Why Change A Social Security Number
The SSA generally discourages people from changing their Social Security number . But like many other rules, there can be exceptions. For example, the SSA may issue a new SSN if you are able to prove that using your existing number will cause you harm, such as in cases of domestic abuse or harassment. The agency also reissues Social Security numbers in certain instances when someone is a victim of identity theft.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that even if you get a brand-new SSN, it doesn’t mean you have wiped the slate clean. The SSA normally keeps records under the original SSN, and other government agencies, such as your state department of motor vehicles and the Internal Revenue Service do, as well. That also applies to some businesses, such as credit card companies, that maintain files on you.

How To Tell If Your Child’s Identity Has Been Stolen
Weve heard the nightmares of adults having their identity stolen someone else using their Social Security numbers , ruining credit and lives. Now imagine the horror of discovering that someone has been using your childs SSN.
Wait, how can that be? Children arent allowed to apply for credit, so how can a thief have access to that personal information?
Its all in the way the SSN system is set up, according to Jay Foley, executive director at the Identity Theft Resource Center. The numbers are recorded by date of issue, not date of birth. That means it is impossible to tell if an issued number belongs to an infant or an adult immigrant.
When a creditor gets a request in with a valid SSN, one that they can confirm has been issued, they dont get information telling them to whom the number was issued,” Foley said. “Thats not information Social Security gives out. Nor is it information that the three credit reporting agencies have access to.”
From that point, it is easy for the thief to put down his name, a date of birth, and a reasonable excuse for why he his Social Security number had been issued recently.
It wasnt until recently that companies had to verify that SSNs are legitimate, which meant that your child might have been issued a number that someone else was already using falsely.

Replacing A Lost Social Security Card
Replacing a lost Social Security card is not extremely difficult, although you will need the proper documentation. If you have already registered online for a My Social Security account, then you are in a great position. In most states, you can request a replacement card using the online service through the Social Security Administration website at SSA.gov. You can simply use your account there to request the replacement as long as you are not requesting any other changes like a name change. However, if you do not already have an account, you will likely be unable to go that route since you must know your SSN to create the account.
In that case, you will need to head down to your local Social Security office. Be prepared to bring documents that will prove your identity such as a drivers license, U.S. Passport, or state issued ID card. If you do not have any of these documents, the SSA might accept other documents like a health insurance card, school identification card, or U.S. military ID or identification number. You should note that a birth certificate will not serve as proof of your ID. It proves your date of birth and age when obtaining a card for the first time, but it does not prove identity. You should also note that you will always have to provide original documents. Photocopies or even notarized copies are not valid for proving your identity.

Other Options For Finding An Ssn
If, for some reason, you don’t have access to your father’s personal papers and can’t contact the professional persons he relied on during his lifetime, there are a few other options to try. To find the Social Security number for deceased parents, you can try using the Social Security Death Index.
The Social Security Death Index is a compilation of the Death Master File from the Social Security Administration. It is a database of all the deaths of people with SSNs that were reported to the SSA in the period 1935 through 2014. The reports were often made when family members filed for death benefits. In 2014, the law was changed to require a three-year delay before posting death records.
What kind of information can you get from the Death Index? Each file includes the following information if the SSA had the data:
- Last name
- Last residence
- Lump sum payment
While you cannot access the Social Security Death Index through the SSA, you can access it online for a fee from Ancestry.com and free from Genealogy Bank and from Family Search. Put in your deceased father’s first, middle and last name and dates and locations of birth and death.
Check If Your Child Has A Credit Report
Generally, a child under 18 wont have a credit report unless someone is using his or her information for fraud. A good way to find out if someone is using your childs information to commit fraud is to check if your child has a credit report. To do that, contact the three credit bureaus and ask for a manual search for your child’s Social Security number. You may have to give the credit bureaus a copy of
- your drivers license or other government-issued identification card
- proof of your address, like a utility bill, or a credit card or insurance statement
- your childs birth certificate
- your childs Social Security card
If youre not the childs parent, you may have to give the credit bureaus a copy of documents that prove you are the childs legal guardian.
When Your Child Turns 16
When your child turns 16, you may want to check if theres a credit report in his or her name. This could help you spot identity theft, since children under 18 usually dont have a credit report. If theres inaccurate information in your childs credit report, youll have time to correct it before he or she applies for a job, a college loan, a car loan, or a credit card, or tries to rent a place to live.
Were There To Help If Disability Strikes
As a working parent, your earnings can become a source of Social Security protection for your family. If you retire or become disabled and unable to work, your earnings would be partially replaced by your monthly Social Security benefit payments.
A child who is disabled may depend on your help for a lifetime. When you start receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits, your family members also may be eligible for payments. If you are a parent, caregiver, or representative of a child younger than age 18 who has a disability, your child may be eligible for Supplemental Security Income payments. More information is provided in the booklet.
For children 18 years or older who have been disabled before the age of 22 and continue to be disabled, Social Security benefits may be paid to them if you retire, become disabled, or die. Social Security benefits for disabled children may continue as long as they are unable to work because of their disability.
Additionally, you can find information on the specific benefits and qualifications in the publication.
