  • Why Change A Social Security Number

The SSA generally discourages people from changing their Social Security number . But like many other rules, there can be exceptions. For example, the SSA may issue a new SSN if you are able to prove that using your existing number will cause you harm, such as in cases of domestic abuse or harassment. The agency also reissues Social Security numbers in certain instances when someone is a victim of identity theft.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that even if you get a brand-new SSN, it doesnt mean you have wiped the slate clean. The SSA normally keeps records under the original SSN, and other government agencies, such as your state department of motor vehicles and the Internal Revenue Service do, as well. That also applies to some businesses, such as credit card companies, that maintain files on you.

The Social Security Administration offers eligible members of the Supplemental Security Income program monthly cash benefits if they have low or no income. It includes disabled adults and children as well as elderly American citizens over the age of 65.

Currently, the SSA sends most SSI payments via direct deposits instead of the traditional paper checks. The latter used to be delivered by mail. But everyone is now encouraged to opt for electronic money transfers to improve convenience.

However, if you are uninterested in bank deposits, SSA offers a debit card option. That said, in the era of online banking, direct deposits provide plenty of conveniences. And you can still use your bank account to cash in checks if the need arises.

The Bank Must Review Each Account Separately

The bank must review each of your bank accounts separately. That means that if you have money in an account that Social Security funds are not directly deposited into, the bank cannot protect these funds even if you transferred some of your direct deposit Social Security funds into that account after they were received. The bank is not required or permitted to trace the direct deposited funds to other accounts.

But the rules can work in your favor as well. The bank must simply protect the balance in the account receiving direct deposits, up to the total of the direct deposits made during the look-back period. It does not matter whether the funds in the account at the time the garnishment order is received are part of the Social Security direct deposits or from a different source entirely.
