Does Experian Ask For Your Social Security Number

Don't Miss

What Kind Of Information Was Impacted

Why Robinhood Asks For Your SSN [Does Robinhood Need Your SSN?]

The impacted information may include full names, addresses, telephone numbers, Social Security numbers, drivers license information, passport information, financial information including bank routing and account numbers, health and related benefit information, disability information, and birthdates, as well as other personal information provided to UC. Information provided by students who participated in the 2020 University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey was also impacted and posted to the internet by the threat actor.

As a result of a thorough investigation, the University has identified individual community members whose information was impacted by the Accellion event and, as of June 30 and July 1, 2021, sent the appropriate individual notifications via Experian. UC community members are being notified via USPS mail where current physical addresses are available. If the University does not have a physical address, but does have an email address, it will send the notification via email. The University worked deliberately, while taking care to provide accurate information, as quickly as it could.

Why Are My New Alerts Not Available

Your Social Security number and new account alerts might not be available because:

  • Youve opted out.
  • Key information is mismatched or missing .
  • Your credit history is too new.
  • You opened your Discover Card account within the last 7 months
  • Your Discover Card account status is not in good standing.
  • You have a foreign address.
  • You have a credit freeze placed on your credit report.

What To Do When Your Ssn Has Been Stolen

If youve recently noticed suspicious activity suggesting that youre a victim of SSN fraud, then you should take action immediately. Beyond exploiting your personal information for financial gain, the thieves could also use it to block you out of important accounts so they can continue their illegal activities.

  • Keep an Eye Out for Suspicious Activity: First of all, keep an eye on your bank accounts. If you find suspicious transactions, flag and report them to your bank. The Office of Inspector General recommends checking your Social Security earnings statement to ensure the accuracy of your reported wages. They also suggest that you block electronic access to your Social Security accounts.
  • Freeze Your Credit, and Add a Credit Alert: If you know that your Social Security number has been stolen, you should take immediate action by freezing your credit and placing an alert on your credit. This will not stop bad actors from finding other ways to misuse your SSN, but it will alert government agencies and the three major credit agencies. To freeze your credit, contact the following credit agencies:Experian: call 1-888-397-3742. Also, see the fraud alert and page.TransUnion: call 1-800-680-7289. Also, see the fraud-alert and page.

Phishing And Vishing Identity Theft Scamsthe Experian

You may have received an email like the one below that looks very authentic, like it came from Experian, or a phone call about the same subject. It is an attempt to get you to enter confidential information (typically a social security number, name, address, bank account information, etc., to allow the scammers to steal your identity and open credit cards in your name.

This email was not sent by Experian Experian is a victim as well. This is referred to as spoofing or “vishing” . If you receive an email similar to the one below, DO NOT click on the link, and do not enter any information on the forms there.

The website that the link leads to is a spoof a fake website, not created by Experian. It goes to cid=1099, not Experian! When you enter the information they ask for, you will simply be handing the thieves the keys to your bank accounts. That is how spoofing, phishing and vishing works.

Remember, no reputable business would send you an email or a phone call requesting your personal account information. Any such email you receive asking for this information should be considered phony and brought to the attention of the business being ‘phished’.

Anytime you need to go to a website for your bank, credit card companies or other personal, financial or confidential information do not follow a link in an email just type their address in your browser directly

What Does It Mean To Set Up A Fraud Alert

Fraud alerts can be placed on your credit reports for free, and there are two different types:

    • An initial fraud alert can be placed if you believe you are, or may become, a victim of fraud or identity theft. The fraud alert lasts for one year. If you want to keep it active on your credit reports, you’ll need to renew it after that time. When you or someone else attempts to open an account in your name or attempts to make changes on an existing account, such as increasing the credit limit, the lender or creditor must take reasonable steps to confirm you are who you say you are, such as through contacting you by phone at a number you provide, before completing the request.

Placing an initial fraud alert also allows you to request a free copy of your credit reports every 12 months from the three nationwide credit bureaus, in addition to the one free copy from each credit bureau you’re entitled to under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

    • An extended fraud alert can be placed if you are a victim of fraud or identity theft. It requires a copy of a valid police or law enforcement agency report or a Federal Trade Commission Identity Theft Report. An extended fraud alert is similar to an initial fraud alert but lasts for seven years. With an extended fraud alert, a lender or creditor is required to verify your identity in person or by phone at a number you provide before opening new accounts or making changes to existing accounts.

How To Resolve Social Security Number Variations

If, after reviewing the report, you believe the variations are due to credit fraud, you should contact Experian to notify us and to dispute the information. You can also visit our Fraud Center to learn how to respond to fraud and protect your credit information.

If the variation does not seem to be the result of fraud, simply contact the creditor that reported the variation and ask them to correct their records. After the creditor updates its records, the new information will be reported to Experian and your credit report will be updated.

If you are unsure as to which of your creditors reported the variation, you can call the toll-free telephone number provided on your credit report for additional assistance. If the variation is not associated with one of your accounts, Experian can delete it upon your request.

What Happens If I Place A Freeze On My Credit File

However, you should be aware that using a security freeze to take control over who gets access to the personal and financial information in your credit report may delay, interfere with, or prohibit the timely approval of any subsequent request or application you make regarding a new loan, credit, mortgage, or any other account involving the extension of credit.

Pursuant to federal law, you cannot be charged to place or lift a security freeze on your credit report. Contact the three major credit bureaus directly to place a security freeze on your credit file.
