Final Thoughts On Reporting Naturalization To Ssa

Reporting naturalization to Social Security Administration is very important.

After naturalizing to become a U.S. citizen, you are not done with the citizenship process.

Sometimes, during the oath ceremony, you will be told to update your new status with Social Security but this is not guaranteed.

Its up to you to update SSA and let them know you are now a U.S. citizen.

Some new Americans wonder whether its necessary at all to update your status from permanent resident to a naturalized citizen.

Ill tell you that it benefits you more to do this.

Of course, there is no consequence if you completely forget and choose not to notify Social Security.

Some of the benefits you get are access to some disability and retirement benefits that are only available to U.S. citizens.

Some people decide to apply for a U.S. passport first which is perfectly fine.

Since updating your status only benefits you, its in your best interest to remember to do it at some point.

S To Complete Form Ss

Here’s how to complete the 18 items on the form:

  • Provide your first name, full middle name, and last name as you want them shown on the card. If you had a different name at birth or previously went by another name, provide those here, as well.
  • If you previously had a Social Security number, write it here. If not, leave this section blank.
  • Enter the city and state or foreign country where you were born.
  • Provide the month, date, and year you were born.
  • Check the appropriate box to indicate whether you are a U.S. citizen, legal alien allowed to work, legal alien not allowed to work, or other. If you fall into one of the latter two categories, youll need to submit extra documentation with your Form SS-5 because, as a non-citizen, the government wont give you a Social Security card unless you can prove that you need one. In that case, you may want to contact the Social Security Administration beforehand to see if you qualify for a number and ask what documentation is required in your situation.
  • You dont have to fill out items 6 or 7, which relate to ethnicity and race. But if you want to help with the governments informational and statistical analysis of SS-5 form users, you can …
  • Check the boxes that apply to you.
  • Do you identify as male or as female? Check the appropriate box.
  • Provide the names and Social Security numbers for each of your birth parents, or check the unknown boxes if you dont have this information.
  • Provide todays date.
  • Sign the form.

      • U.S. drivers license
      • State-issued non-drivers identification card

      2. Complete Form SS-5

No bureaucratic process would be complete without paperwork!

Form SS-5 is an application for a social security card.

Because you changed your name, you will need to apply for a new social security card.

You can download it online here.

Print out Form SS-5, fill it out, and sign it in your new name.

      3. Mail your application in or take it to your local Social Security office

The last step to your social security name change is to submit your application.

Start by finding theclosest SSA office.

The nearest SSA office will appear.

You then have two choices. You can mail your application and documents to this SSA office, or you can visit in person.

We suggest that you visit in person if you can. That way, you dont have to mail in sensitive documents you may need before they return in the mail.

Youll also receive a receipt listing the details of your name changewhich means you can proceed to the next steps of your name change process that much sooner.

You will receive your new SSA card in the mail in approximately 10-14 business days, along with your documents if you mailed them in.

Your Social Security number will not change.

As an added bonus, the SSA will also notify the Internal Revenue Service about your name change. One less thing to worry about when tax season rolls around!

If It Is Preferable To Have A Social Security Number Soon After Arrival And Your Child Did Not Arrive From The Philippines Or Korea:

How To Update Social Security After Citizenship

For many families, this is the preferred route even though it involves multiple visits to the social security office. All children are eligible for a social security card as soon as they arrive home, as long as they did not arrive from Korea or the Philippines. The card issued, however, will be in the name reflected on the childs foreign decree and/or foreign passport. The child will also be entered into the social security system as a permanent resident. A second trip will be necessary in the future to change the name and citizenship status associated with the number.

If this option is preferred, simply visit your social security office and apply for a social security card. Since different offices sometimes ask for different items, it is best to bring all adoption related paperwork with you.

      All families should bring:

      Your Social Security Responsibilities

Social Security is a system which makes it possible to track earnings record and then apply benefits based on contribution once that person has retired or become disabled.

All working citizens and residents of the United States must have a Social Security number unless they are legally exempted. That means all legal citizens have responsibilities that pertain to updating their Social Security record if their information or status changes. We have put together the most common reasons you may have to update your Social Security record.

Submitting Your Application By Mail Or In Person

The final step is to submit the SS-5 form and your original or certified documents to your local Social Security office or card center, either by mail or in person. You can find the address online using the Social Security Administration’s Field Office Locator.

If you apply by mail, the office or center will mail your original documents back to you along with your new Social Security card.

One advantage of going in person is that you eliminate the possibility that sensitive or difficult-to-replace personal documents, such as your original birth certificate, driver’s license, or passport, will get lost or stolen in the mail. If you have any questions, you can also call that office beforehand and ask which documents you need to bring with you.

Generally, the Social Security Administration says, it will take two to four weeks to process your application and send you your card.

For Families Whose Child Arrived On An Ir

Wait until your childs Certificate of Citizenship is received. This will arrive automatically in your mail in your first months home.

Visit your local social security office and apply for a social security card. Since different offices sometimes ask for different items, it is best to bring all adoption related paperwork with you. Definitely include your childs foreign adoption decree, foreign birth certificate and/or abandonment certificate, foreign or US passport, Certificate of Citizenship, and a photo ID for yourself . Your child should be present. Please note that if your childs adoption decree, foreign passport, and certificate of citizenship do not accurately reflect the name you have chosen for your child, you will need to make a second trip to the social security office once you have a US decree and/or birth certificate noting the name change. Social Security will simply change the name associated with the number, not the number itself. You obviously also have the option of simply waiting to apply until you have the name change.

The next step is to find original documents youll need to ensure you have the right information. Remember, you are not applying for a new Social Security card but replacing an existing one.

The SS-5 is used for a lot of different purposes, but to replace your Social Security card in Nebraska you will need documentation to prove your identity and date of birth. Examples of such documents for U.S. citizens include:

    • U.S. passport
    • A valid, unexpired U.S. drivers license
    • U.S. birth certificate

If you were born outside the United States, youll have a different set of documents to first prove your U.S. citizenship or proof of legal, work-authorized status.

Be sure to submit legal, original copiesnot photocopies or notarized replacements.

If you are unable to find the right documents, and unable to replace them in a timely manner, you may be able use other documents. Its best to bring these to the Social Security Office rather than mailing them. These documents include:

    • Employee identification card
    • Health insurance card
    • The secondary documents must clearly show your full name, your date of birth or age, and preferably will have a current photograph. If you are in doubt about whether you have the right documents, call the SSA at Call us at 1-800-772-1213 for guidance.

For non-citizens, immigration papers are a must, or a foreign passport with photograph and age and name identification. Your immigration status should show up on whatever documents you use.

What Is The Social Security Number

The 9-digit Social Security number is one of the last surviving vestiges of Franklin D. Roosevelts New Deal. In its origins, the SSN was used to track a persons earnings and determine benefits. But now, years later, it can be used for a wide variety of financial transactions, including opening a new bank account, tracking taxes, making large purchases, and building credit history.

Social Security is not just for retirees, and others may qualify as well. In fact, according to the Social Security Administrations Understanding the Benefits packet, Social Security provides more funding to children than any other federal agency.
