How To Request A Social Security Card Replacement

How do I replace my Social Security card without ID?

If all you need is a replacement Social Security card, with no other changes, you can simply request a new card online at the Social Security website. You’ll need to be a U.S. citizen age 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address and will have to supply information from a drivers license or state-issued identification card from a participating state or the District of Columbia.

Currently, every state but Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and West Virginia participates in this program. If you’re from Alaska, Delaware, and Wisconsin, note that Social Security will only accept a driver’s license.

This service is not yet available to people whose drivers license or identification card was issued by a U.S. territory, such as Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Note that a new Social Security card can also be requested by filling out the application and returning it via mail to dropping it off at the local Social Security Administration office. Or applicants can go to the local Social Security Administration office and fill out an application there.

Replacing Your Driver’s License

Replacing your drivers license procedures vary from state to state and will require a visit to your local Department of Motor Vehicles in order to complete an application in person. Some states will allow you to replace your drivers license without the original card or other identifying documents.

Getting your new drivers license issued will be much easier once you have received a certified copy of your birth certificate. Make sure to provide your drivers license number during your application, should you find an old photograph, scan or photocopy of your drivers license where the number is clearly visible.

Make sure you have your Social Security number at hand, even if you don’t have the actual card. After completing the required forms at the DMV, an employee will take your picture and thumbprint. The DMV clerk will then validate the information provided, charge you a replacement fee and issue a temporary license or ID.

To get a replacement Social Security card in New Jersey, go online to the specific SSA website for the SS-5. You will notice the form says SS-5 and Social Security Administration in the upper left corner of all five pages.

Use only a black or blue ink pen to fill out the SS-5. You will begin with your legal name and fill out the information as requested.

Once youve completed the form, you will need to print it, then either mail it in, or take to your local Social Security office in New Jersey and submit face-to-face. You do not need to access your Social Security account if you are on disability or retired.

What Is A Temporary Social Security Card

As the name implies, a temporary card is one that only lasts a short period of time. Your actual card is permanent meaning that it is supposed to last for your entire lifetime. A temporary card is only good for 30 days. There are a few other differences between a temporary card and your permanent card as well.

Your official Social Security card is issued by the Social Security Administration , and it serves as an official document showing proof of your ID. Your temporary card can only be issued by the SSA as well however, it is not the same as your real card. Your temporary card only serves as evidence that your replacement card has been ordered, and it will only be accepted where copies of your original are accepted.

A temporary card can be especially helpful when enrolling in school or applying for a new job. But you should remember that a temporary card does not count as an original of the document. If an original is required, then you will have no choice but to wait until your replacement card arrives.
