Where Do I Sign Up For Social Security

Don't Miss

Consider Setting Up Social Security Online Before Retirement Age

How To Sign Up For My Social Security Account Online

Most people wait until theyre just about to retire to sign up for Social Security online. But you may want to consider doing it much, much earlier, according to Consumer Action Center director Lori Silverman.

The reason I think it is important to sign up for my Social Security when you begin your career is you no longer will receive paper statements unless you request to have them mailed to you, Lori says. Plus, it is a way to monitor your Social Security account and keep track of how much you will receive in retirement.

And theres another big reason to sign up earlier rather than later, according to Lori.

Setting up an online account will prevent criminals from creating an account in your name and then using it to apply for benefits.

If You Work While Getting Social Security

Yes, you can work full or part-time while also getting Social Security retirement benefits. However, if you have not yet reached your full retirement age, and if your net income from working is higher than the annual earnings limit, your annual benefits will be reduced. Beginning in the month you reach full retirement age, Social Security will stop reducing your benefits no matter how much you earn.

During any full calendar year in which you are under full retirement age, Social Security deducts $1 from your benefit payments for every $2 you earn above the annual net income limit. The income limit changes every year. In 2017, the income limit was $16,920.

While your local law enforcement might not be able to find out who is responsible, having that police report or theft affidavit is very important when you attempt to correct things on the back end. In addition, you should notify the IRS, Social Security Administration, and Federal Trade Commission of the theft.

What’s The Right Move For You

If you’re signing up for Medicare at 65 because you’ve retired and need health coverage, it could mean that you also need money from Social Security to cover your bills. And so in that case, you may have to sign up in conjunction with Medicare.

But if you run your own business and need health coverage but not money, then it could pay to delay your Social Security claim beyond the age of 65. If you hold out until at least FRA, your benefits won’t take a hit, leaving you with less money for life. And if you push yourself to delay your filing past FRA, you might really enjoy a lot more financial flexibility during your senior years.

    Obtaining A Social Security Number

The Social Security Administration assigns nine-digit Social Security numbers to U.S. citizens, permanent residents and eligible nonimmigrant workers in the United States. SSA uses SSNs to report wages to the government, track Social Security benefits and for other identification purposes. Every F and M student who U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services grants employment authorization to needs an SSN.

Please note: If an F or M student is ineligible to receive an SSN, but receives non-wage income while in the United States , they must apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number . For more information, please visit our What is an ITIN? resource page.
