Most Social Security Services Are Now Available Online But There Are A Few Things That Still Require An In
There is probably a Social Security office within a short drive of where you live, but there aren’t many things you’ll need to go to the office for. Most of the Social Security Administration’s services are offered online, including the application for retirement benefits. However, there are a few things you may need to do that will require a trip to your local Social Security office.

How Do Benefits Work And How Can I Qualify
While you work, you pay Social Security taxes. This tax money goes into a trust fund that pays benefits to:
Those who are currently retired
To people with disabilities
To the surviving spouses and children of workers who have died
Each year you work, youll get credits to help you become eligible for benefits when its time for you to retire. Find all the benefits Social Security Administration offers.

How To Get Access To A My Social Security Account
Setting up an online secure account is quick and easy, which you can do online or in person, once offices reopen if you are unable to get an in-person appointment now. For those who are 18 and older, all you need is a US mailing address, valid email address and a Social Security number.
If you dont already have the app on your smartphone, you will want to download the app to your phone before you get started.
Online Vs Local Office
The Social Security Administration has a list of things you can accomplish online including applying for benefits, estimating your retirement benefits, applying for a Social Security card or replacement card, appealing a decision, and even estimating what your benefits will be in the future through a retirement calculator that lets you compare different retirement dates and future earning estimates.
In some cases, its still necessary to go into the Social Security field office. For example, some online applications are only available in English, so if someone needs to apply in another language, they may need to use the phone or visit the office. Also some tasks, like reporting a death in order to receive Survivor Benefits, must be done over the phone or in person, though often the funeral home will report the death to Social Security. Also, not all states offer online applications. And some states that do offer online applications restrict them to people who possess certain documents, such as a drivers license.
Though it may turn out that your particular issue requires you to call in or pay a visit to the office, its a good idea to start with Social Securitys website, which can provide a lot of answers to questions and frequently let you take care of your business much faster, and more conveniently before trying other avenues.

Social Security Services You Can’t Get Online
To be perfectly clear, you can still do all of the things on the list above in person if you choose to do so. Even though most commonly accessed Social Security services are offered online doesn’t mean that handling them that way the best option for you. Many people simply prefer to handle these things in person or over the phone — and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. For example, my 87-year-old grandmother isn’t going to log on to ssa.gov if she loses her Medicare card, no matter how much more convenient it may be.
And then there are the things you can’t yet do online. I mentioned that some people can apply for a replacement Social Security card online, but in fact, that option is not available for much of the population. Specifically, in order to get a replacement card online, you need to be over 18, not requesting a name change, and live in one of eight states or Washington, D.C. Everyone else still needs to fill out an application and present their original birth certificate or other identifying documents. You can do this in person at the Social Security office, or by mail, but I never recommend sending original identifying documents in the mail.
Survivor benefits are another thing you can only apply for in person, as the documentation requirements vary depending on your relationship to the deceased, and some of the lists of questions survivors have to answer can be lengthy.

Applying For Social Security
- Generally, you should apply for Social Security retirement benefits three months before you want your benefits to begin. Even if you dont plan to receive benefits right away, you should still sign up for Medicare three months before you reach age 65.
- If you were born before 1938 and you meet all other requirements, you can receive benefits beginning with the first full month you are age 62. However, if you choose to begin receiving benefits before age 65, your benefits will be reduced to account for the longer period over which you will be paid.
- The full retirement age is 65 for persons born before 1938. The age gradually rises until it reaches 67 for persons born in 1960 or later. Social Security benefits are payable at full retirement age for anyone with enough Social Security credits. As you work and pay taxes, you earn credits that count towards eligibility for future Social Security benefits. You can earn a maximum of four credits each year. Most people need 40 credits to qualify for benefits. People who delay retirement beyond full retirement age get special credit for each month they dont receive a benefit until they reach age 70.
- To find out what your retirement age is, use the Social Security Retirement Age Chart at www.ssa.gov
- You should speak with a Social Security representative in the year before you plan to retire. It may be to your advantage to start receiving your retirement benefits before you actually stop working.

The Agency Has Unveiled A New Express Interview Process To Help People Apply For Original Or Replacement Social Security Cards And Submit Necessary Proof Of Identity In Person But It Encourages The Public To Continue To Submit Applications Online
- May 31, 2021
The Social Security Administration closed its field offices to the public in March 2020 amid the Covid-19 pandemic to protect its employees and the vulnerable elderly and disabled population they serve. Fourteen months later, the agency has unveiled a new express interview process to help individuals apply for original or replacement Social Security cards and submit necessary proof of identity in person.
But the majority of the public must continue to rely on the agencys revamped and expanded online services to apply for Social Security and Medicare benefits and to access related critical information, such as estimates of future benefits.
Social Security is a massive federal program that touches nearly every Americans life, whether its paying FICA taxes during their working years to fund benefits for current recipients or collecting disability, retirement or survivor benefits on their own earnings record or that of a spouse or parent.
Through the end of 2020, nearly 65 million people received disability, retirement, and survivor benefits. As of Dec. 31, approximately 88% of the population age 65 and older were receiving benefits.
In its emergency message last Thursday, the Social Security Administration said, This process was established to address the challenges the public has faced providing enumeration and documentary proofs during the Covid-19 pandemic.
