Do You Need to Replace Your Social Security Card?

You can replace your Social Security card for free if it is lost or stolen. However, you may not need to get a replacement card. Knowing your Social Security number is what’s important. You are limited to three replacement cards in a year and 10 during your lifetime. Legal name changes do not count toward these limits. Also, you may not be affected by these limits if you can prove you need the card to prevent a significant hardship.

You must present original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies. All documents must be current . We cannot accept a receipt showing you applied for the document.

You may be able to request your replacement Social Security card online. Our online service is a fast and secure way to get a replacement. How To Apply For A Replacement Card Online

You can create and use a My Social Security account to apply for a replacement Social Security card online if you:

  • Are a U.S. citizen age 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address
  • Are not requesting a name change or any other change to your card
  • Have a drivers license or state-issued identification card from one of the participating states or the District of Columbia

Some states have different rules. In Delaware and Wisconsin, this service is available only if you have a drivers license. If your drivers license or state-issued identification card was issued by one of the states listed below, this service is not yet available.

  • Alaska
  • Oklahoma
  • West Virginia

The SSA says to check back later if you live in one of those states, as they are working to make this online service available to those states.

Additionally, this service is also not yet available if your drivers license or identification card was issued by a U.S. territory, including American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Finally, if you are a U.S. citizen and you have not gotten a replacement Social Security card or had a name change recently, you may not be eligible to use the online replacement card application.

Visit The Local Ssa Office

Print out and bring your application and the original documents to your local SSA office. If you filled out the application online, the site will direct you to a page where you can find the closest SSA office in your area. You can also submit your application using an online form, provided you meet certain criteria outlined below.

Place A Fraud Alert On Your Credit File

Contact any of the three major credit agencies Equifax, Transunion, and Experian. You only need to contact one of the three agencies because the one you contact will report the alert to all other agencies. Original Card For A Us Born Child

Important

Social Security must verify a birth record for all U.S.-born applicants who apply for an original SSN. An exception is made for a parent who applies for a baby’s SSN at the hospital when the baby is born. To verify a birth record, we will contact the office that issued it.

According to the Social Security Administration , it is far more important that you simply know your Social Security number than it is to actually carry your card with you.While you may need to know your Social Security number for filling out various applications, you are rarely required to actually show anyone your Social Security card. You do not even need your card when applying for Social Security benefits.
