If you are an American citizen, irrespective of whether you are applying for a job or any other application which requires your Social Security number, you need to have a Social Security card to prove your citizenship.

How To Get Ssn For An Adopted Child

If the child being adopted is already a citizen of the United States, then there is a chance they already have a Social Security Number and Card. However, if you are adopting a child domestically and if he/she does not have one, you would need to obtain an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number to claim the related benefits while the process of adoption is pending. You would need to complete an IRS Form W-7A for adoptions that are pending in the United States. The ATIN is valid for two years and can be extended if the adoption is not through yet. Once the adoption is through, you can get a Social Security Number for your child by following the above procedure. You would need to complete the form and submit it to your local Social Security Administrative Office.

If you are adopting a child from a different country, then you will have to wait until the adoption is final and the child has entered into the United States to obtain a Social Security Number. You can only make an application once all the formalities have been completed and the child has entered the United States of America.

Other Issues To Consider

  • Due to SSA policy, you may not apply more than 30 days before the employment start date.
  • If you are a new student, you should delay applying for a social security number until at least two weeks into the semester or two weeks after your arrival in the U.S, whichever is later, to avoid denial from the Social Security Administration.

Getting A Replacement Social Security Card Now

About a third of people coming to Social Security offices do so to get replacement Social Security cards. And roughly 20% come for their Social Security benefit statements.

You can also get your Social Security benefit statement on the Social Security website or apply for benefits there, as long as you have a my Social Security account.

If you need a replacement Social Security card, you can apply for one for free online at the Social Security website but only if you live in one of the 40 states that permit this for all citizens age 18 or older. The ones that dont: Alabama, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon and West Virginia. In Delaware and Wisconsin, you can only apply online if you have a drivers license. So, if you can’t apply online, you’ll need to call Social Security for help getting a new card.
