When Will I Receive My First Social Security Check

Do You Need to Replace Your Social Security Card?

This is a common question we get when we do a full Social Security Benefit session. When will I receive my first check. Its important to understand that As of March 1, 2013, the Social Security Administration stopped mailing paper checks. There are two ways you can receive your benefits:

1. Direct deposit of your Social Security checks. This option puts them right into your bank account on the day they are paid.

You dont have to worry about your check being lost or worry that funds will not get to the bank in time if you are out of town. Sign up or learn more at Frequently Asked Questions About Social Security Direct Deposit.

2. Direct Express® Debit Card If you do not sign up for direct deposit, your benefits will be paid to you via Direct Express® debit card option. This card will work anywhere that takes Debit Mastercard®. You can also use your Direct Express® debit card to get cash back at the grocery store or to purchase money orders at the post office.

Social Security checks are deposited on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on your day of birth. The Social Security check schedule works as follows:

If you were born on the:

1st10th of the month: Expect your Social Security check to be deposited on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.

When Are Social Security Numbers Required

I previously wrote about why a medical office would require a Social Security number, but readers reacted with a slew of more questions regarding that coveted piece of identification. Nan in Oregon wants to know who else can ask for it, Jerry in New York wonders if he could be discriminated against if he doesn’t reveal his Social Security number, and one reader may have just been duped into giving it out.

You wrote about giving out Social Security numbers at doctors offices. Who else can ask for this information?– Nan, Ashland, Ore.

Any business can request your Social Security number, but that doesnt mean you are legally required to give it to them. Heres the problem: Social Security numbers were never meant to be a personal identifier, but theyve become just that. Ed Mierzwinski, Consumer Programs Director at U.S. PIRG, points out that there is no law that prevents a business from discriminating against you or not doing business with you, if you do not provide the requested information.

There are certain times when Social Security numbers must be used. This is not a complete list, but here are some of the major situations when they are required:

  • Most financial transactions
  • Tax returns
  • Medicare benefits
  • Contact with the Social Security Administration
  • Applications for a hunting, fishing or other recreational license.

Can you refuse to provide a Social Security number on an employment application? Could this be a form of discrimination?– Jerry C., Rochester, N.Y.

Documents Required For A Social Security Card Replacement

To successfully get a new social security card you will need to gather some essential original documents or certified copies of the originals, issued by the respective agency.

The documents you need to gather to obtain a Social Security Card must:

  • Show proof of US citizenship: your U.S. birth certificate or a U.S. passport.
  • Show proof of your age: a US birth certificate, US hospital birth record, US passport or religious record made before the age of 5 showing your date of birth are acceptable.
  • Demonstrate your identity: a U.S. drivers license, U.S. passport or employee state-issued ID card, school ID card, military card or health insurance card are adequate as proof of identity.
  • Please note that all of these documents must be up to date. The SSA does not accept expired documents. It will not accept receipts that show you had applied for these documents in the past, either.
