Who Qualifies For The Va Dependent Pay

A veteran can receive VA dependent pay based on the number of people who depend financially on the veteran including parents. The VA includes biological parents, stepparents, and adoptive parents in the definition of parents. The VA also recognizes foster parents or other relatives who acted as the veterans parents for at least one year prior to the start of the veterans active duty.

The VA has three categories that define who qualifies as a VA dependent:

  • Spouse: Anyone with whom you have a marital relationship including a same-sex spouse or a common-law spouse.
  • Children: Unmarried children who are under 18, between 18 and 23 and attending school full time, or over 18 and disabled. The VA includes stepchildren and adopted children.
  • Parents: Parents who are dependent on you for care and fall under predefined income and net worth thresholds.

You can download a detailed list of dependent qualifications from VA.gov here.

How To Correct An Error On Your Social Security Statement

Changing Your Direct Deposit Information With Social ...

If you have evidence of your covered earnings in the year or years for which you think Social Security has made an error, call Social Securitys helpline at 800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. This is the line that takes all kinds of Social Security questions, and it is often swamped, so be patient. It is best to call early in the morning or late in the afternoon, late in the week, or late in the month. Have all your documents handy when you speak with a representative.

If you would rather speak with someone in person, call your local Social Security office and make an appointment to see someone there, or drop into the office during regular business hours. If you drop in, be prepared to wait, perhaps as long as an hour or two, before you get to see a representative. Bring with you two copies of your benefits statement and the evidence that supports your claim of higher income. That way, you can leave one copy with the Social Security worker. Write down the name of the person with whom you speak so that you can reach the same person when you follow up.

The process to correct errors is slow. It may take several months to have the changes made in your record. After Social Security confirms that it has corrected your record, request another benefits statement to make sure the correct information made it to your file.

Social Security Online Accounts: Safe From Identity Theft

6 Min Read

CHICAGO – More than 34 million Americans now conduct business with the Social Security Administration online – and with that shift comes an increased risk of identity theft.

For many, a MySSA account now is the only way to obtain an estimate of future benefits, since the agency no longer regularly mails annual benefit statements. MySSA also offers the convenience of handling routine paperwork online, and the ability to update the address on file for your account or start or change direct deposit of benefits.

The SSA receives more than half of all retirement and disability benefit applications via the internet, according to a report last year by the U.S. Government Accountability Office . That is up from negligible numbers a decade ago.

The shift is part of a broader technology modernization drive at the SSA, but it also is an attempt to cope with rising demand for its services during a time of relentless cuts to its administrative budget by Congress.

The SSAs operating budget has been cut 11 percent from 2010 to 2017 in inflation-adjusted terms. At the same time, the demand for the SSA services from the public has been hitting record highs as the baby boom generation ages into retirement.

But in an age of hacking and identity theft, moving Social Security online also increases risk – and it is difficult to imagine a hacking target more attractive than the SSA.

Why Is Social Security Going Up

The major bump in Social Security set for next year is due to a coronavirus-induced spike in inflation.

AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins said in a statement Wednesday that the guaranteed benefits provided by Social Security and the increase are more crucial than ever as millions of Americans continue to face the health and economic impacts of the pandemic.

Social Security is the largest source of retirement income for most Americans and provides nearly all income for one in four seniors, she said.

Why Is It Important To Check Your Social Security Earnings Record

You should check your earnings record at least once per year to make sure your earnings have been properly reported to the SSA.

If your employer didnt report your income properly or reported using the wrong name or Social Security number, you may not have received credit for all you made. If you changed your name after marriage or divorce and didnt report this to the SSA, you may also have an incorrect record.

If theres a problem, you need to contact the SSA to correct it and provide documentation including tax returns, W-2s, or pay stubs. If youve gone years between checking your earnings and you notice a mistake, you may not have these old documents any more and fixing your record could become more difficult.

If you dont get credit for the full amount of wages you earned, your Social Security benefits will be smaller as a result of it. And if money was taken directly out of your paycheck to cover Social Security taxes , youd have paid taxes for benefits you dont receive.

When You Should Expect To Receive Your Check Every Month

When your initial application is approved, it could take a few months for you to receive your first payment, especially if you are also receiving back pay. The SSA sends out monthly payments on a schedule based on your date of birth. Here is their current schedule of payments:

    • Your payment will be on the second Wednesday of the month if you were born on the 1st through the 10th.
    • Your payment will be on the third Wednesday of the month if you were born on the 11th through the 20th.
    • Your payment will be on the fourth Wednesday of the month if you were born on the 21st through the 31st.

There are exceptions to these rules. If you started receiving disability payments before 1997, you should receive your payment on the 3rd of the month. If your payment date falls on a holiday, your payment would be made the day before the holiday.

The Bank’s Duty To Review Your Account

Here’s how it works. When the bank receives a garnishment or attachment order, the bank has two business days to conduct a review. It must identify your accounts and then determine if the garnishment order is to collect child support or federal taxes. If so, the bank may freeze your funds, even if they come from Social Security.

    Exceptions To The Usual Schedule

FREE 8+ Sample Direct Deposit Forms in MS Word

Your payment will arrive on an alternate schedule if you fall into certain categories. It will be made on the third day of the month if:

    • Your state is paying your Medicare premiums.
    • You started receiving benefits prior to May 1, 1997.
    • You reside in another country.
    • Youâre receiving both Social Security benefits and SSI payments.

But thereâs an exception to the Social Security/SSI rule as well. Youâll receive payment on the first of the month rather than the third day if youâre receiving SSI due to disability, blindness, or age.

SSI is needs-based. Itâs not something you paid into over the course of your working career, like Social Security retirement or disability benefits or Medicare, so itâs possible to collect for these reasons without also receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits. SSI is intended to pay for basic food, shelter, and clothing needs.

Your payment will come the weekday just before the usual date if your payment date falls on a weekend or a federal holiday.

You can find calendars on the Social Security Administrationâs website, Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2021, to pin down the exact dates in 2021 depending on your circumstances.
