How To Change Address On Social Security Account

Whoneeds Ssa Address Change

How To: Change Your Address

SSA manages several types of benefits. Until you become eligible for one of these benefits, you shouldn’t need to update your address with the SSA. The primary recipients that should consider an SSA address change are people who receive SSA benefits for survivors, disability, supplemental security income and retirement payments. However, if your address is incorrect, you might miss important updates from SSA about your account if they go to an invalid address.

Completing an address change won’t affect your payments if you are one of the millions of people who receive their benefits by direct deposit to a bank account or another electronic option, such as a debit card. If you change banks or your benefit payment method, you need to contact the SSA to update this information separately.

Navigate To My Profile

The my Social Security Account is your online hub for Social Security information. You can use this account to accomplish many social security related tasks, including updating your address.

Over to the right hand side, youll see Overview followed by multiple options including Estimated Benefits, Earning Records, and Replacement Documents. If youre currently eligible to receive social security benefits, youll have the option to select My Profile.

The image below has been edited to show where you can expect to see this option.

Select My Profile, and youll move to the profile screen.

What Is A Social Security Card

Your Social Security card is an important piece of identification. You’ll need one to get a job, collect Social Security, or receive other government benefits.

When you apply for a Social Security number , the Social Security Administration will assign you a nine-digit number. This is the same number that is printed on the Social Security card that SSA will issue you. If you change your name, you will need to get a corrected card.

What Happens If I Dont Change My Address With Social Security

Hereâs why you might want to keep the Social Security Administration notified of any address changes. For one thing, if the SSA canât contact you, they will stop paying your benefits.

According to the SSA website: âFailure to report a change may result in an overpayment. If youâre overpaid, weâll recover any payments not due to you. If you fail to report changes in a timely way or you intentionally make a false statement, we may stop your benefits. For the first violation, your benefits will stop for 6 months for the second violation, 12 months and for the third, 24 months.â

How To Open a My Social Security Account

The Social Security Administration issues Social Security numbers for American citizens, permanent residents and certain categories of alien workers. For the majority of Americans, their parent’s address became their default address at birth. For anyone else who applies for a SSN, the address on their application becomes the address of record. You keep your SSN forever regardless of how often you move or change jobs.

Normally, you won’t need to inform the SSA of any address change until you start to receive Social Security benefits or become eligible to enroll in Medicare. When the need arises, make your Social Security address change online or in person, depending on your preferences and current location.

Why You Should Change Your Address With Social Security And Medicare Immediately

It is important that recipients of Social Security and Medicare benefits update the SSA about a change in address.

This requirement is so important that the SSA has included it in their publication What You Need to Know When You Get Retirement or Survivors Benefits.

    Heres what the publication says:

Even if you receive your benefits by direct deposit, Social Security must have your correct address so we can send letters and other important information to you. Well stop your benefits if we cant contact you.

Social Security needs your address to send you communications about your benefits.

In addition, Medicare also needs your current address to send you important communications.

This includes the Medicare & You handbook each year and a new Medicare card.

Is There A Social Security Address Change By Mail For Ssi Recipients

Should a change of address be notified to the Social Security office ...

Because you do not have the option of updating an address online for SSI, it would make sense to give you the option of using a Social Security change of address form by mail. However, the Social Security Administration does not want you to do that.

SSI recipients should call 1-800-772-1213 during the week between 8 AM to 7 PM. However, remember that taking this approach will most likely require you to spend quite a bit of time on hold until you speak to a representative.

You can also contact your local Social Security office. You can find out the address by entering the ZIP code into the Administration’s “find office” tool. It is possible that the hold times are shorter when connecting with your local office — if they are fully staffed.

Note the phone number, call, and set up an appointment to come in for a change of address. In this case, you spend the time making the appointment and then traveling to the office, where you will most likely have to spend more time waiting.
