More About The Social Security Death Index

In 1935, Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act, which created a system of unemployment insurance, retirement benefits, and welfare programs. Since then, millions of Americans have applied for Social Security numbers to receive assistance. As part of the application process, they provided their name and birth date and kept their address current to receive benefit checks.

Heres how it works. When someone dies, a family member or funeral home typically reports it to the Social Security Administration , either to stop payment for the deceased or to request survivor benefits. The SSA enters this information into the death index. Note that most index records are for deaths after 1962, as the SSA began using a computer database that yearthough a few go back to 1937.

How to Find My Child

The easiest way to apply for a Social Security number for your child is to complete a birth registration form, which has a box you can check to request a number for your child. To complete the form, you will need to provide both parents’ Social Security numbers.

For most new parents, it’s easy to obtain the birth registration form, because hospitals usually distribute them while the mother is still a patient.

But if you didn’t deliver your baby in the hospital or if for some other reason you were never given a birth registration form to complete, you can visit your local Social Security Administration office and request a number in person. This process requires you to do three things:

  • Complete Form SS-5 and provide both parents’ Social Security numbers on the form. To save time, download and complete Form SS-5 from the SSA website before you go.
  • Provide at least two documents proving your baby’s age, identity, and citizenship status. One document should ideally be your child’s birth certificate. The other document can be your child’s hospital birth record or other medical record.
  • Provide proof of your own identity. Your driver’s license and passport are both acceptable.

How Much Do Children Receive In Social Security Benefits

A child may receive a Social Security benefit equal to 50% of the parents full retirement benefit or disability benefit. If the parent is deceased, the child is eligible to receive up to 75% of the parents full retirement benefit.

There is a limit to the total amount that a family can receive from Social Security based on one workers earnings record, though. The maximum family benefit typically ranges from 150% to 180% of the parents full benefit amount. That is the formula for maximum family benefits based on a retired parents work record. If the parent is disabled, a different formula applies.

If the amount due the entire family surpasses the maximum, some individual payments will be proportionately reduced. As an example, consider a retiree named June, who has a dependent child, Ruth, who is also eligible for benefits. Junes full retirement amount is $1,500, and her family maximum is $2,300. June would receive her full $1,500 per month, while her spouse, John, and daughter Ruth would split the remaining $800 payment, each receiving $400.

SSI benefits are determined by a different calculation, and the maximum benefit changes each year. Some states also supplement SSI. In addition, a disabled child who collects SSI may also be eligible for Medicaid to help pay for medical bills.

How To Protect Your Ssn

Since a lost or stolen SSN number can cause so much damage to your finances, you should always do everything possible to protect it. First, you should keep your Social Security card in a safe place and only carry it with you when absolutely necessary. Do not keep it in your wallet and carry it all the time because that greatly increases the odds that it will be lost. Also, be very mindful of phishing scams so that you do not inadvertently give your information to a thief.

Keep a close eye on your credit report. If you notice anything suspicious or see accounts listed that you did not open, then you should take immediate action. Go ahead and place a fraud alert with the credit bureaus Experian, Equifax, and Transunion. You might even consider placing a freeze on your SSN so that no one has access to your credit file. Depending on the severity of the situation, you might consider seeking legal advice for the proper way to handle the situation.
