When completing your application for SSDI benefits or testifying at your hearing, the key is not to underrate the severity of your condition. You should clearly identify all the reasons, both mental and physical, that prevent you from holding a full-time job. If you have “good days and bad days,” as many disability claimants do, describe what happens on a bad day. After all, those are the days that prevent you from working.
If you’re asked how long you can sit, stand or walk, or how much you can lift, state the most you can do without pain. If you can lift 20 pounds but only while in excruciating pain, don’t say you can lift 20 pounds. The reason Social Security asks these questions is to figure out what you can do at a job on a day-to-day basis, not what you can do one time while gritting your teeth.
Social Security disability forms and judges will also ask about your daily activities: whether you can wash the dishes, go shopping, bathe yourself, drive a car, and so on.
Many applicants are denied because they claim they can go about their daily activities without any problems. Think long and hard about whether this is true for you. Do you have to use a motorized cart at the supermarket? Do you have to take breaks while washing dishes? Do you use a handrail to get in and out of the bath? Does your medication cause side effects like frequent headaches or fatigue?

Rather than write brief responses that are broad and vague, make your answers specific and comprehensive. For example, if you worked in customer service, you might state that you answered phone calls, resolved customer complaints or handled merchandise returns.
Being exact and precise in the material you submit is necessary. Errors will only cause frustrating delays and difficulties. Write down basics such as when you started and concluded each job, the length of your typical work day, your titles, the physical activities associated with your previous roles and your salary at each one. If you cant remember it all, try to do some research.
Write an answer to each question on the form. Dont leave anything blank. Explain that certain questions may not apply to you rather than not responding to those questions at all.
Take advantage of the section of the report titled Remarks. This provides a great opportunity to clarify anything you wrote that could be murky. Everything in this document counts toward making a strong case in support of your claim.

General Tips For Completing Disability Forms
1. Write clearly and legibly.
Avoid erasures as much as possible. And if youre not sure about the spelling of the word, look it up first before writing it. This will help the SSA process your application faster.
2. Do not leave any section of the form blank .
You can ask your lawyer or an SSA staff if you dont know the answer to a question. Or if the question isnt applicable, just write none, does not apply, or not applicable.
3. Give consistent answers.
As mentioned, you will need to submit different types of disability forms. And if your answers in those forms contradict each other, how will the SSA believe you? They may even think that youre trying to commit disability fraud.
4. Answer the questions truthfully.
You might be thinking that exaggerating your conditions will help you get your disability benefits much faster. While this may work at first, the SSA will eventually catch on to it. When this happens, you can be charged with Social Security Fraud. So its important to answer the questions as truthfully as possible.
This is not to say, however, that you should downplay your condition. If youre having a hard time climbing even just three flights of stairs or lifting a glass of water, you should indicate such in your answers. It will help the SSA assess your disability more accurately.

When you apply for disability, one of the things Social Security looks into is how your medical impairments affect your day-to-day life. Often, your medical records dont contain any explanation of how your different impairments interfere with your ability to do things such as take care of household chores, or go grocery shopping. Social Securitys Function Report is designed to provide you with an opportunity to paint a picture of what a day in the life is like for someone living with the impairments you have.
Not Being Clear About How Long It Takes You To Do Things

Claimants often start their claims without an attorney.
Yet, this form is one of the most critical forms a claimant will have to complete, and no one is there to check your answers.
The worst part is that most claimants dont usually hire attorneys until later in the process. However, these forms are sent to the claimant in the earlier stages.

For example, if you work at a factory that assembles airbags for cars, your job title at work might be production associate. Unfortunately, that job title doesnt give the SSA much information. Dont writing down your job title from work, write down what you did. For example, instead of writing a title like production associate, you should write airbag assembler. That way the SSA will know what you really did at your job.
Remember That Social Security Only Has To Prove That You Can Do A Job Even With Your Limitations And Your Claim Is Over
Of course, this is a simplification of the rule.
But if they can show you can watch TV all day then they will say that you can do a Monitor job, for example.
What is a monitor job?
This is a person who sits in a room, mostly without any public contact. That persons job is to watch a monitor all day long to see if people are stealing stuff in a store or bank.
The person can sit, walk and stand whenever they want to. And if the person has issues with getting along with people, it is a great job since you rarely talk to anyone during your shift.
So the burden will be on the claimant to prove that they cannot do this job. Yet, on the form, in the claimants own words, he is saying that he can watch TV, er, a monitor, all day long.
Do you see why this answer is not that innocent?
And the TV example is just one of many that appear harmless but that is often used to deny claims.

The Work History form is evidence in your disability case. Disability Determination Services, which is the state office that reviews your case, uses the form to prove you can do your old job. How can they do that?
They do it because most people fill out the form incorrectly. Once you have sent in the form, they use your own answers against you. There are three main errors that most people make when they fill out the form. Try to avoid these errors and it will improve your chances of winning your disability case.
How Social Security Uses Your Employment History
There are four kinds of information from your work history that Social Security uses to decide your disability claim. It’s important to include as much detail as you can about each job you had so that the claims examiner gets a clear picture of the following:
Job description: your job titles, hours and days worked each week, your pay rate, the specific tasks you performed, the skills needed to do the job, and the work environment.
Physical requirements: how much you had to walk, stand, climb, sit, lift, and carry, as well as how much you had to kneel, bend, stoop, and crawl. The SSA will also consider how you used your hands and any equipment and tools you used.
Challenges you faced on the job: extra help you needed to perform your work duties and if you had to reduce your work hours due to your medical condition, or take frequent sick days or rest breaks.

When applying for Social Security Disability Insurance , the first step of the process will be to determine if you are currently eligible for disability benefits due to your illness. There are hundreds of conditions that qualify for disability benefits.
The SSA uses a medical guide, known as the Blue Book, to determine whether or not a condition is severe enough to warrant disability payments.
