Getting A Social Security Number For A New Baby

Social Security Disability Application- What do I need?

The easiest way to get a Social Security number for your child is at the hospital after they are born when you apply for your childs birth certificate. If you wait to apply for a number at a Social Security office, there may be delays while SSA verifies your childs birth certificate.

Your child will need their own Social Security number so you can:

  • Claim your child as a dependent on your income tax return
  • Open a bank account in their name
  • Get medical coverage for them
  • Apply for government services for them

Keep your Social Security card in a safe place to protect yourself from identity theft.

How Do Benefits Work And How Can I Qualify

While you work, you pay Social Security taxes. This tax money goes into a trust fund that pays benefits to:

  • Those who are currently retired

  • To people with disabilities

  • To the surviving spouses and children of workers who have died

Each year you work, youll get credits to help you become eligible for benefits when its time for you to retire. Find all the benefits Social Security Administration offers.

Are My Social Security Disability Benefits Permanent

Contrary to popular belief, Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income benefits are not considered permanent disability benefits. In fact, the Social Security Administration is supposed to review most cases every three to five years to determine whether an individual remains disabled. However, it is not uncommon for an Administrative Law Judge to recommend that a younger individual, which is defined as a person under the age of 50, be reviewed at the end of the first calendar year to see if there is medical improvement.

Historically, SSA had neglected these continuing disability reviews, but they are becoming more and more common. SSA has the burden of proving that there has been medical improvement when it comes to a disability review. However, it is not uncommon for SSA to deem that a medical improvement has occurred and stop benefits. You do have a right to appeal and you must read SSAs notification letters carefully and follow the instructions. Here are some tips to keep in mind in hopes of ensuring a smooth disability review.

Dont worry. If the medical evidence and objective findings consistently supports that you remain disabled, you will likely retain your benefits. Just remember to make sure that you follow SSAs directions and if you have any questions about the review process, call your local SSA office for details.

Social Security Disability Application Mistakes

Avoid these Social Security Disability application and interview mistakes:

Mistake 1: Dont make the mistake of applying for unemployment insurance benefits after completing the SSDI application. Filing for SSDI means youve been physically or mentally unable to perform what Social Security considers substantial work activity for at least twelve months. Youre telling SSA that youre likely to be unable to do substantial work activity for the next year or longer because youre either physically and/or mentally impaired.

When you submit an unemployment insurance application, you certify to the state that youre ready and able to work. Youre telling the Department of Unemployment that you believe its possible to find work that you can perform. Your state rules may require you to state that you are able to work full-time in the near future.

Sometimes, applicants make the mistake of concurrently collecting unemployment insurance and SSDI payments. Most experienced Social Security attorneys advise against this practice. If SSA learns youre collecting unemployment, your SSDI claim is likely to be denied.

Although SSA doesnt officially prevent a claimant from receiving unemployment insurance benefits after he or she has applied for SSDI, the disability claims division or Administrative Law Judge wants to know if the claimant is disabled.
