  • How Do I Change The Name On My Social Security Card

There are a couple of ways you can perform a Social Security card name change. The easiest is by making the request online through your My Social Security account. Depending on the state you live in, you might be unable to complete the request online. If you cannot, then you will need to mail in the application for name change with the required documentation or visit your local Social Security office.

    If You Want Extra Security

We offer you the choice to add extra security when you create an online account. In the past, we told you Social Security would never ask for your credit card number or other financial information. We have changed our policy for this one service. Now, we may ask you for the last eight digits of your Visa, Mastercard, or Discover credit card, or some other financial information. Once you give us this additional information, we will send you a letter in the mail in five to 10 business days. You will need this letter to complete the voluntary process to add extra security.

You can upgrade to extra security at any time. Adding extra security does not change the way that you sign in to your account. You must still sign in with your username, password, and a unique security code we will provide each time you sign in.

When To Avoid Using Your Social Security Number

Federal law basically lets anyone ask for your Social Security number, but that doesnt mean you need to give it out. You should use your Social Security number as infrequently as possible. Just because someone asks for it doesnt mean they truly need it.

For example, though most medical providers will ask for your SSN, you can leave the line asking for it blank when filling out medical paperwork, and often, no one will question it. Your doctors office and other businesses can use other information to identify you and keep track of your records. That said, while you can refuse to provide your SSN, the other party can also refuse to do business with you.

You also shouldnt carry your Social Security card around with you unless you will be using it for a specific purpose that day, such as when youre filling out paperwork to start a new job, and you have to show it to your employer as proof of citizenship .

You dont want to risk losing your card or having it stolen since thieves can use this number, in combination with your other personal data, to apply for credit, take out loans, get a job, or even get health care in your name, creating a potentially massive identity theft problem for you to clean up.

Instead, keep the card in a secure place at home or in a safe deposit box at the bank. If your card is lost or stolen, youll want to apply for a new one.

    Start With The Basics

First, lets establish a baseline of knowledge. You might already know these basic rules, but its important to ensure we understand the basics before we head into the more complex.

    • Usually the earliest you can take Social Security is age 62, unless other special circumstances apply, such as widows benefits. The advantage to claiming the benefit at that early age is you can have those monthly checks arriving a good four to five years before you reach full retirement age.
    • The downside is that you will receive a reduced amount about 75% of your full benefit and that reduction is permanent, no matter how long you live. Also, if you continue to work, the government puts a limit on how much money you can make without being penalized. For 2019, that annual income limit is $17,640. For every $2 you go over the limit, $1 is deducted from your benefit.
    • Lets say you want to wait until your full-retirement age, though. For most people these days, thats somewhere between age 66 and 67. At that point, there is no income limit, so you could continue to work at your full-time job with no threat of a Social Security penalty.
    • Finally, you can also delay claiming your benefit, and if you do so, you will be rewarded with larger monthly checks. However, theres no advantage to waiting past age 70, because at that point the benefit stops growing.

Check The Social Security Administration’s Math

Your statement includes a record of the earnings on which you’ve paid taxes and an estimate of the benefits you will receive at various retirement ages: 62, 67, and 70. It is always wise for you to check the SSA’s numbers. Don’t be surprised if you uncover an error. Some government-watchers estimate that the SSA makes mistakes on at least 3% of the total official earnings records it keeps.

When you check your record, make sure that the Social Security number noted on your earnings statement is your own, and make sure the earned income amounts listed on the agency’s records mesh with your own records of earnings as listed on your income tax forms or pay stubs.
