You Need To Set Up An Account Before Retirement Age

Most people wont pay attention to this until age 50, Clark says. But I want you to have an account by age 30.

Why so early? Social Security benefits are based on your highest-earning 35 years, and you need to make sure the SSA is recording your earnings correctly.

The crazy thing is that you can see how much Social Security thinks you earned in a year, Clark says. Thats important because if they have the wrong figures, it could end up reducing the Social Security benefit you get forever.

Consumer Action Center Director Lori Silverman says theres one more big reason to get your account ready before you retire:

Setting up an online account will prevent criminals from creating an account in your name and then using it to apply for benefits.

You will need the following items to register your MySocialSecurity account:

  • A valid email address and phone number

I Want To Change My Password But I Cannot Find Or See The Last Cra Sign In Page

If you have ticked the box entitled “Do not show me this page again today” when you signed in today, the “Last CRA sign in” page will be hidden for the rest of the day. This means that the manage and view options, such as change your password, will only be available to you after midnight Eastern Time.

If you do not select “Do not show me this page again today”, this page will be displayed to you each time you sign in.

Its Important To Check Your Account Regularly

You dont have to check it every year, Clark suggests. Check it at least every third year. Its up to you and me to actively go and check. Dont wait. Do this throughout your working life.

After you create an account, mark your calendar to remember to check your account every few years. Make sure you report any mistakes to the SSA as soon as possible. It will impact your benefit!

Reasons To Set Up Your Online Social Security Account

For many of us, Social Security has a part in our financial plans for retirement or later stage of life. Even if youre years away from applying for benefits, there are some good reasons why you should set up your online Social Security account at

You can go online to ensure there arent any gaps in your earnings. Why is that important? Because the amount you receive from Social Security will be based on how much youve earned over your working career. Many people, especially those who follow boomers, change jobs frequently. Its always a possibility that an employer will fail to report your earnings. Youll want to fix that as soon as possible, so you arent shortchanged when you finally apply for benefits.

Youll protect yourself against fraud. By setting up a Social Security account, youll prevent anyone else from doing so. Much like income tax fraud, this is an identity theft crime where someone sets up a Social Security account and files for benefits in your name. You dont want to wait until you retire and find that someone else is collecting your hard-earned benefits. The most effective way to prevent that is to create your own account.

If youre wondering about the role of Social Security benefits in your retirement plans or how much income youll need in retirement, call our office. We can help you evaluate your financial plan to ensure youre on track to achieve the retirement you envision.

Early Or Late Social Security Statements Are Getting A Much

If youre old enough and have worked long enough, you may recall getting an annual Social Security statement in the mail, about three months before your birthday, with estimations of your benefits.

But budget cuts put a stop to the mailings for most workers. Now, if you want to see your personal Social Security statement, youll have to create an online account. If you dont have an account, or you have one but havent checked your statement lately, you should. The Social Security Administration has given the statement a makeover. Its shorter streamlined down to two pages from the previous four and, thankfully, better written.

I give them a lot of credit for trying to make this more user-friendly and trying to explain a variety of things like disability and survivor benefits, said Joel Eskovitz, director of Social Security and Savings at AARP Public Policy Institute. Its a lot of information to convey and generally speaking, I think theyve done a really good job.

The most useful change to the statement is a color bar chart that shows the estimated monthly retirement payments youd get each year starting at age 62 when you first become eligible. Previous statements just showed the monthly amount at 62, your full retirement age, and an estimate of what youd receive by waiting until 70. The increases stop when you reach 70.

Request A Replacement Social Security Card Online

If you already have an SSA card but its worn or frayed, or you know the card isnt lost, you may have the option to request a replacement via your Social Security My Account page. You must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old with a domestic U.S. mailing address, including an APO/FPO/DPO address.

Requesting a replacement card takes a few minutes and Social Security Administration replaces your card for free. Dont pay a service to perform this task. Your replacement card should arrive within two weeks.

Not all states allow you to replace your card online. If you have a current drivers license issued by the state of Arizona, Idaho, District of Columbia, Wisconsin, or North Dakota, or if you hold a state-issued ID or license from Iowa, Pennsylvania, Washington, Kentucky, South Dakota, Maryland, New Mexico, Michigan, Nebraska, or Mississippi, and you dont require a name change or other changes to the card, you may request a replacement card online at

Heres Why Everyone Should Create An Online Account For Social Security Benefits: Money Matters

Q: I follow your column consistently. Youve written about people who are unable to open an online account with the Social Security Administration if their credit files are frozen. And youve encouraged people to create their own Social Security account online to protect themselves.

My question: Ive frozen my credit files. Why would I need to create an online Social Security account to protect myself? If I cant open an account with frozen credit, how could anybody else open one in my name?

    R.J., Youngstown

A: You are correct that an account cant be created online if your credit files are frozen, unless you temporarily thaw them to allow SSA to access information to use as personal questions that must be answered correctly.

But someone can sign up for an online account in person. All someone needs is a persons Social Security number and a few other pieces of information. Remember that a whole trove of information including Social Security numbers was compromised in 2017 for about 150 million people — half of the adult population — when bad guys hacked into Equifaxs data base.

You can always create a My Social Security account by visiting a Social Security office, said Brandon Smith, spokesman for the Social Security Administration in Cleveland. In this case, there is no need to remove the credit freeze.

Ill acknowledge this isnt the easiest kind of identity theft. But it can and does happen.

    My Social Security

If you are currently receiving Social Security benefits, having a mySocialSecurity account is even more important.

Here are some of the things you can do with your My Social Security account:

Set-up or Change your Direct Deposit

Since March 2013, the Social Security Administration no longer mails paper checks to benefit recipients. Social Security beneficiaries are now required to receive their monthly payments electronically.

With that said, as a Social Security recipient you will have to set up direct deposit to receive your benefits. If you do not have a direct deposit account to receive your benefits, you can also sign up for a Direct Express debit card account.

If you have a bank account, you can set up your direct deposit for payment of your Social Security benefits online through your mySocialSecurity account.

In addition, if you need to change your bank account for your Social Security direct deposit payment, you can do that online by using your account.

Check the status of your Social Security Application

If youve submitted an application for Social Security or Supplemental Security Income benefits, you can check the status of your application by logging in your mySocialSecurity account. In addition, if you have a pending reconsideration or hearing request, you can also check the status of those in your mySocialSecurity online account.

The SSA offers secure sign-in via and optional extra protection to guard against identity theft. Scammers who obtain your Social Security number and address through phishing, data breaches or other means can go online and set up a My Social Security account in your name, if you havent already done so.

The threat grows once you reach age 62, the minimum claiming age for Social Security retirement benefits. Thieves could start collecting monthly payments in your name, and you might not find out about it until years later when you apply for Social Security. Only one account is permitted per Social Security number, so establishing your account early is key.

People need to plant their flag, because someone could just sign up for you, cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs, who runs the Krebs on Security website, told AARP in 2018.

Krebs said that in Social Security identity theft cases hes seen, the victims ultimately had to visit a Social Security office to resolve the problems.

If you suspect you have been the victim of identity theft, you can report this to the SSA Office of the Inspector General or visit the Federal Trade Commissions Identity information site.
