How To Get S Social Security Card

Don't Miss

Submit Your Replacement Card Application To The Social Security Administration

How Do You Replace Your Social Security Card?

After filling in all sections of the SS-5 application and collecting the right ID , the next step is to take or mail the application plus ID to the Social Security Office. The most direct route is to go in for a face-to-face meeting, but this will usually mean waiting in the lobby.

Be sure to make copies of documents beforehand, for safekeeping.

Some Massachusetts residents especially those in no rush chose to mail the application and proof of ID to the SSA office instead. This route means a wait of 10 to 14 days before receiving a replacement Social Security card. Be sure to include your return U.S. mailing address.

Others prefer the face-to-face option because they receive their ID back immediately. Again, this may require a wait of several hours but if you need a replacement card quickly, this is the way to go.

Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, in-person services can be more of a problem in some states. If you arent sure where to submit the form, check the ssa.gov website for instructions.

The Purpose Of Having A Social Security Number

    InvestopediaForbes AdvisorThe Motley Fool, CredibleInsider

A Social Security number is a nine-digit number that the U.S. government issues to all U.S. citizens and eligible U.S. residents who apply for one. The government uses this number to keep track of your lifetime earnings and the number of years worked.

When the time comes to retire, or if you ever need to receive Social Security disability income, the government uses the information about your contributions to Social Security to determine your eligibility and calculate your benefit payments. Most people will use the same Social Security number their entire lives, though some people might need to apply for a replacement number at some point because of identity theft.

Keep reading below to find out more about when and why you need a Social Security number as well as when you should avoid using it.

You can request an SSN while filling out the information for their birth certificate. However, if you did not register your child for an SSN at birth, its not too late.

If you are a minor, you can apply for an SSN independently. You do not have to get a parents signature or permission. However, children 12 and up have to go to the Social Security Administration office in person for an interview. Even if a parent is applying on their behalf.
