What Documents Do I Need To Open A Bank Account
Before you present documents, its a routine requirement for banks that applicants are at least 18 years old. However, minors can be co-owners on a parents or legal guardians account in some situations.
Most banks will require these documents:
- A , such as a drivers license or passport. Some states issue drivers licenses to undocumented immigrants. If you dont drive and would like a photo ID, the Department of Motor Vehicles issues Non-Driver Photo Identification cards. Check with your state to obtain their specific requirements.

Heres Why Everyone Should Create An Online Account For Social Security Benefits: Money Matters
Q: I follow your column consistently. Youve written about people who are unable to open an online account with the Social Security Administration if their credit files are frozen. And youve encouraged people to create their own Social Security account online to protect themselves.
My question: Ive frozen my credit files. Why would I need to create an online Social Security account to protect myself? If I cant open an account with frozen credit, how could anybody else open one in my name?
A: You are correct that an account cant be created online if your credit files are frozen, unless you temporarily thaw them to allow SSA to access information to use as personal questions that must be answered correctly.
But someone can sign up for an online account in person. All someone needs is a persons Social Security number and a few other pieces of information. Remember that a whole trove of information including Social Security numbers was compromised in 2017 for about 150 million people — half of the adult population — when bad guys hacked into Equifaxs data base.
You can always create a My Social Security account by visiting a Social Security office, said Brandon Smith, spokesman for the Social Security Administration in Cleveland. In this case, there is no need to remove the credit freeze.
Ill acknowledge this isnt the easiest kind of identity theft. But it can and does happen.
Alternate Us Mailing Address
Various SSA personnel, including those from the Federal Benefits Unit , say the U.S. address is not part of the verification process but is the place to which SSA sends the confirmation of the information that one has inputted online and an activation code to finish setting up the account. They say that one can use the U.S. address of a family member, or other person you trust, who can then relay the activation code to you received from SSA in the mail.
You should set up your alternate mailing address with a relative or friend in advance, so that you can enter this information when you first make your online application.
Scam Of The Week: New Social Security Account Fraud
Bad guys are abusing the SocialSecurity Administration’s online service called My SocialSecurity Account in two ways:
Basically, this “My SocialSecurity Account” is very useful. It allows you to set up a personal online account that enables you to view your earnings history, estimates of benefits, change your address or start or change direct deposits of your check into a bank account. The SSA also supports 2-factor authentication, which is good.
However, it’s a heaven for scammers. Yes, to open an account the SSA requires verification of personal data by asking questions that only the SocialSecurity recipient should know but this info is easily available to an identity thief, who can open an account in the name of the intended victim.
The introduction of 2-factor authentication does not prevent an identity thief from initially setting up a My SocialSecurity Account in the name of their victim, and we all know that you can social engineer the user to send the 2FA code to the hacker.

Who Are The Representative Payees
The SSA must appoint someone to serve as the representative payee for the individual who is incapable of managing their benefits. The government agency prefers a family member or friend take on this role, as they would know the individual best. In the case of a child who is receiving SSI, a parent or guardian is a natural choice. In the event that there are no friends or family members to serve as a representative payee, the SSA will appoint a qualified organization.

Your Social Security Statement Looks Both Forward And Backward
Your Social Security statement contains two important pieces of information:
Your earnings history is particularly important because your Social Security benefit is calculated based on your 35 highest-earning years of work. You want to be sure the government gets it right!
Your statement will also project what you can expect when you do eventually file for benefits. The average monthly Social Security check is $1,514, according to the latest numbers from the SSA.

Consider Setting Up Social Security Online Before Retirement Age
Most people wait until theyre just about to retire to sign up for Social Security online. But you may want to consider doing it much, much earlier, according to Consumer Action Center director Lori Silverman.
The reason I think it is important to sign up for my Social Security when you begin your career is you no longer will receive paper statements unless you request to have them mailed to you, Lori says. Plus, it is a way to monitor your Social Security account and keep track of how much you will receive in retirement.
And theres another big reason to sign up earlier rather than later, according to Lori.
Setting up an online account will prevent criminals from creating an account in your name and then using it to apply for benefits.

Under 60 Here’s Why You Need An Online Social Security Account
I just signed up for a my Social Security Account online. Its easy, and all the information that you used to get on paper statements is there: your earnings record and your estimated benefits.
It really is amazing to see your entire lifes earnings on one-half of a page, says Ed Slott, a CPA and retirement expert in Rockville Centre, N.Y. In his case, that spanned from a $254 entry posted in 1970 to last years income already picked up by Social Security off his 2016 tax return filed just 5 weeks ago.
The Social Security Administration stopped mailing paper statements to workers under 60 as of Jan. 1. So if you dont have a my Social Security account online yet, you should open one now. To date there are 30 million my Social Security accounts . You sign up on the Web at ssa.gov/myaccount. Choose two-factor authentication for security purposes .
Even if retirement is decades away, and even if youre skeptical that youll get the Social Security benefits youve been promised, having an account and checking it annually is important. Whatever benefits you eventually do get will depend on the earnings youve paid Social Security tax on. Those earnings are reported to the government by your employer, through a W-2. But each year, the Social Security Administration is unable to match 3% to 4% of W-2s to an individual. In fact, the government has collected Social Security taxes on $1.2 trillion of wages that no worker has yet gotten credit for.

The Social Security Administration has a Representative Payment Program for individuals on Social Security and Supplemental Security Income that need assistance in managing their finances. Anyone who serves as a representative payee will need to open a checking account that is designated specifically for the individual receiving the benefits. The SSA will then deposit monthly benefits directly into that account on or around the first of the month.
