How Does Ssa Decide Whether To Change A Beneficiarys Rep Payee
SSA tries to select the person, agency, organization, or institution that will best serve the interests of a beneficiary. SSA has provided its employees with guidance about the order of preference for selection of a rep payee. SSA can choose not to strictly follow its order of preference if SSA decides it is in the beneficiarys overall best interest to choose someone lower on the preference list. However, if a beneficiary wants to change their rep payee to an individual higher on the preference list, that may be enough for SSA to approve the change if the individual is otherwise qualified. The following SSA preference list for adults may provide guidance on the likelihood that SSA will grant a request to change a beneficiarys rep payee:

How Does Ssdi Work
In general, SSDI pays monthly cash benefits to people who are unable to work for 1 year or more because of a disability. After that time, the Social Security Administration will continue giving benefits until it does a review, called a redetermination, to decide if your child needs to keep getting disability benefits.
The SSDI disability benefit comes in a monthly payment, and each person will receive a different amount based on their work credits and total yearly income.
Its important to note that workers compensation and other public disability benefits can impact your childs SSDI benefits, but getting lawsuit settlement payments from a private insurance company will not.

Who Can Get Ssdi
For adult benefits, any worker who has a disability that keeps them from working as they once did may be able to get SSDI. This includes adults with disabilities or special health care needs.
An adult applying for SSDI must have worked for a specific number of quarters and earned a certain minimum amount of money per quarter. You can find these amounts at the Social Security Administrations Benefits Planner page.
Your child must also have a disability or special health care need that prevents them from working, and their condition must meet the Social Security Administration’s definition of an adult disability for SSDI. There are hundreds of medical conditions on the Listing of Impairments, including epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and diabetes.
The Social Security Administration looks at areas of your childs life and situation before approving SSDI benefits for your child. The decision is largely based on whether the following 3 statements are true:
- Your child cannot do the work that they did before due to an injury, a disability, an illness, or other medical condition.
- Your child cannot adjust to other work because of their medical conditions.
- Your childs disability has lasted, or is expected to last, at least 1 year or is life threatening.

Will I Have To Reapply For Ssdi Or Ssi
Both SSDI and SSI are federal disability benefit programs. Typically, that means you wont need to reapply for SSDI or SSI benefits when you move to another state. However, if youre planning a move, you should immediately notify your local Social Security Office of an address change. Typically this can be done online. Sign into your My Social Security account to change your address. Or, call Social Security by phone toll-free at 1-800-772-1213 for further assistance.
If I dont need to reapply, why do I need to update my address? When you move to another state, you want to avoid delays in receiving your Social Security disability benefit checks. Updating your address will help ensure that your disability benefit checks are sent to your new address not to your old one. Additionally, keeping your SSA records up to date makes it easier for the SSA to communicate with you about your SSDI and SSI eligibility and relay any important information.
Understanding Your Responsibility A A Representative Payee Report
The SSA requires that a representative payee file an annual accounting called the Representative Payee Report. This report details what you, as the representative payee, have done with the beneficiarys funds during the previous year.
If you have kept accurate records of the beneficiarys funds over the course of the year, the report will be very easy to fill out. Commingling funds, or not keeping accurate records of expenditures, can lead to an incredible headache when it comes time to file the report. And not filing the report at allcould lead to your removal as representative payee.
So who can become a representative payee? The Administration maintains a list of preferred individuals. This list is in their preferred order of representative selection.

Schedule The Update And Submit
You may be planning ahead for a future move, rather than one that has already taken place. Therefore, the next step in the process is to schedule this update to take effect on a particular day. You may be able to schedule it promptly if youve already moved.
However, your next check may already be on its way to your old address. Mail forwarding should handle that particular problem. Consider contacting USPS to forward mail to your new location.
Once youve scheduled the update, simply verify your changes. After you have made sure that you didnt make any typos, submit your address change.
There are some forms of benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income , which doesnt offer this particular address change opportunity. Need to change an address for SSI? Start by calling the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or visit your local Social Security office.
How To Stop Social Security Check Payments
The SSA can not pay benefits for the month of a recipients death. That means if the person died in July, the check received in August must be returned. Find out how to return a check to the SSA.
If the payment is by direct deposit, notify the financial institution as soon as possible so it can return any payments received after death. For more about the requirement to return benefits for the month of a beneficiarys death, see the top of page 11 of this SSA publication.
Family members may be eligible for Social Security survivors benefits when a person getting benefits dies. Visit the SSA’s Survivors Benefits page to learn more.

What Are Social Security Disability Benefits For Children
SSDI gives monthly cash benefits to those workers or children of workers who have paid enough Social Security taxes to get disability earnings they can use when they are no longer able to work.
Our adult children with disabilities or special health care needs can collect SSDI benefits in 2 ways. The first is when your child gets benefits based on their own employment record if they are approved for these benefits. The second is by collecting childs benefits, which is when an adult child gets benefits through their parents Social Security retirement and disability earnings. While both ways can give your child financial help, there are different rules for each.
In either case, once your child has been receiving SSDI benefits for 24 months, they can get Medicare health insurance too.
