Have You Received One Of Those Social Security Scam Calls Theres A New Way To Report It

For more information on your case, please call our investigation department immediately. We would be glad to share your case information and help you with the situation. Thank you.

Government impostor scams are growing and scaring a lot of people. In one particularly heinous version the caller or recorded message claims your Social Security number has been blocked because it has been linked to a crime. The caller threatens that the police may be on the way. You are told to reactivate this important number, and to avoid arrest you have to pay a fee or buy gift cards and give the caller the codes on the back of the cards.

There have been instances of people quietly collecting their late partner’s Social Security after death, thinking no one will be the wiser. But while the administration is large and unwieldy, it can catch up. There are better ways to go about collecting Social Security death benefits that youre entitled to.

Even if a person in your family wasnt collecting Social Security benefits at the time they died, you may still qualify for some type of SSA benefit. Youll want to consider this if youre a surviving parent, spouse, or child.

The criteria varies from person to person, so dont be afraid to deal with Social Security directly. Theyll be able to help you figure out what youre entitled to and how to collect. In the meantime, you can follow the guide below.

Receive The Last Benefits Check And Stop Future Payments

Even if the funeral home was quick in notifying the SSA about the death, a benefits check might still come in the mail.;;

Once a person has died, theyre no longer eligible for benefits. Also, youll want to note that SSA benefits are backdated, meaning a benefits check received in June covers July benefits. If someone dies before the end of the month, they do not qualify for any part of that months payments.

For example, if they die on April 10 after their benefits check arrived and was already cashed, then the April check was their last payment. If a check still arrives for May, dont cash it. Instead, return it to the Social Security Administration.

But if they died before the benefits check arrived, youll still be able to cash the check sent for that month. If they receive a check in June for Mays benefits, you shouldnt cash that check. You must return the check to the SSA.

If the deceased receives checks that they arent qualified to cash after death, you must return the check to the SSA as soon as possible. If benefit funds were usually received by direct deposit, contact the bank or financial institution. Youll also want to request that any additional funds be blocked or returned.;;

Best Practices For Calling Social Security Customer Service

You can call Social Security 24 hours per day to use its automated phone system. The system provides informational recordings and allows you to perform some business functions, such as requesting forms or checking on the status of a claim.

If you need to speak to a live operator, representatives are available Monday through Friday from 7 am to 7 pm. TTY services are also available during this time. The Social Security Administration advises callers that wait times are shorter after Tuesdays.

Before calling Social Security, make sure you have your Social Security number in front of you, as well as any correspondence between you and the agency. You should also have pen and paper handy so that you can take notes during your call.

What Can I Do If I Am Unhappy With My Call To Social Security

If you get off the phone with Social Security and feel as though your question was not answered properly or that your issue was not resolved, don’t give up. You have options available to you.

First, review the notes you took during your call. Did you fail to provide some information to the agent? Did the agent contradict him or herself or official Social Security policy? Identifying any issues with your conversation can be helpful if you need to call back or escalate your case.

Next, call back. While doing so can be frustrating, there is a chance that the next person you speak to will have more education or experience and may be better able to resolve your issue.

If a second call doesn’t provide you with the outcome you desire, get in touch with your nearest field office and make an appointment to meet in person with a Social Security Administration employee.

How Do People Feel About Their Calls To Social Security Customer Support

Over the past decade, The Social Security Administration closed many of its field offices, which resulted in an increased number of calls to Social Security customer support. This, in turn, led to long wait times to speak to customer service representatives.

Media reports indicate that many Social Security call centers were plagued by low employee morale and high turnover. It should be noted, however, that Social Security Administration leadership has publicly committed to improved customer service.

You can find out if you can receive benefits overseas by using the Social Security Administrations payment verification tool. Once you access the tool, pick the country you’re visiting or living in from the drop-down menu options.

Social Security Scam Robocall

The general rule is thisif you are asked to give your social security number over a robocall, its not a legitimate call.

The most frequent types of social security-related scams involve an automated message informing you that your social security number has been compromised and linked to criminal activity, or that your social security benefits will expire.

Alternatively, the callers can claim youre entitled to a rise in your social security benefits, but would first need to confirm your name, date of birth, and social security number. Once they are equipped with this information, the scammers can hijack your Social Security account and drain your money out of it.

Social Security Call Scam Increasing In Region

LEXINGTON, Ky. First it was Lawrenceburg Police and some surrounding communities issuing warnings last week after receiving complaints.

Now the Better Business Bureau says a scam using Social Security as a hook is spreading across the region and state.

In an advisory sent Wednesday, the Better Business Bureau said it is hearing from senior citizens about scammers calling them pretending to be with the Social Security Administration.

Seniors reporting these calls say theyre told their numbers have been used in criminal activity and must call a number to keep their benefits from being suspended.

This is an old scam, but is hitting central and eastern Kentucky hard right now, said Heather Clary, communications director for the BBB serving Central & Eastern Kentucky.; Our staff has taken nearly 10 calls just this morning. These scammers try to frighten senior citizens who depend upon those payments into giving out their Social Security numbers and other personal information that can be used for identity theft.

Most of the callers to the BBB have been in their 80s and 90s. All hung up before giving any information to the con artists.

We want to alert the public that these calls have picked up again so you can warn loved ones, neighbors or friends to be on the lookout. The;Social Security Administration does NOT call you with threats;like this, Clary said.
