My only experience with changing direct deposit banks is with DFAS and they are so quick… any change done before cutoff for the month and the very next retired pay check goes to the new bank. My question is about changing direct deposit banks using E-Benefits for my disabil compensation pay… can someone please provide some guidance on how long it takes to take effect? Since the VA takes so long to do claims/add dependents etc does it also take months and months for a direct deposit bank change to take effect if done with E-Benefits? Anyone know what date the E-Benefits VA cutoff date is for when I would need to do this by?Thanks much…

Is It Possible To Set Up Direct Deposit With A Foreign Bank Account

Many retirees who have worked in the United States end up moving to other countries or repatriating. Direct deposit is an option for them so long as the bank in another country has an international direct deposit agreement.

In most cases, the SSA has no issue paying benefits to those living in, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

However, the list of countries where benefits are made to survivors of a deceased worker varies a bit.

This can save a lot of time and money as those in other countries will not need to exchange dollars for a local currency. However, one should be aware that the exchange rate given by the bank, may not be the best on the market. Weighing the costs and benefits of such a move should be considered before taking the step.

Cuba and North Korea are the only countries where the SSA is not allowed to send benefits through direct deposit. The SSA also states that they often have trouble sending payments to Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, but that they can make exceptions for certain eligible persons in these countries.

Benefits Of Switching To Direct Deposit For Social Security

Many people, especially as they get older, think that keeping cash or having a physical check is the safest way to protect their money. But physical money is easier to lose and more difficult to manage. Here’s why using direct deposit can be a huge help in managing your money:

    • It’s easier. It’s automatic, so you don’t have to remember to physically deposit a check.
    • It’s safer. The funds go directly into your account electronically, so there’s no risk your paper check will be lost or stolen.
    • It’s more convenient. You don’t have to go anywhere! The funds appear in your account all on their own.
    • It’s faster. Electronic transfers can happen in a matter of days or even hours in some cases. That’s a lot faster than waiting for a check in the mail and trekking to the bank to make a deposit.

Beneficiaries Can Also Have Money Deposited To A Debit Card But Paper Checks Will Be Abolished

Is it true that the Social Security Administration will no longer mail monthly checks to beneficiaries? If so, how will people receive their benefits?

Paper checks will be abolished for all federal benefits, including Social Security, eventually, but people who currently receive checks will have some extra time to adjust to the new rules. Individuals who apply for Social Security, Veterans Affairs or other federal benefits on or after May 1, 2011, will have to select an electronic payment method — either a debit card that will be reloaded each month or direct deposit to a bank account. The direct deposit option, which is safer than a check and involves no fees, is the best option for most people. But current beneficiaries who receive monthly checks will continue to receive their benefits in that form until March 1, 2013. After that, they must select an electronic payment method.

If youd like personalized attention, call the Treasurys electronic payment helpline at 800-333-1795. Your bank can also help you make the change. Weve reached out to banks and theyre very eager to convert people over to direct deposit, and they can help a person identify the routing number on their check, says Henderson. He recommends discussing the new payment options with elderly relatives and assisting them, if necessary, to make the switch to direct deposit before the 2013 deadline.
