The Online Identity Verification Process

One of our most important responsibilities is protecting your investment and personal information. Social Security takes this responsibility very seriously, and we have a robust cybersecurity program in place to help us succeed. Our security process follows federal guidelines that includes additional security measures so we can be sure that you are who you say you are when you conduct online business with us.

To protect the privacy of your identity and your information, we use an identity verification process.

The process:

  • Requires you to sign in with a username and password
  • Offers extra security and
  • Complies with federal laws, regulations, and guidelines.

In addition to your username and password, you can choose either your cell phone or email address as your second identification method when you sign in to or register formySocial Security. Two forms of identification when signing in will help better protect your account from unauthorized use and potential identity fraud.

Each time you sign in to your account, you will complete two steps:

  • Enter your username and password.
  • Enter the security code we send by text message or email, depending on your choice .

If you choose to receive your one-time security code through email, you can add to your contact list to make sure it does not go into your spam or junk folder.

Will I Now Be Receiving My Benefit Payments Toward The End Of The Month Instead Of On The 3rd Of The Month

I am on social security disability . I’ve always gotten my deposit on the 3rd. With the new payment schedule for 2022 based on the date of 23rd, will I now receive mine tiward month end?

Hi. Yours is one of several questions we’ve received recently asking more or less the same thing. I can only guess that Social Security has apparently sent out some mass mailing that’s being misinterpreted by some recipients. Most people do receive their benefit payments on either the 2nd, 3rd, of 4th Wednesday of the month, but some people meet an exception to that rule that causes them to be paid on the 3rd day of the month. For more details on those exceptions, refer to the following Social Security website: .

In any case, the law regarding Social Security payment dates has not changed. Therefore, unless Social Security has been paying you on the wrong day of the month and is now making a correction, I don’t know of any reason why your payment date would change.

Best, Jerry

How Much In Benefits Am I Entitled To From My Ex

There are several factors that determine exactly how much of an ex-spouse benefit you will receive, but in general, at full retirement age, you will receive one-half of your former spouses retirement benefit assuming you meet all criteria.

If your former spouse is deceased, you will receive his or her full retirement benefit.

Social Security is gender-neutral.

Benefits criteria apply to ex-husbands as well as ex-wives.

When an ex-spouse collects benefits on a former spouses record, Social Security does not notify the ex-spouse that this is taking place.

Some of the factors that will impact how much you receive include:

  • Have you reached your full retirement age yet? If you take benefits before your full retirement age, the amount you receive will be reduced. The age for full retirement gradually increases from 65 to 67 years old depending on the year you were born.
  • If you are raising children you had with your ex-spouse and he or she passes away, you may receive benefits for their care until they are age 16. After that, they may receive benefits based on your ex-spouses work record until they are 18 or 19, and still in high school full-time. Older children may receive benefits if they are disabled.

If your ex-spouse has remarried and that new spouse is collecting benefits based on his or her work record, it will not reduce the amount of benefits the new spouse or you receive.

An ex-spouse is eligible to receive the same benefits as a current spouse if they were married to the deceased worker for at least 10 years and are not currently married. However, if the living ex-spouse remarries before age 60, they forfeit their right to their deceased former spouses Social Securityunless that subsequent marriage ended in death, divorce, or annulment. If the living ex-spouse remarries after age 60, this rule doesnt apply.

How much a spouse or former spouse receives depends on several factors including when they file for benefits and whether they are still working and earning money.
