How To Know If My Social Security Number Is Valid

Don't Miss

What The Numbers Mean

What must I do if my employee’s social security number isn’t valid?

The nine-digit Social Security number is divided into three parts. The first three numbers generally indicate the state of residence at the time a person applies for his or her first card. Originally, the lowest numbers were assigned to the New England states, and the numbers grew progressively higher in the South and West. However, in recent years, this geographical relationship has been disrupted somewhat by the need to allocate numbers out of sequence to certain growing and populous states. The middle two digits of a Social Security number have no special significance, but merely serve to break the numbers into blocks of convenient size. The last four characters represent a straight numerical progression of assigned numbers.

SSA has issued about 365 million Social Security numbers, and about 10 million new numbers are assigned each year. But even at this rate, there will be no need to reissue the same numbers, revise the present system, or devise a new numbering system for several generations. For this reason, SSA plans to continue using the nine-digit number.

Replacement Card For A Noncitizen Child

You can replace your childs Social Security card for free if it is lost or stolen. You are limited to three replacement cards in a year and 10 during a lifetime. Legal name changes and other exceptions do not count toward these limits. For example, changes in immigration status that require card updates may not count toward these limits. Also, you may not be affected by these limits if you can prove you need the card to prevent a significant hardship.

In general, only noncitizens who have permission to work from the Department of Homeland Security can apply for a Social Security number. If your child does not have permission to work but needs a Social Security number for other purposes, see If your child does not have permission to work for further information.

You must present original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies. All documents must be current . We cannot accept a receipt showing you applied for the document.

Your Social Security Number Is The Key

Originally, your Social Security number was a way for the government to track your earnings and pay you retirement benefits. But over the years, it has become much more than that. It is the key to a lot of your personal information. With your name and SSN, an identity thief could open new credit and bank accounts, rent an apartment, or even get a job.

When To Avoid Using Your Social Security Number

Federal law basically lets anyone ask for your Social Security number, but that doesnt mean you need to give it out. You should use your Social Security number as infrequently as possible. Just because someone asks for it doesnt mean they truly need it.

For example, though most medical providers will ask for your SSN, you can leave the line asking for it blank when filling out medical paperwork, and often, no one will question it. Your doctors office and other businesses can use other information to identify you and keep track of your records. That said, while you can refuse to provide your SSN, the other party can also refuse to do business with you.

You also shouldnt carry your Social Security card around with you unless you will be using it for a specific purpose that day, such as when youre filling out paperwork to start a new job, and you have to show it to your employer as proof of citizenship .

You dont want to risk losing your card or having it stolen since thieves can use this number, in combination with your other personal data, to apply for credit, take out loans, get a job, or even get health care in your name, creating a potentially massive identity theft problem for you to clean up.

Instead, keep the card in a secure place at home or in a safe deposit box at the bank. If your card is lost or stolen, youll want to apply for a new one.

How Do I Check The Validity Of The Canadian Social Insurance Number In C#

I’ve been given the assignment to write an algorithm in C# that checks the validity of a Canadian Social Insurance Number . Here are the steps to validate a SIN.

Given an example Number: 123 456 782

  • Remove the check digit : 123456782
  • Extract the even digits : 12345678
  • Double them:
        2 4 6 8 | | | | v v v v 4 8 12 16
  • Add the digits together:
    4+8+1+2+1+6 = 22
  • Add the Odd placed digits:
        1+3+5+7 = 16
          Total : 38
  • If the total is a multiple of 10, the check digit should be zero.
  • Otherwise, Subtract the Total from the next highest multiple of 10
  • The check digit for this SIN must be equal to the difference of the number and the totals from earlier
  • I’m lost on how to actually implement this in C#, how do I do this?

    Protecting Yourself Against Fraud

Although SSN variations are not typically the result of identity theft or fraud, it’s always good to be aware of any changes in your credit report. Checking your credit report frequently or signing up for Experian’s free can help you catch signs of fraud earlier so you can act quickly to minimize any damage. Here are some other tips for preventing credit fraud:

    • Don’t keep your Social Security card or number in your wallet or car.
    • If your wallet is lost or stolen, contact your credit card issuers immediately to let them know your cards are missing.
    • Shred any documents containing your personal information.
    • Always use a secure connection when shopping online. Check for “https” in the URL. The “s” means the website is secure.
    • Don’t check your bank account using public Wi-Fi.
    • Create strong, unique passwords for every account. A secure password manager can help you keep track of them.
    • Beware of scammers and take steps to avoid them. For example, if a business calls you and requests personal information, let them know you will hang up and call them back. By initiating the call using their publicly listed phone number or the customer service number on your billing statement, you can be sure you’re talking to the real deal.
    • Be mindful of shoulder surfers. Don’t let anyone look over your shoulder while entering passwords or PINs.

Is My Old United States Social Security Number Still Valid

“Your past interactions with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service certainly wont be held against you in the future.”

The Irish Voice’s Green Card column provides advice on whether your old US social security card and the number are still usable years later.

I came to the U.S. seven years ago. I married an American citizen but it was a huge mistake. To make a very long story short I didnt even get a green card, though I had started the process for doing so. I did get a Social Security number and a document allowing me to work.; I returned home to Ireland for two years, but now Im back in the U.S.; I am divorced and looking to rebuild my life.

“Is the Social Security number that I obtained still valid? There is no expiration date on it. It would greatly help me if I could use it as I could probably obtain a license.; And I ever have a chance to become legal again, would my past case be held against me? I never contacted immigration about it, and never followed through with my paperwork.

The Social Security Administration issues three different kinds of Social Security numbers ones for American citizens and legal permanent residents that have no restrictions at all; ones for those with temporary legal status ; and lastly, those that are not valid for employment in the U.S.

SSA issues three types of Social Security cards. One, the familiar card most people have, has been issued since 1935. It shows the person’s name and Social Security number, and it lets the person work without restriction. SSA issues it to U. S. citizens and permanent resident aliens.

The second type of card bears the legend NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT. SSA issues it to people from other countries who are admitted to the United States on a temporary basis but not for work, and who need a number for other purposes, such as banking. SSA began issuing the third type of card in 1992. It bears the legend VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH INS AUTHORIZATION. It is issued to people who are admitted to the United States on a temporary basis with Immigration and Naturalization Service employment authorization.

The Social Security number consists of nine digits, usually written in the format 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. The first three digits of a social security number denote the area where the application for an original Social Security number was filed.
