How To Apply For A Social Security Card
In order to apply for a social security card, you will need to gather some original documents to prove your U.S. citizenship, age, and identity. The government only accepts certain documents as proof of these. To prove your citizenship, you must present your U.S. birth certificate or a U.S. passport. A birth certificate is also needed for proof of identity, but if one does not exist, you may be able to submit a religious record made before the age of five that shows your date of birth, a U.S. hospital record of your birth, or your U.S. passport.
If you are of the age of 12 or older requesting an original Social Security number, you will have to appear in person at your Social Security office. You can find your local office based on zip code here. You will be asked to provide evidence that shows you do not currently have a Social Security number. Examples of documents you can use to prove this include: records that show long-term residence outside of the United States such as current or previous passports, school records, and employment records or, if you have lived in the United States, any information about schools you have attended or copies of tax records that might show you were never given a Social Security number.
Original Card For A Noncitizen Child
In general, only noncitizens who have permission to work from the Department of Homeland Security can apply for a Social Security number . If your child does not have permission to work but needs an SSN for other purposes, see “If your child does not have permission to work” for further information.
In some cases, we can assign your adopted child a number before the adoption is complete, but you may want to wait. Then, you can apply for the number using your child’s new name. If you want to claim your child for tax purposes while the adoption is still pending, contact the Internal Revenue Service for Form W-7A, Application for Taxpayer Identification Number for Pending U.S. Adoptions. For more information, see Social Security Numbers For Children .
Enumeration Beyond Entry
You may be eligible to apply using our automated process called Enumeration Beyond Entry if you are applying to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services for work authorization or lawful permanent resident status.
If you are unable to use Form I-765 or Form I-485, you will need to contact your local Social Security field office. You should receive your SSN card within two weeks after we have everything we need to process your application, including verification of your immigration document with the USCIS. Why Do Most Card Issuers Require Social Security Numbers
The U.S. social security database is one of the most efficient and secure resources banks can use to verify client identity and personal information. The U.S. Patriot Act of 2001 holds each bank responsible for the individual accounts it opens and provides tools for the tracking of illegal activity such as money laundering or for the identification of potential terrorist threats. For this reason most banks and credit card companies prefer and almost always require a valid social security number.
If an applicant does not qualify for a SSN, another form of ID is required to verify personal information. Alternatives for proof of identification vary depending on the card issuer and the type of card requested. Though a SSN is not required to have a credit file with the credit bureaus, many banks use social security numbers to run credit checks before approving card applications.

The Social Security Administration Gives You Three Ways To Request A New Social Security Card
There are several ways to request a new card: in person, online or through the mail. If you meet the requirements, doing it online may be the easiest way, but if you need to request a new card through the mail, the administration says not to send original primary documents that you should keep in your possession, such as your driver’s license, your passport or your immigration documents.
Also, documents must be originals or copies certified by the agency that issued them. The administration won’t accept photocopies or notarized copies.
If you’re getting a new card in person or sending your documents by mail, make sure to also fill out Form SS-5 .
Here Are Some Of The Most Popular Issuers’ Authorized User Policies:
- Capital One Name, Birthday and Phone Number. An SSN is required to add an Account Manager .
- Discover SSN, Name, Birthday and Address
- Citibank Name, Birthday, and Address
- Chase Name, Birthday and Address
- Barclaycard Name, Birthday, Relationship to Primary Cardmember and Citizenship status
Before adding an authorized user, you should also make sure to weigh the benefits and potential drawbacks of doing so. On the one hand, it will help the authorized user build credit. And if you mess up, the authorized user can have the negative records removed from his or her credit report. On the other hand, you’re the one who’s responsible for paying the bill every month.
You can get business credit cards without a Social Security number, but it’s not easy and will limit your options. Approval for nearly all business credit cards is heavily reliant on the state of a small business owner’s personal finances, which is why your SSN is important for card approval. It’s also important because you are personally liable for all business card balances. If you don’t have a Social Security number and aren’t able to get one, you could apply for a business credit card with an Employer Identification Number instead of an SSN. But there are some steps you must take first.
Still, there are only certain cards you can apply for without an SSN, and issuers usually exclude business cards.

This is largely because applying with an EIN means the issuer isn’t able to run a personal credit check on you. For the best chances of approval without an SSN, you’ll want your business finances to be in excellent shape and very established.
Another business credit card option that doesn’t require an SSN is a corporate card. Corporate cards are business credit cards that are issued to a corporation as opposed to an individual. Corporations generally need at least $10 million in annual revenue to qualify for a corporate card, however. Issuers will review the company’s financial track record and use company assets like CDs and bank accounts as collateral.
