How Do I Change My Mailing Address With Social Security

Other Options For Updating Your Address

How To Change Your Address with the SSA – IN LESS THAN A MINUTE!!

The option to change your address using my Social Security is available for people receiving retirement, survivor or disability benefits. If you receive Supplemental Security Income, youll need to use one of the other options outlined below. These options for change of address are available for anyone who receives any type of Social Security benefit.

Instead of updating your address through a my Social Security account, you can call the Social Security administration at 1-800-772-1223. This option is available on Monday through Friday from 7AM to 7PM. You also have the option of visiting your local Social Security office in person.

Account Step Four: Secure Your Account

This last step may be a little confusing. My Social Security requires users to use multi-factor authentication. This means that every time you log into your my Social Security account, the Social Security Administration will send you an email or text message with a verification code. The verification code is a multi-digit number that can be used for 10 minutes.

If you always have your phone on hand, I recommend using the text message route. Otherwise, provide the email address that you use most frequently.

Once this step is complete, you can log into your new my Social Security account.

Social Security Office Change Of Address

Are you an old-timer who prefers face-to-face interactions? You can change your Social Security address by visiting the local SSA field office.

*Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, you can only enter SSA offices if you have booked an appointment. An in-person appointment will only be granted in certain situations that include:

  • Individuals aged 12 or older applying for their first SSN card.
  • Individuals who need to update or correct their SSN information to obtain income, resources, or medical care or coverage, or other services or benefits .

In-person appointments might be completely suspended due to the ongoing COVID situation in 2021. For more COVID-19 updates, visit SSA.

Heres how you can update your SSA address in-person:

  • Locate your nearest SSA field office.
  • Hate waiting times? Book an appointment in advance.
  • The SSA representative will require some information to verify details. Once everythings sorted out, ask the representative to update your address.

If you get Social Security benefits or are enrolled in Medicare, you need to let the Social Security Administration know if you move to a new address. The quickest and easiest way to do this is through your “my Social Security” account online. However, you also have the option of calling or visiting your local Social Security office. If you do not receive Social Security benefits, SSI, or Medicare, you don’t need to change your address with the SSA.XResearch source

Forward Mail When Possible

This step may be more comprehensive than simply making a Social Security address change, but it is effective. Submitting a request for mail forwarding can help ensure that any Social Security checks make it to the new location where they can be received and used. You can choose a mail forwarding option that works for you at the USPS website.

This may be more helpful than just changing your family member’s address with the SSA. It will allow you to hold or process mail that arrives while your relative is in treatment or transition. It doesn’t substitute for contacting the SSA long-term, however.

Submitting Your Application By Mail Or In Person

The final step is to submit the SS-5 form and your original or certified documents to your local Social Security office or card center, either by mail or in person. You can find the address online using the Social Security Administration’s Field Office Locator.

If you apply by mail, the office or center will mail your original documents back to you along with your new Social Security card.

One advantage of going in person is that you eliminate the possibility that sensitive or difficult-to-replace personal documents, such as your original birth certificate, driver’s license, or passport, will get lost or stolen in the mail. If you have any questions, you can also call that office beforehand and ask which documents you need to bring with you.

Generally, the Social Security Administration says, it will take two to four weeks to process your application and send you your card.

How You Receive Benefits

If you currently have a representative payee for your SSI benefits, that person will also manage your SSP benefits. If you want to change your representative payee, you must contact SSA. If you receive SSP but do not receive SSI benefits, you can assign or change a payee by calling SSP at 1-855-488-0541.

How To Get Help With International Moves

Get tips and resources about moving to another country.

  • Overseas moving estimates are based in part on how much space your household goods occupy in a shipping container.

  • International moving may involve customs and import regulations. Learn more by contacting the embassy or consulate of the country you are relocating to.

  • Before selecting a mover, make sure the company is licensed and registered. All legitimate international movers will have a license number. To find a movers license number, find the movers name in the Ocean Freight Forwarders database and click on the entry to see the license number.

How Some Moving Companies May Try To Cheat You

Fraudulent movers may:

  • Demand cash upfront before the move

  • Avoid giving you a written estimate

  • Ask you to sign a blank contract in advance

  • Only have one cell phone number as a contact and no local physical address

  • Show up to your house with a rental truck with no company logo on it

  • Give you a quote over the phone without any onsite inspection of your goods

  • Give you a low price and change the estimate substantially at your destination

  • Hold your belongings hostage until you pay more money

Approach #2 Call The Social Security Administration

If killing time in a waiting room is not your idea of efficiency, you may want to consider making a simple phone call. In my past experience, Ive found that the Social Security Administration will change your address over the phone. This is easier than visiting your local office and waiting.

If you choose this route, heres a tip. Call your local office instead of the main Social Security line. In many cases this will cut the wait times in half.

You can find their number by visiting this link: Social Security Office Locator

Account Step Three: Create Username And Password

How do I change my email address?

Once you verify your identity, youll create a username and password. Its important to note that the passwords need to be at least 8 characters, have an uppercase and lowercase letter, a number, a symbol and must begin with a letter or number.

I recommend writing down the password or storing it in a password manager. Youll need the password again if you have to update your address or direct deposit account in the future.

Create your user name and password using my Social Securitys requirements.

At this step in the process, youll also be asked to create three security questions. If you forget your password, you can use these questions to reset your password.

Assisting A Loved One With The Online Account

The Social Security Administration encourages beneficiaries to receive help applying for benefits. Its not highly challenging to apply for benefits but it can be intricate, so asking for help is a good thing.

If you have a loved one who receives benefits but who may be changing addresses soon, you can work with him or her to get a My Social Security account. The process will be the same as mentioned above.

All forms should ideally be signed by the actual account holder. You could help your loved one operate the computer, check for typos, or identify the correct place to click.

Assisting your loved one to get an account online might not be possible. If, however, you anticipate a possible hospital stay in the coming year or two, starting a My Social Security account may be a worthwhile activity for you and your loved one.

Getting A Social Security Number For A New Baby

The easiest way to get a Social Security number for your child is at the hospital after they are born when you apply for your childs birth certificate. If you wait to apply for a number at a Social Security office, there may be delays while SSA verifies your childs birth certificate.

Your child will need their own Social Security number so you can:

  • Claim your child as a dependent on your income tax return
  • Open a bank account in their name
  • Get medical coverage for them
  • Apply for government services for them

Keep your Social Security card in a safe place to protect yourself from identity theft.

Schedule The Update And Submit

You may be planning ahead for a future move, rather than one that has already taken place. Therefore, the next step in the process is to schedule this update to take effect on a particular day. You may be able to schedule it promptly if youve already moved.
