What If My Social Security Card Was Stolen

HOW TO REPLACE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD?

If you’re replacing your Social Security card because it’s been stolen, there are several precautions you should take immediately to reduce your risk of identity theft. Your Social Security number is a very important piece of personally identifiable information that can be used to open new credit accounts in your name, among other things, if it falls into the wrong hands.

  • Alert the authorities. You should contact local law enforcement to file a crime report. You’ll need this later on when you alert other agencies and take action to restrict access to your credit file.
  • Add a fraud alert. Adding a fraud alert to your credit files lets creditors know you’ve been a victim of fraud or worry you may be a victim in the future. A fraud alert instructs creditors to take extra steps to verify your identity before granting any new credit in your name. Placing a fraud alert with any one of the three major credit bureaus will automatically alert the other two to do the same.
  • Check your credit. It’s important to monitor your credit carefully after your Social Security card is stolen. If an identity thief uses it to take out a credit card or loan in your name, it will appear on your credit file. With Experian, you can check your credit report and scores for free every 30 days and get free credit monitoring.
  • Other Steps To Take After Losing A Social Security Card

Here are other actions you should take when your Social Security card has been lost or stolen.

Step 1. Place a fraud alert You should place a fraud alert on your credit file to protect yourself from identity theft.

You can do this easily by calling one of the three major credit-reporting agencies , says Danielle Kunkle, vice president at Boomer Benefits, in Fort Worth, Texas. Once you request a fraud alert, the credit reporting agency is obligated to contact the other two agencies to notify them as well.

Heres the contact info for each agency.

    • Equifax: 1-888-766-0008
    • TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289

A fraud alert offers several benefits.

Step 4. File a report with the FTC To further protect yourself from identity fraud, file a report with the Federal Trade Commission, Campbell says. The FTC collects complaints about identity theft from those whose identities have been stolen, she says.

You can complete the online complaint form here. Or call the FTC at 1-877-438-4338 with as many details as possible.

Be sure to save the reference number and a printed copy of your FTC Identify Theft Affidavit, Campbell says. You can use this document to file a police report or to counter false credit charges made in your name.

Quickness counts when your Social Security card is lost or stolen. Set matters right by notifying the appropriate agencies, protecting your credit, and keeping I.D. fraudsters at arms length by getting a new Social Security card as soon as possible.

What If I Can’t Apply For A Card Online

If you can’t apply for a Social Security card online, then you will need to show the required documents in person at your local SSA office. The documents needed will depend on your current citizenship status and your age.

Different documents are needed if you are an adult and a U.S.-born citizen, a foreign-born U.S. citizen, or a noncitizen. Also, if you are replacing a Social Security card for a child, you’ll want to check the SSA website to determine which documents you will need.

When Should You Get A New Social Security Number

If your card has simply been lost, then you probably wont need a new number.

You should still follow all of the steps above just to be safe, but chances are that theres not someone out to steal your identity. You may have simply misplaced it or forget to return it to a safe place. On the other hand, if your card has been stolen and youre going through the nightmare that is identity theft, then you will need to register for a new number.

You will have to wait a few years to see if the individual who is stealing your identity gets caught or just gives up. But in the meantime, there is certainly some actionable steps to take.

Updating Information Linked To Your Sin

If you are legally changing your name

By law, you must update your SIN record when you change your name. To update or request any changes to your SIN record, you will need to submit an application and provide required documentation.

If you would like to have your disc number removed from your SIN record

You can do so in person, by mail, or online by submitting an application and providing required documentation.

If you are changing your gender designation

You now have the option to have your gender marked as X or not to declare your gender. Service Canada will add a note to your record indicating your choice. However, until our computer systems are upgraded to register this information, “male” or “female” will still appear on your SIN record.

To update or request any changes to your SIN record, you will need to submit an application and provide required documentation.

    If your temporary SIN expires

If your SIN begins with a “9”, you must update your SIN record to ensure that the expiry date always corresponds with the expiry date on your document from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada authorizing you to work in Canada.

As soon as a decision has been rendered by the IRCC authorizing you to continue to work in Canada, you must apply with your new immigration document to Service Canada for your SIN record to be updated with the new expiry date.

How To Protect Your Identity Going Forward

Now that you have made your initial report and have a new card on the way, what do you need to do to protect yourself going forward? First, you should consider signing up for a credit monitoring service so that you can keep a close eye on your credit. This type of service will alert you immediately if anyone attempts to use your Social Security number to obtain a new line of credit like a loan or credit card.

You might even consider contacting the major credit reporting agencies like Experian, Equifax, and Transunion to place a lock on your Social Security number. This would prevent anyone from using your SSN to obtain credit without going through rigorous identification verification. Finally, make sure to keep a constant watch on your credit file for any suspicious activity. You can obtain a free copy of your report at annualcreditreport.com, and staying vigilant will help protect you from ID theft going forward.

Finally, you should keep your Social Security card safe and secure. There is really no reason to carry your card with you all the time. It is best stored in a safe location and only pulled out when absolutely necessary. This can help prevent both theft and accidental loss of your card.

How Do I Report My Social Security Card Stolen

You should call your local law enforcement to report your card stolen. They can take a police report and begin an investigation into finding the thief. You should also notify the Social Security Administration that your card has been stolen as well as the IRS. Notifying these agencies, in addition to the credit bureaus, will flag your SSN and make it more difficult for the thief to perform fraudulent activity using your SSN.
