How To Change The Name On Your Social Security Card
The process to change the name on your Social Security card is quite straightforward. You must:
- Provide proof of your identity
- Complete and print an Application for a Social Security Card
- Mail or hand-deliver the application and supporting documentation to your local Social Security office
Once the application is processed, the Social Security Administration will issue you a new Social Security card under your new name. Please note that your Social Security number will not change.
Originally created to track the earnings history of employees for use in administering benefits, the SSA-issued Social Security number is used as a universal identifier. The nine-digit number lets government agencies identify and compile information about you.
When you change the name on your Social Security card whether through marriage, divorce, court order, or another reason you need to contact the SSA to receive a corrected card. Failure to do so could stop your wages from being assigned to your earnings record or delay processing of future income tax refunds.
Individuals often ask, how long does it take to change your name on a Social Security card? The answer depends on the backlog at the SSA. Normally, it takes two to six weeks for the SSA to mail your new card, along with returning any supporting documentation. For this reason, don’t wait to initiate the process.

Name Changes For A Minor
Parents often wish to change their children’s names when they make a new start in life. A name change for a child is simple, if both biological parents consent to the change of name. Both of the biological parents must complete and sign the form on the back of their child’s birth certificate. The form is then mailed to the Department of Vital Statistics. The Department of Vital Statistics will send the parents a new birth certificate containing the child’s new name.
A parent must petition the Court of Common Pleas in their county of residence, if the other parent does not consent to the name change. The procedures and forms for filing a name change petition for a child are the same as for an adult. However, the Courts use a different standard in determining whether to grant a name change for a child.
The judicial standard for changing the name of a minor is “the best interest of the child.” A parent or guardian who is seeking to change the name of a child must prove that the change is in the best interest of the child. The following matters are usually considered by the Court in determining whether to grant a petition to change a child’s name:

Sign your marriage license using your new name and, once the license is filed with the county courthouse, you will receive a certified copy of your marriage certificate. This certificate serves as documentation that you have legally changed your name. However, you will still need to notify government agencies, such as the SSO and the DMV, to update your licenses and SSC.

How To Amend Your Birth Certificate
Once a judge has approved your name change, you must then petition the Vital Records office of either the state or the county where the birth occurred to amend the birth certificate. To complete your application, you must provide a certified copy of the court order and a certified copy of the original birth certificate. You will also be required to pay a filing fee to amend the vital record. Once the birth certificate is amended, you will receive a new copy of the birth certificate reflecting the name change.
Some states will issue a document reflecting the legal name change and attach it to the original birth certificate, keeping it on file. Other states will create a new birth certificate altogether, which is especially important when dealing with name changes in closed adoption cases.
However, in most cases, the original birth certificate will be kept in a sealed file by the Vital Records Office, and may only be accessed with a judges consent or with a subpoena.
