Does Lifelock Protect Social Security Number

Don't Miss

Tip : Consider An Identity Theft Protection Service

LifeLock Member Review: Jamie A | LifeLock

As identity thieves continue to evolve their methods for obtaining personal information, protecting your Social Security number is vital to protecting your identity.

Protecting your Social Security number doesnt have to be a do-it-yourself affair. An identity theft protection service can help. For instance, it may be able to alert you if your SSN has been found on the dark web. The cost of an identity theft protection service typically ranges from $10 to $35 per month.

Some identity theft protection services include features to monitor your credit reports, alert you when new accounts are opened in your name, or when banks, credit card companies or other financial services providers check your credit.

For example, if you recently bought a car, you might receive an alert for the new loan. However, if you receive an alert that a new credit card was opened in your name, and you didnt apply for one, that might be a sign of fraud. Some identity theft protection services allow you to respond to alerts via email, phone, and text messages.

Mcafee Identity Theft Protection Standard

McAfee’s identity theft protection service is the least expensive we’ve seen for a year of coverage. It does have a $1 trial for the first month, but you can get a full year for $30 or two years for $70 as introductory pricing for new customers . This is substantially less expensive than the other players we’ve discussed here.

It offers a slick “cyber monitoring” service that constantly scans for credit activity and alerts you if something unusual happens. The company does monitor your Experian credit file but doesn’t connect to either TransUnion or Equifax.

As with most other vendors, it offers to reimburse up to $1 million for identity recovery , and its recovery service will also return up to $10,000 in stolen funds. As an added benefit, if you lose your wallet, the company will do its best to reissue “a variety of contents from IDs and credit cards to concert tickets.”

McAfee is probably best known as an antivirus company founded by its very eccentric eponymous founder, John McAfee. In 2011, Intel bought the company and renamed it Intel Security Group but by 2017, McAfee was back out on its own, having been spun out to TPG Capital .

That doesn’t mean the product itself is bad. Fortunately, just about all of this service is automated and there’s never been any question about McAfee’s software chops. If its automated systems see odd behavior for one of your tracked accounts, those alerts may be your first and best protection when you need to secure your credit.

Apply For A New Ssn As A Last Resort

If you believe youve done everything you can and someone is still using your SSN, you may need to request a new number from the SSA. If you decide to apply for a new number, you will need to prove your identity, age, and U.S. citizenship or immigration status. You will also need to provide evidence that someone is using your old number. The SSA booklet Your Social Security Number and Card explains the application process.

Bear in mind that a new SSN may not solve all your problems. Think about all the government agencies, banks, credit reporting companies, and others that already have and use your old number.

Once you receive a new SSN, do not use your old number again. Make sure your new number is reported to all agencies that will need it and that those agencies know you no longer use your old number.

Check Employer Verifications At My E

You can also check for the names of employers who have verified your eligibility to work in the U.S. if they went through the Department of Homeland Security E-Verify system. To do that, go to the myE-Verify webpage. If you see an employer whose name you do not recognize, someone else may be using your number to work in the U.S. The site also has a self-lock feature that lets you place a lock on your SSN.

    A Real World Lifelock Experience

Part of my A few months ago, a 90 year-old relative of mine lost her wallet. Since she was a LifeLock member, she immediately called them expecting assistance.

Her experience was subpar. She waited on hold for over an hour. When she finally got through, she was told a identity restoration specialist would call her tomorrow. When she didnt get the call, she called back. After another very lengthy hold, she was told someone would call her back later that day. When that didnt happen, she called back and cancelled the service.

Fortunately, she didnt wait for LifeLock to take action. She cancelled her credit cards, and I assisted in getting her replacement IDs. I set her up with a security freeze on her credit files, something that the first line LifeLock rep didnt suggest.

Knowing which cards were in the wallet was a snap. I had previously taken a photo of every card she carried, just in case she lost her wallet. This came in real handy when it was time to report them missing.

Luckily, she had someone to help her with all of these steps. For all we knew, her wallet was in bad hands, and her accounts could have been compromised. Some folks, though especially those in the older generations may not have someone nearby to assist them.

Make sure that the company youre paying a monthly fee to will be there when you need them!

Tip : Monitor Your Accounts And Be Aware Of New Accounts Being Opened

If someone obtains your SSN, you may find evidence of unlawful use in your bank, credit, or other accounts. Consider setting up alerts with your financial institutions to flag unusual activity, such as withdrawals or purchases over a certain amount. Watch for changes in your credit score. And check your credit reports. Youre entitled to a free credit report every 12 months from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. Go to AnnualCreditReport.com.

    Usps Address Change Verification

This feature aims to alert you if a cyber criminal changes your address at your financial institution.

In case youre wondering how this magic happens, heres a rundown. First, you must provide your banking user IDs and passwords to LifeLock. This way, they can alert you to an address change in case your financial institution doesnt.

For me, this is a deal killer and a really dumb idea.

Employment-related identity fraud could mean that someone else is working under your identity and using your SSN. If this happens, someone elses wages are being reported in your name to the Internal Revenue Service, the Social Security Administration and other authorities. By using Self Lock, you can block someone from committing this fraud if they start working for an E-Verify employer. Even if you are not currently working, you may want to protect your SSN and identity with Self Lock.

    Reimbursement For Stolen Funds

Depending on the plan, LifeLock offers between $25,000 to $1,000,000 in reimbursement for stolen funds.

When reading the fine print, though, youll see that this coverage is secondary to other coverage that might be offered by the financial institution. Its not quite as good as it sounds.

For example, your brokerage account most likely already has $500,000 coverage for fraudulent transactions through SIPC. And remember, you are not usually liable for fraudulent credit card transactions.

    How To Prevent Identity Theft

Since identity theft protection services don’t prevent identity theft from happening, you’ll need to be proactive to protect your personal information from fraudsters. There are actions you can take to minimize your exposure to identity theft, but remember that some things, like data breaches, are out of your control.

Here are some tips to safeguard your information:

    When To Provide Your Ssn

Not everyone who requests your SSN actually needs it. Generally speaking, if an entity reports information about you to the Internal Revenue Service , you probably have to supply your SSN. This includes your employer, banks/lenders, the U.S. Treasury for savings bonds, and state unemployment insurance and workers compensation offices.

Although other institutions and businesses have the right to ask for your number, they often dont need it, and you arent legally required to provide it.

As of Jan. 1, 2020, Medicare no longer uses Social Security numbers for identification. Instead, Medicare recipients receive a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier a unique series of numbers and letters that they should also try to protect from identity thieves.
