Contacting Social Security Online

Unlike some other government websites , the Social Security website is easy to use for those who speak English and Spanish, and it offers nearly all of the services you need. The website does also offer some information in other languages online, including Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, Greek, Italian, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Vietnamese.

You can view a list of the online services by visiting the online services section of the website. Youll notice that you can apply for benefits, get a copy of your statement, appeal a decision by Social Security officials, and get estimates of your future benefits and Medicare services, among other things.

Just like the SSAs offices, the website has certain hours of operation during which you can conduct business. But take heart: If not 24/7, the hours are pretty extensive unless youre trying to apply for benefits between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Monday through Friday, before 5:00 a.m. or after 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, or before 8:00 a.m. or after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, the operational hours probably wont affect you.

Most experts say to avoid visiting a Social Security officeanother reason why it’s a good idea to start with the online services section of the SSA’s website.

My Social Security Card Was Lost/stolen What Should I Do

If your Social Security card has been lost or stolen, you need to act immediately! You will need to request a replacement card, but you should also take the proper steps to prevent identity theft. Thieves could use your information to apply for loans, obtain credit cards, or file fraudulent tax returns in your name. You should place a fraud alert on your Social Security number and keep a watch on your credit report. Also be aware of scams that attempt to steal your SSN.

Receiving Social Security Death And Survivor Benefits

The Social Security administration pays a lump-sum benefit to the family of the deceased person. Payment goes to the surviving spouse living in the person’s household . Should no qualifying spouse exist, payment can go to a child who qualifies for benefits on the person’s record. Call the local Social Security office to learn who qualifies.

The surviving spouse qualifies for the survivor benefit if married to the deceased for nine months or more, or if caring for a child of the deceased. The benefit comes with an age requirement. A survivor may collect as early as age 60 but should wait until full survivor retirement age to collect 100 percent of the allowed payments. Disabled survivors may collect from age 50.

Ex-spouses, formerly married to the deceased 10 or more years , qualify for the survivor benefit. Check the Widows, Widowers & Other Survivors page of the Social Security website to learn more details.

Notification to the Social Security Administration becomes an important task when a loved one passes away. Your local field office requires notification to avert any identity theft issues and to process only legitimate payments. Moreover, you need to know who qualifies for Social Security benefits for eligible survivors of the person who has died.

Protect your loved ones.

How To Notify Social Security Of The Death Of A Beneficiary

After someone retires or becomes unable to work, they can typically receive monthly Social Security payments. The amount of the monthly payment depends on how long they worked and how much they earned during those working years. The payments come to the address of the beneficiary until the Social Security Administration learns of the person’s death.

    What Is Social Security

51 [pdf] SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER LOCKED PHONE CALL ...

In 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. This new federal legislature started the collecting of taxes in 1937. Since then, working citizens across the United States began paying into social security in order to have a form of guaranteed income once they reached retirement age.

The Social Security Act was initially meant to be a form of basic retirement for working individuals. However, in 1939, an amendment was made to the act that allowed spouses and/or children to begin receiving social security survivor benefits if a parent or spouse was deceased and qualified for social security income.

How To Contact The Social Security Administration

There are a number of reasons why you need to know how to contact the Social Security Administration. For example, you may have questions about applying for benefits, or you may have questions about your current benefits. Perhaps you may have problems receiving your current benefits. Fortunately, its not difficult to have your questions or concerns addressed since there are multiple ways that you can contact the Social Security Administration.

    Contacting Social Security In Person

When Social Security offices are fully reopened, if you cant resolve your problem or find the information you need on the website or over the phone, you can go to one of the field offices . In some casesif you need to request a Social Security card or update certain kinds of personal informationyou may have to visit an office.

But be forewarned: It probably wont be fun. You can schedule an appointment, though it could take weeks or more than a month to get one. Just heading to the office is an option, but youll probably wait more than a couple of hours to be seen. Some offices report lines out the door.

Staffing is an issue. Due to budget cuts to the SSA, there are fewer workers for an increasing number of applicants. And dont expect them to take an in-depth look at your situation. SSA employees don’t have the training or expertise to help you maximize your benefits the way a financial planner can. If you don’t have a financial planner or other professional who can help you make the right claiming choices, there are Social Security calculators that can help. The SSA also offers a number of online tools.

Some Social Security experts advise visiting multiple field offices in order to ensure that youre getting the most out of your benefits. One worker may misinterpret the rules and deny you benefits or other privileges for which youre eligible, so seeking multiple benefit estimates can help you find the best dealkind of like shopping for a new car.

Another way to schedule an appointment with Social Security is to contact your local SSA branch. If you don’t know the address and phone number of your local branch, you can use the organization’s Field Office Locator tool on their website. Simply click the blue “Locate an Office by Zip Code” button and enter your zip code into the provided field.

Once you do this, you’ll be provided with the address, phone number and fax number of the closest SSA office. There will also be a gray button on the bottom that you can click for a map and directions. There’s even a blue link you can click to get information about closings and emergencies.

    ‘it’s Taken Too Long’

Field offices are slated to reopen to the public in early April.

In the meantime, the Social Security Administration is emphasizing that people who need help start with the agency’s website.

“As we expand in-person availability, we strongly encourage the public to continue to go online at ssa.gov, call us for help if they cannot complete their business online, and schedule appointments in advance,” a spokesperson said.

But for people like Erica Ellis, 43, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, who has been trying to help her sister claim disability benefits, there are no immediate answers.

Her sister, Dorothy Pritchette, 48, a schoolteacher from Newport News, Virginia, has been unable to work since she had a stroke in August. She applied for disability benefits shortly thereafter. While the Social Security Administration website shows that the benefits have been approved, her sister has yet to receive a payment.

“Here we are going into March, and she still doesn’t have her money,” Ellis said. “It’s taken too long.”

The experience, along with Ellis’ own stalled pursuit for her own disability benefits, has made her question the sincerity of the program.

“I really think that they want you to be dead,” Ellis said. “That way, they don’t have to give it at all.”

    Old Age Survivors And Disability

    Social Security office opens today

SSA administers the retirement, survivors, and disabled social insurance programs, which can provide monthly benefits to aged or disabled workers, their spouses and children, and to the survivors of insured workers. In 2010, more than 54 million Americans received approximately $712 billion in Social Security benefits. The programs are primarily financed by taxes which employers, employees, and the self-insured pay annually. These revenues are placed into a special trust fund. These programs are collectively known as Retirement, Survivors, Disability Insurance .

SSA administers its disability program partly through its Office of Disability Adjudication and Review , which has regional offices and hearing offices across the United States. ODAR publishes a manual, called HALLEX, which contains instructions for its employees regarding how to implement its guiding principles and procedures.

The RSDI program is the primary benefits program administered by the U.S. federal government, and for some beneficiaries is the vital source of income. Increasing access to this benefit program for low-income or homeless individuals is one of SSA’s goals. SSA is a member of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness and works with other municipal, county, state, local and federal partners to increase access and approval for SSI/SSDI benefits who are eligible.
