What Is A Social Security Number

A Social Security number is very important to an individual. If you are assigned an SSN, that means you are allowed to work in the United States of America. That’s all.

Some third-party agencies like banks, colleges, credit card companies, and other businesses like to use the SSN as a form of identification, because no one else has your unique SSN. But that is not what the SSN is for. It solely allows a person to be employed.

In some circumstances, an SSN can be assigned to an individual that doesn’t allow them to work, and it clearly states that on the card. The Social Security Administration may do this if the individual needs an SSN to be able to receive federal or state government assistance.

This is a graphic of what a Social Security card looks like. This is not an actual SSN card.

If You’re Replacing The Card Due To A Name Change

If you want to replace your SSN card because you want to change your name due to marriage or divorce, or you went to the courthouse and officially changed your name, you must bring the name change document along with your valid ID whether it is your new or old name. The name change document must either be the original or certified copy . If it’s not either or if it is a photocopy, SSA will not change your name.

Birth Certificate Copies: Americans Born Abroad

If you were born to American parents abroad, they should have registered your birth with the country’s U.S. embassy or consulate. If they did, they would have received a Consular Report of Birth Abroad . You can get a copy of this report from the U.S. Department of State. Depending on the country, a vital records office in the nation may also list the birth.

What if the State Department can not locate your CRBA? If you were born on a military base abroad, your parents might not have registered your birth with the U.S. embassy. In that case, you may have to contact the hospital where you were born.

If You Are Adopting A Child

If the child you are adopting is a United States citizen, your child may have a Social Security number already. But if you are adopting domestically and your child does not have one, you can obtain an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number to claim child-related tax breaks while your child’s adoption is pending. To apply for one, complete IRS Form W-7A, Application for Taxpayer Identification Number for Pending U.S. Adoptions. Covid 19 Pandemic Era

New online service for replacing Social Security Cards in ...

During this difficult time of the pandemic, all Social Security Administration Offices are closed for walk in visits. The only option to request a replacement card is to file online at SSA.gov or by mail. Not all states are able to file online so check SSA.gov to find out if your state of residence is on the list.

If you file by mail, you will have to mail it. Most, if not all, SSA local offices have dropboxes inside their lobby and remember, the offices are close for walk in visits. Therefore, you will not be able to simply go to the SSA office and submit your documents in person. If you cannot file online, submit the required documents and application by mail.

If you are reluctant in mailing in your driver’s license, state I.D., or passport, SSA will accept a printout of your shot records or medical records. SSA understands that people do not want to be without their driver’s license or passport for a month or more so they have been accepting the vaccination or medical records as well. The reason they accept those documents is because it is an official medical record certified by a medical official. For example, SSA will accept the shot records as long as it is signed and dated by the medical official who issued it to you as long as the document has your name and date of birth on it.
