How Will Ssdi And Ssi Recipients Get Their Stimulus Checks

Social security recipients still waiting to find out when they will get their stimulus checks

SSDI and SSI recipients who receive their monthly benefit payments by Direct Express debit card should receive their stimulus payments by Direct Express. This was not necessarily true for the first and second payments, but the IRS says most disability recipients should receive their third payments by Direct Express. Others might either receive a direct deposit , a paper check, or a prepaid Visa debit card.

The debit cards, issued by MetaBank, are called Economic Impact Payment cards. After activating the card, you can use your EIP card for purchases or use it to withdraw cash . You can also transfer the funds from your EIP card directly into your own bank account, after you register for online access.

Democrats In Congress Are Pushing For A Fourth Stimulus Check

Democrats in the House and the Senate are pushing;for another round of stimulus payments for Americans still reeling financially during the pandemic.

Some Democratic lawmakers;are also urging Biden to extend unemployment benefits and a child tax credit payment program, in addition to recurring stimulus payments. In March, Congress extended a weekly $300 unemployment payment until early September.;

“We urge you to include recurring direct payments and automatic unemployment insurance extensions tied to economic conditions in your Build Back Better long-term economic plan,” 21 senators wrote in a letter to Biden in late March.;

If Someone Else Oversees My Federal Benefits Account How Will I Get My Stimulus Check

If someone, also known as a representative payee, helps manage your Social Security benefits on your behalf, that person — a relative, friend or someone appointed on behalf of an organization –;should discuss your benefits with you, the beneficiary. That’s according to guidance from the Social Security Administration. So if you’d like to use your money, the person managing your account should provide you with the stimulus payment.;

“Your Individual Representative Payee; should have received your EIP to the same direct deposit account or Direct Express card as your monthly Social Security or SSI payment,”;the SSA says on its site. “For an Organizational Representative Payee, the payee likely received the EIP electronically or by paper check in the mail.”

The SSA says representative payees aren’t required to account for the stimulus payment when they complete their annual accounting form, as it’s not considered a Social Security benefit.

Amount Of Your Third Stimulus Check

Every eligible American will receive a $1,400 third stimulus check “base amount.” The base amount jumps to $2,800 for married couples filing a joint tax return. You also get an extra $1,400 for each dependent in your family .

Not everyone will receive the full amount, though. As with the first two stimulus payments, third-round stimulus checks will be reduced potentially to zero for people reporting an adjusted gross income above a certain amount on their latest tax return. If you filed your most recent tax return as a single filer, your third stimulus check will be phased-out if your AGI is $75,000 or more. That threshold jumps to $112,500 for head-of-household filers, and to $150,000 for married couples filing a joint return. Third-round stimulus checks will be completely phased out for single filers with an AGI above $80,000, head-of-household filers with an AGI over $120,000, and joint filers with an AGI exceeding $160,000.

You can use our handy Third Stimulus Check Calculator to get a customized estimated payment amount. All you have to do is answer three easy questions.

Who Qualifies For Third Stimulus Check

30 million people may now get their $1,400 stimulus checks ...

Americans who made up to $75,000 in 2020 will get the maximum $1,400 check. Couples who file taxes jointly and made up to $150,000 will get $2,800. There’s a $1,400 kicker for each dependent in the household.

This batch includes payments for people who did not have information on file with the IRS, but have recently filed a tax return and now qualify.

Third Stimulus Checks And Ssi: What It Means For Social Security Recipients

ST. LOUIS The U.S. Treasury has started;sending out $1,400 payments;as part of the recently passed American Rescue Plan but what does that mean for people on Social Security and when will SSI recipients receive their stimulus check?

According to the IRS,;the third round of economic stimulus, known to the Treasury as EIP3, will be sent to people who didnt file a return but receive Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits , Railroad Retirement benefits, Supplemental Security Income or Veterans Affairs benefits. This is similar to the first and second rounds of Economic Impact Payments, often referred to as EIP1 and EIP2.

The IRS has not confirmed the official payment date. Social Security recipients will get the payment the same way they would normally receive Social Security benefits.

For those who;received EIP1 or EIP2 but dont receive;a payment via direct deposit, they will generally receive a check or, in some instances, a prepaid debit card . A payment will not be added to an existing EIP card mailed for the first or second round of stimulus payments, the IRS says.

While the payment date for many recipients was March 18, a specific date for Social Security recipients has not been confirmed.

What’s Going On With Direct Express

Many people who receive federal benefits get monthly payments on existing prepaid debit cards through Direct Express.;

But the Direct Express site only noted on March 23: “According to the IRS, updates on the timing of Economic Impact Payments for federal beneficiaries are expected soon. This includes information for Direct Express cardholders who didnt file a tax return in 2019 or 2020. Updates will be posted on IRS.gov as soon as possible.”;

The Direct Express program provides;4.5 million Americans; the majority of whom do not have a bank account with a prepaid debit card to receive their monthly Social Security or veterans benefit payments.;The expectation is that the IRS would put those stimulus payments automatically on existing Direct Express cards.

The IRS is rolling out the stimulus payments in batches including by direct deposit, as well as mailing paper checks and plastic prepaid debit cards.;

Many people who received their money already had filed tax returns, as they made enough money to be required to file a return.;

The second batch of payments includes about 17 million direct deposit payments, which were officially available Wednesday,;that totaled more;than $38 billion.

Those bringing home better than average paychecks won’t get money this time around, though.

For example, a married couple filing a joint return won’t receive the third payment if their adjusted gross income exceeds $160,000.

Which Federal Beneficiaries Are Included

Many federal beneficiaries who filed 2019 or 2020 returns or used the online Non-Filers tool last year were issued Economic Impact Payments, if eligible, during the past three weeks, the IRS said.

The latest update applies to Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, and Railroad Retirement Board beneficiaries who didnt file a 2019 or 2020 tax return or didnt use the Non-Filers tool.

Could Someone Else Have Received My Payment

When will Social Security recipients get the third stimulus check?

For some disability recipients who have representative payees, the IRS deposited the first stimulus payment into the representative payee’s bank account or sent the payee a check. But since the stimulus money isn’t a Social Security or SSI benefit, the representative payee is not responsible for managing it. Disability recipients who want to use the money on their own were instructed to ask their payees for it.

Similarly, some disability lawyers reported receiving first stimulus payments that were meant for former clients whom the lawyers helped get disability benefits. Lawyers who received the money erroneously were instructed to reverse the direct deposits to the IRS. The Treasury Department was expected to fix this error for the second stimulus payment.

Beware of Stimulus Check Scams
Scammers claiming to be from the Treasury Department or the IRS have been calling, texting, and emailing disability recipients, asking for personal financial information or for a fee to expedite your stimulus payment. Do not respond; the IRS will not contact you for your information, and you do not have to pay a fee to receive your check.

    Payment Status Not Available Message

    If you aren’t having luck with the Get My Payment tool, keep checking your bank account or Direct Express card, or wait for a letter from the IRS. The IRS will mail you a letter several weeks after the agency deposits your stimulus money or mails your paper check. The letter will tell you how and when the payment was made. If you didn’t receive the money, the letter will tell you how to contact the IRS.

    Some disability recipients saw this message when they logged on to the IRS’s Get My Payment tool in January or February: Payment Status #2 – Not Available. The IRS has indicated that these individuals will not receive a stimulus check by direct deposit or mail, and they will have to file a 2020 tax return to claim their Recovery Rebate Credit . See above for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return. These messages have now disappeared and will be replaced by information about the third payment.

    How Will A Stimulus Payment Affect Social Security Disability

    Whether you receive benefits through SSI or SSDI, a stimulus payment should not affect your eligibility to continue receiving them. SSDI does not take into consideration the assets or income you receive that is not from working or through self-employment in determining eligibility, so a stimulus payment would not affect your SSDI benefits.

    SSI recipients, who must comply with strict limits on income and financial resources, would normally be concerned about receiving a substantial payment, such as a stimulus check. However, Social Security has taken steps to protect people who receive stimulus payments while receiving disability benefits through SSI.

    According to Social Security, it will not consider the payments as income for SSI eligibility purposes. Do not be concerned about the payment affecting countable resources you are permitted to own while on SSI. It will not count as a resource for 12 months.

    Discuss eligibility concerns with a disability advocate

    When questions arise about SSI or SSDI, a Social Security disability advocate at London Disability is your best source for advice you can trust and superior representation. Whether applying for benefits, appealing an adverse determination, or any questions concerning Social Security disability, speak with an SSD advocate.

    Support For A Fourth Stimulus Check

    A group of Democratic Senators, including Ron Wyden of Oregon, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, sent a letter to President Joe Biden at the end of March requesting recurring direct payments and automatic unemployment insurance extensions tied to economic conditions.

    As the Senators reasoned in their letter, this crisis is far from over, and families deserve certainty that they can put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. Families should not be at the mercy of constantly-shifting legislative timelines and ad hoc solutions.

    An earlier letter to President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris from 53 Representatives, led by Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, carved out a similar position. Recurring direct payments until the economy recovers will help ensure that people can meet their basic needs, provide racially equitable solutions, and shorten the length of the recession.

    Additional co-signers included New Yorks Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Michigans Rashida Tlaib, two other notable names among House Progressives. The letter didnt place a number on the requested stimulus payments. But a tweet soon after put it at $2,000 per month for the length of the pandemic.

    $2,000 monthly payments until the pandemic is over.

    What If The Irs Didn’t Send Me The Full Amount For The First Or Second Stimulus Payment

    According to the IRS, people who receive Social Security retirement, SSDI, SSI and Railroad Retirement benefits, as well as Veterans Affairs beneficiaries, were automatically eligible for the first two stimulus payments. If you receive these federal benefits as your only form of income, you;weren’t required to file a federal income tax return;in 2018 or 2019. Under the CARES Act, you should have received a stimulus check automatically.

    If that money didn’t arrive, it’s possible you;might have had a payment garnished;for;child support;or funds diverted to pay a specific kind of creditor, but the rules changed with the second check. However, an;IRS error could also be a potential culprit;or the IRS may have needed more information about your eligibility.;

    Social Security Recipients Finally Getting $1400 Stimulus Checks

    Millions of senior citizens were left sitting empty-handed because the Social Security Administration didnt turn over the necessary payment information to the IRS in a timely fashion.;;

    After weeks of delays, millions of Social Security recipients are finally seeing their coronavirusstimulus checks in their respective bank accounts and mailboxes.;;

    For the current fourth batch of stimulus payments, roughly nineteen million payments representing more than $26 billion were earmarked for Social Security beneficiaries who did not file their 2019 or 2020 taxes or did not use the Internal Revenue Service Non-Filer tool for direct payments, and more than three million payments totaling $5 billion were sent to Supplemental Security Income and Railroad Retirement Board beneficiaries.;

    The chief reason for the holdup in the transfer of the much-needed funds was due to the Social Security Administration , according to a recent letter from the House Ways and Means Committee to the benefits agency. The committee contended;that millions of senior citizens were left sitting empty-handed because the SSA didnt turn over the necessary payment information to the IRS in a timely fashion.;;

    The agency recently acknowledged that it had been reviewing, validating, and testing the payment records after receiving them from the SSA.;;

    Once we were free to move forward, we aggressively worked with Treasury and IRS to issue payments, he said in a statement.;;
