Documentation For Citizens Born Abroad

How Do I Get a New Medicare Card if my Card is Damaged, Lost, or Stolen?

For U.S. citizens that were born abroad, you can use your certification of report of birth, your U.S. passport, a certificate of citizenship, or your certificate of naturalization. To prove age, you can use your foreign passport and a document that is issued by the Department of Homeland Security that has your birth date or age listed on it. To prove your identity, you can use the same documents for citizens that were born in the U.S., which include a passport or drivers license.

For children born abroad, the process is similar, but the SSA will also accept documents that show the name of the child, identifying information of age, birth date and parents names, and a recent photo. Proof of identity for the parents is also required.

Replacement Card For A Us Born Child

You can replace your child’s Social Security card for free if it is lost or stolen. You are limited to three replacement cards in a year and 10 during a lifetime. Legal name changes and other exceptions do not count toward these limits. For example, changes in immigration status that require card updates may not count toward these limits. Also, you may not be affected by these limits if you can prove you need the card to prevent a significant hardship.

You must present original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies. All documents must be current . We cannot accept a receipt showing you applied for the document.

Documents Required For A Social Security Card Replacement

To successfully get a new social security card you will need to gather some essential original documents or certified copies of the originals, issued by the respective agency.

The documents you need to gather to obtain a Social Security Card must:

  • Show proof of US citizenship: your U.S. birth certificate or a U.S. passport.
  • Show proof of your age: a US birth certificate, US hospital birth record, US passport or religious record made before the age of 5 showing your date of birth are acceptable.
  • Demonstrate your identity: a U.S. drivers license, U.S. passport or employee state-issued ID card, school ID card, military card or health insurance card are adequate as proof of identity.
  • Please note that all of these documents must be up to date. The SSA does not accept expired documents. It will not accept receipts that show you had applied for these documents in the past, either.

If You Requested An Ssn When You Applied For Your Visa

You can apply for your Social Security Card even before you land in the U.S. at the time of applying for your Green Card. This is usually recommended and is the best way to get an SSN as an outsider. When youre filling out Form DS-230, which is for the immigrant visa and alien registration, you need to agree to questions 33a and 33b.

33a confirms that youre requesting an SSN along with your Green card. The Department of State will coordinate with the Department of Homeland Security to provide you a unique SSN upon your arrival in the United States. 33b explicitly grants permission to both of those organizations to collect and request the relevant information. You should receive your SSN within three weeks of landing in the U.S.

How To Get An Id Without A Birth Certificate Or Social Security Card

Losing your ID and other important documents is one of the most annoying things that can happen. Fortunately, it is possible to replace all of your vital records and documents. Even though it will take some time, you will be able to get a new ID, social security card, and any other document you might have lost.

If your documents were stolen, you might want to first near you. You need to file a report to avoid getting fined for not having certain documentation on you. The sooner you make the report, the less likely that another person can commit identity theft using your documents.

Other Steps To Take After Losing A Social Security Card

Here are other actions you should take when your Social Security card has been lost or stolen.

Step 1. Place a fraud alert;;You should place a fraud alert on your credit file to protect yourself from identity theft.

You can do this easily by calling one of the three major credit-reporting agencies , says Danielle Kunkle, vice president at Boomer Benefits, in Fort Worth, Texas. Once you request a fraud alert, the credit reporting agency is;obligated to contact the other two agencies to notify them as well.

Heres the contact info for each agency.

    • Equifax: 1-888-766-0008

The LifeLock Brand is part of NortonLifeLock Inc. LifeLock identity theft protection is not available in all countries.

How To Report Us Citizenship To Social Security

To report naturalization to Social Security, you must complete form SS-5. Once you complete the form, you can either mail it or visit a local Social Security Administration office in person to submit it.

I highly recommend going in person because the process is much faster.

If you do decide to go in person, be sure to bring the following:

      • Proof of U.S. citizenship
      • Another form of picture ID

You can get Form SS-5 at the SSA office and complete it at their office but it may be easier to just print it out before heading to their office.

Finally, you will be interviewed by the Social Security Administration office staff.

They will want to verify your citizenship and then update your records.

If you update social security after citizenship it will not result in a new social security card being issued to you unless there were restrictions on your old card that I mentioned before.

If you would like a new social security card, make a request for one during your interview with the office staff.

      Case Example:

Amir has recently become a U.S. citizen by completing the oath ceremony after submitting his N-400 application almost a year ago. He then decides to apply for a U.S. passport so he can travel without worrying about re-entry issues.

Six months later, Amir decides to go the the Social Security Administration to notify them that he is now a U.S. citizen. He takes his passport as proof as well as his drivers license and the completed SS-5 form.

How Can I Replace My Birth Certificate After Losing My Id

      License Templates

The birth certificate is an essential document. It is needed to obtain several other documents, including a passport. If you have lost all of your IDs and don’t have a Social Security card replacement, the best thing you can do is to first get a certified copy of your birth certificate.

To replace your birth certificate check whether you can obtain a certified copy without any identification and follow your vital records office instructions. Several states dont require a government-issued photo ID to get a replacement certificate. You can order a birth certificate online. All you need is the pertinent information, such as dates, the reason or need for the certificate, and who you need it for.

Some states allow your mother or father, whose names are on the birth certificate, to submit a notarized letter with a copy of their photo ID in order to obtain a replacement certificate.

If you need a government-issued photo ID, it might be possible for you to get a replacement of your drivers license first. This will depend on your state.

Remember that, beginning October 2020, you will need a federal compliant card in order to board a domestic flight or access some federal facilities.
