What Can A Thief Do With My Social Security Number

There are numerous things that a thief can do with your SSN, and none of them are good. One of the most common things that happen when someone is using your Social Security number is opening credit accounts in your name. They might get credit cards, bank accounts, or loans in your name and use them to purchase items. A thief might even use your SSN to file a fraudulent tax return with the Internal Revenue Service. Taking this action could allow them to receive a large tax refund, and then you might be on the hook later for the fraudulent return.

What Do I Need To Get A Replacement Social Security Card

There are a series of steps that you need to complete in order to get that new card in your hand. Everything related to your Social Security file is managed by the Social Security Administration, so this is the agency that you will be working with through this process. They handle everything from issuing new cards to sending replacement cards to processing name changes. Their process for obtaining a replacement is pretty straightforward.

You should note that they do have some limits on the number of times you can request a replacement card. You are limited to three replacements per year and a total of 10 during your lifetime. Cards that are replaced due to a name change or change in work status do not count toward your limit. If you are getting close to the limit, then you probably need to assess your method of storing and keeping your card safe. But thats a topic for another day!

Before the SSA will issue that replacement card to you, you will need to provide them some information about your identity as well as prove your identity to them. They cannot issue new cards without this documentation because it would be too easy to commit fraud and pose as someone else. At a high level, youll need to complete the request form and prove that you are who you say you are. Here are more details on the specific next steps.

Q: A reader submitted this question: Hi, I have just filed a voluntary I-407 form at the American Embassy, where I renounced the green card Ive had since 1971. Am I still entitled to Social Security benefits? How will the Social Security treaty with Chile apply? Ive worked 35+ years and paid into Social Security, so will my benefits be forwarded to me directly or will I have to wait till retirement age, which would not make any sense since Im no longer a resident? Am I entitled to my benefits getting transferred?

A: Chad and Peggy Creveling of Creveling & Creveling Private Wealth Advisory respond:

If you worked legally in the U.S. and paid Social Security or payroll taxes for at least 40 qualifying quarters , you are typically eligible for U.S. Social Security retirement benefits.

If eligible for Social Security benefits, you will have to wait until you are 62 years old to receive reduced benefits and full retirement age to receive full benefits.

Relinquishing your green card does not change your eligibility for U.S. Social Security retirement benefits.

Although you may be eligible for U.S. Social Security benefits, your ability to receive payments outside the U.S. depends on a hodgepodge of treaties and international agreements based on your country of citizenship and residency.

Call Your Bank To Report Your Debit Card As Stolen

The first card I reported stolen was my debit card. As long as you report a debit card is missing within two business days of the loss, you’re only responsible for up to $50 in unauthorized purchases.

If you wait more than two days , you could be on the hook for up to $500 in unauthorized purchases. If you wait longer than 60 days, you could be held responsible for all of them. Read more here about the difference between debit and credit cards.

But if a thief has accessed your bank account via your debit card, the money could be debited from your accountand it could take time to recover it. I didn’t want my checking account to be touched, so my bank was the first call I made. Report that your card has been lost or stolen they will cancel that card and send you a new one.

If you had checks in your wallet, report that immediately as well. Your bank can allow you to put a freeze on your checking account so that no purchases made via check will be approved. To protect yourself completely in the case of stolen checks, you will probably have to close that account and get a new one with a completely different number.

If you do this, make sure you update your direct deposit and automated monthly payment information. Learn more about check fraud here.

If You Do Not Have One Of These Specific Documents Or You Cannot Get A Replacement For One Of Them Within 10 Days They Will Ask To See Other Documents

Since you must provide original documentation you may not want to mail the application in. One alternative is to get copies certified by the issuing agencynot photocopies or notarized copies. If you are filing an application on behalf of someone else, you must produce evidence of your relationship to, or responsibility for, that person. You must also show proof of your identity.
