Social Security Calculation Step : Adjust For Filing Age

How to Find a Social Security Number

The easy way to look at it is to think about it in annual numbers.

Your benefit will be lower if you file at 62 and higher if you file at 70.

If you file after your full retirement age, your benefit will increase by 8% per year. If you file in the 3 year window immediately prior to your full retirement age your benefit will decrease by 6.66% per year of early filing. For anything more than 3 years before your full retirement age, your benefit will decrease by an additional 5%.

A lot of people dont want to retire on their birthday so its important to break this down by a monthly amount.

What Does Your Ssn Reveal About You

How to find out a Social Security number Fast?

Not much. The first three numbers might tell where you were when you applied, or where you had a mailing address when you applied, or where your employer was based when you applied, or nothing about your whereabouts at all. They dont tell anything about where you are now, or where youve been since applying. The second number gives a very rough idea at what point in the last 100 years you might have received your number. But in order to guess that, someone would have to know how many numbers were given out with a specific area number over each of the last 80 years.

How To Protect Your Ssn

Since a lost or stolen SSN number can cause so much damage to your finances, you should always do everything possible to protect it. First, you should keep your Social Security card in a safe place and only carry it with you when absolutely necessary. Do not keep it in your wallet and carry it all the time because that greatly increases the odds that it will be lost. Also, be very mindful of phishing scams so that you do not inadvertently give your information to a thief.

Keep a close eye on your credit report. If you notice anything suspicious or see accounts listed that you did not open, then you should take immediate action. Go ahead and place a fraud alert with the credit bureaus Experian, Equifax, and Transunion. You might even consider placing a freeze on your SSN so that no one has access to your credit file. Depending on the severity of the situation, you might consider seeking legal advice for the proper way to handle the situation.

Why Do I Need To Know How To Calculate My Social Security Benefits

So you may be thinking, Why do I need to know how to calculate my own Social Security benefits? After all, the SSA will give me an estimate at any time.

Thats true! You can go to your My SSA account online and see an up-to-date copy of your benefits estimate. So why would you need to know how to do this calculation on your own?

Its important for a few reasons.

First, it never hurts to understand the mechanics behind an income stream thatll probably be a large part of your overall retirement income.

Secondly, your benefits estimate from the Social Security Administration is probably wrong. This is because their estimation methodology has two serious flaws: 1) They assume your future earnings wont increase2) They use todays social security formula

This means that these estimates are less accurate for younger workers but more reliable for workers who are close to retirement.

So, understanding how to do this calculation is especially important if you plan to retire early or later than normal or if you have a significant earnings change in the last few years of working.

To do this calculation, there are only four steps.

  • Adjust all earnings for inflation
  • Calculate your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings
  • Apply your AIME to the benefit formula to determine primary insurance amount
  • Adjust PIA for filing age

List Of Social Security Area Numbers

What Does Your Social Security Number Mean?

List showing the geographical location of the first three digits of the Social Security numbers assigned in the United States and its territories from 1973 until June 25, 2011. Repeated numbers indicate that they have been transferred to another location or they’re shared by more than one location.

On June 25, 2011, the SSA changed the SSN assignment process to “SSN randomization”. SSN randomization affects the SSN assignment process. Among its changes, it eliminates the geographical significance of the first three digits of the SSN, previously referred to as the Area Number, by no longer allocating the Area Numbers for assignment to individuals in specific states.

    Ssns Used In Advertising

Some SSNs used in advertising have rendered those numbers invalid. One famous instance of this occurred in 1938 when the E. H. Ferree Company in Lockport, New York, decided to promote its product by showing how a Social Security card would fit into its wallets. A sample card, used for display purposes, was placed in each wallet, which was sold by Woolworth and other department stores across the country the wallet manufacturer’s vice president and treasurer Douglas Patterson used the actual SSN of his secretary, Hilda Schrader Whitcher.

Even though the card was printed in red and had “specimen” printed across the front, many people used Whitcher’s SSN as their own. The Social Security Administration’s account of the incident also claims that the fake card was half the size of a real card, despite a miniature card being useless for its purpose and despite Whitcher’s holding two cards of apparently identical size in the accompanying photograph. Over time, the number that appeared has been claimed by a total of over 40,000 people as their own. The SSA initiated an advertising campaign stating that it was incorrect to use the number . However, the number was found to be in use by 12 individuals as late as 1977.

More recently, Todd Davis distributed his SSN in advertisements for his company’s LifeLock identity theft protection service, which allowed his identity to be stolen over a dozen times.
