The name change process can be a pain, especially without proper guidance. It all starts with your Social Security name change.

This guide outlines the right way to change or correct your name on your social security card. Lets get started!

    Overview

The first thing you need to do after your legal name change is to update your name with the Social Security Administration .

The SSA is the United States issuing agency for Social Security cards.

Your updated Social Security card is the gateway to your name change process.

Every federal and state entity links your identity to your SSA record, so you need to update it to get a new drivers license and passport, and any other form of photo ID.

Updating your social security card is a fairly straightforward procedure, and the new card can take as few as ten days to arrive in the mail. However, you cannot apply online, so you must visit your local SSA office in person or mail in an application.

If the very thought of going to a government office is making you reconsider your name change, follow this guide to navigate you through the process and reduce the stress.

How Can a Name Change Affect Your Social Security Benefits?

Form SSA-5 is used for replacement and new social security cards. Once youve printed the form, you are ready to begin filing it out. This form is not long but does require accurate information. It gives detailed instructions, but should you get stuck at any point you can call the Social Security information at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance.

Do not leave any sections blank. It is better to write not available or NA than leave a space blank. Per SSA instructions, use a blue or black ink pen.

If you do not have a computer available, many people ask a friend for help or use a local library.

You can either mail the completed form SS-5, along with your original Social Security card and court order , or take form SS-5 to your local Social Security office. Some people are more comfortable going to the local office in person, and remember you can call ahead to make an appointment. Sitting down with an SSA worker can help answer any questions you have, and you do not need to be concerned about your original documents getting lost in the maileven though that is unlikely.

If you mail your SS-5 and required documents, its okay to send by registered letter for extra peace of mind but this is not necessary. Be sure that if you must submit a court order, you are using a certified copy.

What Is Appropriate Clinical Treatment For Gender Transition

Peoples gender transition needs vary, and treatment options are decided between individuals and health care professionals on a case-by-case basis. The phrase appropriate clinical treatment for gender transition is meant to capture a range of treatments that may be appropriate, in each individual case, to facilitate gender transition. Clinical treatment methods are outlined in the World Professional Association for Transgender Health Standards of Care, and treatment can include psychotherapy, changes in gender expression and role, hormone therapy, or surgery, or any combination thereof. No specific treatment is required, and details of your treatment need not be provided. In fact, NCTE encourages you and your provider to only state in the letter that you have had appropriate clinical treatment for gender transition. Details about surgery, hormone treatment, or other treatments are unnecessary and not helpful.

Will Changing My Gender With Ssa Affect My Health Benefits

Changing your gender marker with Social Security will typically not affect private health insurance. While some insurance plans may automatically refuse coverage of services that appear inconsistent with a gender marker in the plans records, private plans generally do not base their gender data on, or match it with, Social Security records.

However, if a person is enrolled in Medicare, or the Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income programs, their insurance record will be based on Social Security data. In that case, they may experience automatic refusals for coverage of services that appear inconsistent with a gender marker in Social Security records. This type of denial can usually be resolved by having your providers office either add a specific billing code, contact the plan, or help you request a formal coverage determination.
