What Do I Need To Get A Replacement Social Security Card

There are a series of steps that you need to complete in order to get that new card in your hand. Everything related to your Social Security file is managed by the Social Security Administration, so this is the agency that you will be working with through this process. They handle everything from issuing new cards to sending replacement cards to processing name changes. Their process for obtaining a replacement is pretty straightforward.

You should note that they do have some limits on the number of times you can request a replacement card. You are limited to three replacements per year and a total of 10 during your lifetime. Cards that are replaced due to a name change or change in work status do not count toward your limit. If you are getting close to the limit, then you probably need to assess your method of storing and keeping your card safe. But thats a topic for another day!

Before the SSA will issue that replacement card to you, you will need to provide them some information about your identity as well as prove your identity to them. They cannot issue new cards without this documentation because it would be too easy to commit fraud and pose as someone else. At a high level, youll need to complete the request form and prove that you are who you say you are. Here are more details on the specific next steps.

Theres A Social Security Spousal Benefit

Marriage brings couples an advantage when it comes to Social Security. Namely, one spouse can take what’s called a spousal benefit, worth up to 50% of the other spouse’s Social Security benefit. Put simply, if your monthly Social Security benefit is worth $2,000 but your spouse’s own benefit is only worth $500, your spouse can collect a spousal benefit worth $1,000 — bringing in $500 more in income per month. Just as the benefit based on your own work history is reduced if you claim it early, the same is true for a spousal benefit. That 50% figure is the maximum amount that only a spouse who is at least full retirement age is eligible for. Taking the spousal benefit early at, say, age 62, reduces the amount to as little as 32.5% of the higher earners benefit. If you take your own benefit early and then later switch to a spousal benefit, your spousal benefit will still be reduced.

Social Security Name Change

Did you recently get married or divorced and need to change the name on your Social Security card? Well, youve come to the right place.

The name change process can be a pain, especially without proper guidance. It all starts with your Social Security name change.

This guide outlines the right way to change or correct your name on your social security card. Lets get started!

Overview

The first thing you need to do after your legal name change is to update your name with the Social Security Administration .

The SSA is the United States issuing agency for Social Security cards.

Your updated Social Security card is the gateway to your name change process.

Every federal and state entity links your identity to your SSA record, so you need to update it to get a new drivers license and passport, and any other form of photo ID.

Updating your social security card is a fairly straightforward procedure, and the new card can take as few as ten days to arrive in the mail. However, you cannot apply online, so you must visit your local SSA office in person or mail in an application.

What Is The Future Of Social Security

Social Security is expected to run out of cash reserves in 2034, according to the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund, the retirement benefits account managed by the Social Security Administration.

However, this doesnt mean the program would be bankrupt and unable to pay out benefits. If Congress does nothing to reform the system by 2034, Social Security would still be able to pay 79 percent of promised benefits until 2090.

Social Security has run out of cash reserves before. Congress reformed the program in the 1980s by taxing benefits based on income levels and by gradually increasing the full retirement age from 65 to 67.

Social Security Disability Programs

In addition to retirement benefits, the Social Security Administration manages two programs that provide benefits to people who are disabled or blind.

Social Security Disability Insurance Program
SSDI supports disabled or blind individuals by providing benefits based on their workers contributions to the Social Security trust fund. Your contributions are based on your earnings or your spouses or parents earnings while in the workforce. Your dependents may also be eligible for SSDI benefits based on your earnings.
Supplemental Security Income Program
SSI benefits are paid out as cash assistance to people with limited incomes and resources who are elderly, blind or disabled. These benefits may also include blind or disabled children. SSI payments are a federal benefit funded by the general fund of the United States not the Social Security trust fund. Some states provide additional state supplemental benefits in addition to the federal SSI payments.

In some cases, people may be eligible for both SSI and SSDI at the same time. The Social Security Administration calls these concurrent benefits. This can happen when a disability qualifies you for Social Security Disability Benefits, but you only get a small amount of monthly SSDI benefits. This may qualify you to receive SSI benefits as well.
