How Can You Change Your Social Security Number

Don't Miss

Are You Eligible For A New Social Security Number

Can I Change My Social Security Number To Rebuild My Credit?

Unfortunately, just because someone has stolen or is using your SSN, doesnât always mean you can get a new one.

The SSA is cautious about changing your number as it can cause complications with your credit report and earnings history, and even make it more difficult to apply for passports, loans, and IDs.

The five situations where you can apply for a new SSN include:

  • Ongoing financial and identity fraud due to identity theft. Unfortunately, just being the victim of any of the types of identity theft isnât enough. You need to be able to prove that youâre dealing with ongoing fraud and have exhausted all other options.
  • Threat of personal harm, such as from harassment, stalking, or domestic violence. If someone is using your SSN to track where you work and live and wants to do you harm, you can change it. Again, youâll need to show proof of your situation like police reports.
  • Religious or cultural objections to the numbers. If a sequence of numbers in your SSN goes against your core beliefs, you may be able to request a change.
  • Someone else already has your SSN. In rare cases, the SSA might accidentally assign the same SSN to multiple people.
  • Issues with sequential numbers assigned to the same family. The SSA will also consider a change if you and another family member share similar names and SSNs and itâs causing issues with your legal status or tax records.
  • Getting A New Social Security Number Is Probably Not A Good Idea

Victims of identity theft sometimes want to change their Social Security number. The Social Security Administration very rarely allows this. In fact, there are drawbacks to changing your number. It could result in losing your credit history, your academic records, and your professional degrees. The absence of any credit history under the new SSN would make it difficult for you to get credit, rent an apartment, or open a bank account.

Getting A Social Security Number For A New Baby

The easiest way to get a Social Security number for your child is at the hospital after they are born when you apply for your childs birth certificate. If you wait to apply for a number at a Social Security office, there may be delays while SSA verifies your childs birth certificate.

Your child will need their own Social Security number so you can:

    • Claim your child as a dependent on your income tax return
    • Open a bank account in their name
    • Get medical coverage for them
    • Apply for government services for them

Keep your Social Security card in a safe place to protect yourself from identity theft.

What’s Allowed In Your Legal Name Change

Your legal name is your first and last name only. The SSA will still print your middle name and suffix on your social security card if enough space is available.

Your name may only contain letters, spaces, hyphens, and apostrophes. Suffixes are okay. Omit your personal title, such as Mr., Ms., Mrs., Dr., Esq., Sister, or Father.

Don’t use a nickname or abbreviation, such as Liz for Elizabeth or Deb for Deborah, unless it’s your actual legal name.

The Social Security Administration will assign a new number if:

    • More than one person is assigned or using the same number.
    • Sequential numbers assigned to members of the same family are causing problems.
    • You are a victim of ongoing identity theft by someone using the original number.
    • You are being harassed or abused or your life is in danger.
    • There is a religious or cultural objection to digits in the original number.

Religious Or Cultural Objections To Certain Numbers Or Digits

Although the SSA expanded the numbers available to be used when the agency randomized the numbering system in 2011, there are still certain numbers that are not issued. When someone is assigned a Social Security number that number may be objectionable to that person based on their culture or religion. The agency makes an exception for these people to have their number changed. But the SSA requires written documentation in support of the objection from a religious group with which the number holder has an established relationship.

Gather All Required Documents For Identification

This is likely the most difficult part of the entire process. Once you complete the SS-5, you will need to gather the required documentation to process your request. As previously mentioned, you will need documents proving both your identity and the changing of your name. One very important item to note is that the documents must be originals or certified copies by the issuing agency. Photocopies or even notarized copies of originals are not acceptable.

Here are some of the most common documents that are accepted by the SSA:

    • Printing SSNs on ID cards or badges
    • Printing SSNs on documents mailed to customers, unless the law requires it or the document is a form or application
    • Printing SSNs on postcards or any other mailer where its visible without opening an envelope
    • Avoiding legal requirements by encoding or embedding SSNs in cards or documents, such as using a bar code, chip, or magnetic strip
    • Requiring people to send SSNs over the Internet, unless the connection is secure or the number is encrypted
    • Requiring people to use an SSN to log onto a web site, unless a password is also used
    • The law applies to businesses, government, and other entities.

I assume that you told TurboTax to e-file your return, and then you discovered on the printed copy or on the PDF that someone’s SS number was incorrect.. If this number were entered on the My Info section, then your return will likely be rejected when e-filing opens in a few days .

If the tax return is rejected, then you have the chance to go back into the return in TurboTax, delete the bad entry, go through the rest of the My Info section so that the change is saved, and then resubmit the return to be e-filed.

It’s important that you check the status of your return every day, so that if the return is rejected , you can fix it and refile it as quickly as possible.
