In some cases, we can assign your adopted child a number before the adoption is complete, but you may want to wait. Then, you can apply for the number using your child’s new name. If you want to claim your child for tax purposes while the adoption is still pending, contact the Internal Revenue Service for Form W-7A, Application for Taxpayer Identification Number for Pending U.S. Adoptions. For more information, see Social Security Numbers For Children .

Enumeration Beyond Entry

You may be eligible to apply using our automated process called Enumeration Beyond Entry if you are applying to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services for work authorization or lawful permanent resident status.

If you are unable to use Form I-765 or Form I-485, you will need to contact your local Social Security field office. Obtaining A Social Security Number

Social Security Cards Explained

The Social Security Administration assigns nine-digit Social Security numbers to U.S. citizens, permanent residents and eligible nonimmigrant workers in the United States. SSA uses SSNs to report wages to the government, track Social Security benefits and for other identification purposes. Every F and M student who U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services grants employment authorization to needs an SSN.

Please note: If an F or M student is ineligible to receive an SSN, but receives non-wage income while in the United States , they must apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number . For more information, please visit our What is an ITIN? resource page.

    Obtaining/reclaiming Your Social Security Number

Over time, the US Social Security Number has evolved from merely the number of your account for retirement savings to something akin to a single national identification number that follows you throughout your US administrative life. It is indispensable on passport applications, tax returns, financial account reporting and numerous other business forms. And now it has gone international: under FATCA banks and other financial institutions around the world are required to ask American citizen clients for an IRS Form W-9 , which includes their SSN.

For many American citizens living abroad, such requests may cause panic. They havent thought of their SSN for years . Some never had one some have lost theirs, dont remember the number, or dont even know if they ever had one. So, yet another unanticipated fallout of FATCA is the extra workload falling on American embassy and consulate Federal Benefits Units around the world.

Add to this mix the enhanced requirement for high-quality, verified documentation prior to issuing a SSN, due not only to FATCA, but to various recent laws aimed at countering fraud and fear of terrorists. The bottom-line message, particularly for Americans residing abroad, is: verify now that you and any citizen you want to claim as your dependent, have SSNs. If not, roll up your sleeves, assemble your documentation, and apply as soon as possible, because it costs time to obtain a SSN.

A Social Security number is helpful when compiling your credit history because it is the only identifier uniquely assigned to each U.S. consumer. Experian will ask for it when you order your own credit report to help ensure that we provide you a complete and accurate report. If you don’t have an SSN, however, Experian will rely on other identification elements to compile your credit history.

In addition to your Social Security number, Experian asks for other identifying information, including your name, addresses for the past two years and your date of birth. This is used to access the credit history information provided to us by your lenders so we can deliver your credit report.

Many members of the UC Berkeley community have recently received alerts from Experian that their Social Security numbers were found on the dark web, a part of the web that does not show up in online searches.

This occurred following news from the University of California about a cyberattack impacting the UC and hundreds of other organizations.

Individuals who have not yet signed up for the free credit and identity monitoring, and consequently who may not be aware of potential exposure of their information, shouldnow, said Jenn Stringer, Berkeleys associate vice chancellor for IT and chief information officer. For help with enrolling, call 617-1923 and reference engagement number DB26512.

Stringer acknowledged that receiving a message from a credit monitoring service about your Social Security number being found on the dark web can be unsettling. She received one herself and advises everyone to continue to check their notifications and follow the instructions .

The alerts provide you with important and specific information that you should then act on to help protect your credit and identity, he said. The sooner you are notified, and take action, the better.

Both Stringer and Joseph strongly recommend that individuals with their Social Security numbers found on the dark web do the following:

What Can Someone Do With Your Social Security Number

You might be wondering, What can someone do with my Social Security number? The answer is that they can do a lot, and none of it is good. An identity thief who has access to your SSN can quickly cause lots of damage to your credit score and financial situation. The thief can obtain loans and credit cards in your name, file fraudulent tax returns, and even access your bank accounts and withdraw your money. Having access to your SSN allows for easy identity theft because it becomes easy for the thief to impersonate you at financial institutions.

The ease of fraud makes Social Security numbers extremely valuable to a thief. This is one reason why there are so many scams out there that attempt to gain access to your SSN. Several government agencies like the Federal Trade Commission and others investigate these scams and attempt to stop them as quickly as possible.
