What you should know to change your Social Security Card to Married Name

Now that you have an idea of what kind of information will be needed for your application, its time to start getting your documents together. Some of these things might seem like common sense, while others you might not think to gather if you werent aware that they were needed. If you dont have access to all of these documents, now is an excellent time to see what is missing and determine the best way to replace it.

Some of the documents you may be asked for include:

  • Your Social Security card or a record of the number
  • Proof of U.S citizenship or lawful alien status if you were born outside the country
  • An original birth certificate or a certified copy if you were born in the United States
  • A copy of your U.S. military service papers if you served before 1968
  • A copy of your self-employment tax return or W-2 forms for the previous years
    • Bank information for making deposits

Those who have already verified their age, lawful alien status, or citizenship for a Social Security or Medicare claim may not need to provide all of this proof again. After the documents have been processed, they will be returned to you unless you request an alternative.

When Will I Get My Social Security Card After Adjustment Of Status

Based on our experience, most customers receive their SSN after they’ve received the combo card. At least, that’s what we’re seeing right now. They usually receive it one to two weeks after they receive their combo card. The combo card looks like a driver’s license. That’s your authority to work in the United States and also authority to travel outside of the United States.

It’s an automatic process. They’ll automatically send notification over to the SSA, Social Security Administration. If you don’t receive your social security card in a reasonable time, contact your local SSA office. They should be able to direct you to the appropriate authority or office and be able to track that down. If not, they may even be able to just issue a card for you right there.

    Social Security Name Change

Did you recently get married or divorced and need to change the name on your Social Security card? Well, youve come to the right place.

The name change process can be a pain, especially without proper guidance. It all starts with your Social Security name change.

This guide outlines the right way to change or correct your name on your social security card. Lets get started!

      Overview

The first thing you need to do after your legal name change is to update your name with the Social Security Administration .

The SSA is the United States issuing agency for Social Security cards.

Your updated Social Security card is the gateway to your name change process.

Every federal and state entity links your identity to your SSA record, so you need to update it to get a new drivers license and passport, and any other form of photo ID.

Updating your social security card is a fairly straightforward procedure, and the new card can take as few as ten days to arrive in the mail. However, you cannot apply online, so you must visit your local SSA office in person or mail in an application.

If the very thought of going to a government office is making you reconsider your name change, follow this guide to navigate you through the process and reduce the stress.

How To Change Your Drivers License

Now that youve got your Social Security Card sorted, youll be able to move on to your Drivers License. Similar to your SSC, your Drivers License can also be done online, in-person or through the mail and needs a few different supporting documents. If you want to renew your Drivers License in-person then complete either a Driver License or Identification Card Application or Commercial Driver License Application before visiting the DMV, preferably with an appointment. Furthermore, youll also need documentation showing your current name, such as a Social Security Card.

This can also be done with an original or certified copy of an Identity document or a true full name document. It should also be worth noting that you need to register your change of name with the Social Security Administration before making an appointment to have your name changed with the DMV. This is because the DMV will your name, birth date and social security number with the SSA. If this information cant be verified, then you may not receive your new Drivers License. Instead, you should get a Request for Verification of Information letter from DMV.

Getting A New Social Security Card

Obtaining a new Social Security card that reflects your new, married name isn’t difficult. There is no fee for the service, and you can find a blank application for requesting the change on the SSA’s website. You must take the application to a local Social Security office or mail it to the SSA, together with the necessary supporting documents. The supporting documents must all be originals or certified copies from the issuing agency, not photocopies. After processing your application, the SSA returns all original documents to you.

The SSA requires original documents proving your identity, your citizenship, and your name change in order to supply you with a new card. A certified copy of your marriage certificate should be sufficient to prove your name change. Acceptable documents showing proof of identity include your state-issued driver’s license or ID card or your U.S. passport. Your passport also proves your citizenship, as would your birth certificate showing that you had been born in the U.S. or your Certificate of Naturalization if you are a naturalized citizen.

If your marriage certificate doesn’t show your name change because you decided to take your spouse’s name at a later date, updating your Social Security card may require a court order permitting you to change your name legally. An online service provider can help you navigate this process.

What Does A Ssn Allow You To Do

With all this talk about a Social Security Number, why is it all that important?

Well, it allows you a few key benefits in the US. For instance, health insurance is easier to attain with a SSN, although its not explicitly required by all companies.

Most states require a SSN when you apply for a drivers license, although some people may be exempt. Other times, signing up to private classes and colleges is easier if you have an SSN . Finally, some large purchases may require a number as well.

At the very least, you will need to get your SSC to track your earnings before you begin working.

Speaking of which, remember that you must either have a I-765 work permit OR have the green card before you are legally allowed to work in the US. A SS Card alone isnt enough.

Also, some of us may have been in the US before on a different visa and could have worked previously. In this case you dont have to apply for a new card. You must keep the same SSN, however, you still need a work permit or Green card before accepting employment.

A Social Security Number itself doesnt change over the course of your life even if you get a name change or change your marital status. You can get it reissued if you change your name.

The Essential Documents For An Ss Application

The documents the Social Security Administration requires with your application may be slightly different depending on your situation. You will generally need to provide documents in three categories: proof of identity, a document supporting your name change and proof of citizenship .

      Records Pertaining To Spouses

If you plan to apply for spousal benefits from the Social Security Administration, there will be specific documents that need to be submitted. You will need to show that you are married before anything else. This can often be done through the use of your birth certificate, a photo ID, and a marriage license.

Those who have lost their marriage license can ask for a replacement to meet these requirements. Get in touch with the register of deeds in the county where your marriage took place. If you plan to apply for spousal benefits from an ex-spouse, you will need to have access to the appropriate divorce records. If these arent available, replacements can be provided from the county offices where the divorce occurred.

For individuals applying for Social Security survivor benefits, you will need to show a copy of your spouses death certificate. You will also need to provide this persons Social Security number. If you do not have the death certificate in your possession, the vital records office in the county of the death can provide you with one.
