How Do I Replace My Lost Or Stolen Social Security Card

In normal times, the best ways to apply for a replacement card are to visit the Social Security Administrations website, go to a local SSA office or apply over the phone. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all local Social Security offices were closed to the public for in-person service starting March 17, 2020. The SSA no longer allows you to order a replacement card online or over the phone.

Currently, the only way to apply for a replacement card is to fill out an application and mail it to your local SSA Field Office, along with one proof of your identity, such as your drivers license, U.S. Passport, U.S. birth certificate, U.S. Military ID, or your last Physicians report showing your date of birth.

Once you receive your replacement card, dont put it in your purse or wallet. Keep it stored securely in a safety deposit box, or at home.

Original Card For A Noncitizen Adult

In general, only noncitizens who have permission to work from the Department of Homeland Security can apply for a Social Security number . If you do not have permission to work but need an SSN for other purposes, see “If you do not have permission to work” for further information.

Enumeration Beyond Entry

You may be eligible to apply using our automated process called Enumeration Beyond Entry if you are applying to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services for work authorization or lawful permanent resident status.

Types Of Social Security Cards

We issue three types of Social Security cards. All cards show your name and Social Security number. If you are not a U.S. Citizen or lawful permanent resident, you may have a work restriction listed on your card. The chart below explains the three types of cards that we issue:

Shows your name and Social Security number and lets you work without restriction.

We issue it to:

  • People lawfully admitted to the United States on a permanent basis.

Shows your name and Social Security number with the restriction, “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION”.

You Can Apply For A Social Security Replacement Card By Mail

To apply for a new card through the mail, you will need to mail an application along with proof of your identity, such as a non-driver ID, drivers license or passport, to the Social Security Administration. These are primary evidence of your identity.;

Right now the Social Security Administration is accepting secondary proofs of identity since going without a primary form of identification is a hardship for some. The types of secondary documents accepted include health insurance card , employee or school ID or a military identification card.;

The Social Security offices have mostly been closed to the public since March 2020 and it isn’t clear;when they will fully reopen. Right now they are making limited in-person appointments but those are;reserved for critical services that cant be completed online or over the phone.

In-person help for Social Security numbers are being limited to people who are at least 12 years old and are applying for their first Social Security number card and to those who need to update or correct information, such as their name, citizenship or date of birth, so they can apply for benefits or earn an income.
