identity documents must meet the rigorous document evaluation standards for authenticity, and have biographical data such as date of birth, age, etc.

Below are examples of primary and secondary level documents that are acceptable.

  • Primary

For a list of additional acceptable secondary level identity documents, see chart in RM 10210.420.
