    Finding Your Social Security Number

    Social Security denies woman

If you find yourself thinking, What is my SSN, then one of the easiest ways to find it is by looking on existing documentation that you may already have. Believe it or not, your Social Security number is listed on many documents that you might already have in your possession. It is a nine-digit number that will usually contain two hyphens. First, try and locate your Social Security card. Your number will be plainly displayed there. If you cannot find your card, there is still hope.

You can still try some of these other documents that are likely to have your number on them. Look for some of your old tax returns. Your number will be listed typically on the first page of your tax return. You can also check your W-2 from your employer and maybe even your bank statements. Both of these documents are common places to find your SSN listed. If you still have no luck, check your drivers license. While most states no longer display your SSN on your license, it is worth a look. If you have an immigrant visa, then your USCIS Forms are the next place you should look. SSNs are common on your visa paperwork, so you can often find your number there. If you are unable to find your number anywhere you look, then youll need to contact the SSA to start the process of getting a replacement Social Security card.

Social Security Matters: My Socal Security Card Is Incorrect What Should I Do

      Dear Rusty:

My sister and I have the same first and last names but are distinguished by our middle names. Our last name consists of two family names, which gives us both four, with only our middle names unique. We received two Social Security cards with the same name , each with a unique number, but with our last name misspelled. So, my questions are: Which card is mine, and which is my sisters? Is it okay that our last name is misspelled?

I called Social Security and was told to make an appointment online, which I tried but could not because it wouldnt accept my last name. I dont know what to do now and hope you can advise me.

      Signed: Confused Sister

      Dear Confused Sister:

You havent shared your age, but unless youre ready to apply for Social Security, you and your sister have time to correct your last name in your Social Security records. In any case, your Social Security Number is what is used to record your earnings for the purpose of future SS benefits, so you arent losing anything where your earnings credits are concerned. You should, however, get your correct last name reflected in your Social Security records to be sure that your future benefits will be properly paid.

How can you Make a Social Security Card Name Change

Social Security recognizes as valid any marriage that was recognized under state law as being a valid marriage when it was entered into. Social Security looks to state law and government-issued documents to determine marital status it is not based on the gender marker in your Social Security record. For this reason, changing your gender marker with Social Security will not affect your or your spouses right to Social Security benefits. In most states, you can request a replacement card using the online service through the Social Security Administration website at You can simply use your account there to request the replacement as long as you are not requesting any other changes like a name change. However, if you do not already have an account, you will likely be unable to go that route since you must know your SSN to create the account.

In that case, you will need to head down to your local Social Security office. Be prepared to bring documents that will prove your identity such as a drivers license, U.S. Passport, or state issued ID card. If you do not have any of these documents, the SSA might accept other documents like a health insurance card, school identification card, or U.S. military ID or identification number. You should note that a birth certificate will not serve as proof of your ID. It proves your date of birth and age when obtaining a card for the first time, but it does not prove identity. You should also note that you will always have to provide original documents. Photocopies or even notarized copies are not valid for proving your identity.

Another big change affects the many people who collect Social Security benefits before full retirement age while still earning some income. In 2021, the SSA allowed recipients to earn up to $18,960 before it started temporarily withholding $1 in benefits for every $2 they earned in income. In 2022, that threshold jumped to $19,560.

Those who reach full retirement age in 2022 can earn up to $51,960 before the SSA withholds $1 for every $3 earned, up from $50,520 in 2021. The so-called income test never applies after a recipient reaches full retirement age.

Opponents Say Bidens Expansions Could End Up Hurting Seniors

Depending on who you ask, President Bidens Build Back Better bill is either dead, on life support, is being reborn as a series of smaller bills, or wont survive intact despite its core provisions eventually passing. Either way, the bill and the spending packages Biden has already signed has plenty of detractors who worry about its impact on Social Security.

The conservative Heritage Foundation, for example, outlined its case for why Bidens spending both proposed spending and that which has already taken place could make it harder to confront the programs nearly $20 trillion in unfunded liabilities. That, the administrations opponents argue, will force a reduction in benefits that could cost seniors hundreds of dollars per month starting in 2034, when the Social Security Trust is expected to be depleted.
