Can I Change My Social Security Number To Rebuild My Credit?

Under California Labor Code § 1024.6, your employer cannot fire, discriminate, retaliate, or take any adverse action against you if you update or try to update your personal information based on a lawful change of name, Social Security number, or federal employment authorization document.

Some examples of prohibited conduct by employers include:

How To Change The Name On Your Social Security Card

If you decide to change your name, you will typically need to notify the Social Security Administration. Everyone registered with the Social Security Administration who completes a legal name change, including U.S. citizens and noncitizens, should request a corrected card following a legal name change, says Terra Gross, an attorney and founder of Attuned Legal in Evanston, Illinois. The process is required so that your earnings can be reported correctly.

The steps you need to take to change your name on your Social Security card include:

Obtain documentation of the finalized legal name change.

Fill out a free Social Security card application.

Show proof of your original name and citizenship.

Read on to see what is required to make a name change and receive a new Social Security card.

Gather Documents to Verify the New Name

To change your name, youll need to have documentation that shows your new legal name. Often name changes are requested due to marriage or divorce, an error on an original birth certificate for a minor child, legal adoption, a noncitizen establishing U.S. citizenship with a name change request or a court-ordered name change, says Keisha Merritt-Grant, a claims specialist with the Social Security Administration in Chicago.

The documents that show your new name could include:

    A marriage certificate.

A court order listing the name change.

    A certificate of U.S. naturalization.

Starting your life over after domestic violence is not a simple task. If your abuser isnt behind bars, many survivors want to take every precaution to stay safe, which often means changing parts of their lifesuch as their address or their nameso that the abuser cannot track them. But, should changing your social security number be a part of those changes?

Its important for a survivor who is considering changing his or her social security number to first talk to an attorney, if possible, or a domestic violence advocate. While this change does have some benefits, says social security attorney Amy Foster of the Foster Law Firm in Arizona, its not necessarily a simple or pain-free process.

Changing your social security number helps with financial abuse because can’t get credit cards and credit without the right social security number, says Foster. She advises survivors to put alerts on his or her credit so theyre alerted anytime someone tries to open an account with their social security number.

However, know that, in terms of hiding, a new social security number wont be a foolproof solution. If you have a common name, this works, but you still have a birthday that your abuser can use , says Foster. If you have an unique name, then this doesnt do much good unless you change your name as well.

Will Changing My Gender With Ssa Affect My Health Benefits

Changing your gender marker with Social Security will typically not affect private health insurance. While some insurance plans may automatically refuse coverage of services that appear inconsistent with a gender marker in the plans records, private plans generally do not base their gender data on, or match it with, Social Security records.

However, if a person is enrolled in Medicare, or the Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income programs, their insurance record will be based on Social Security data. In that case, they may experience automatic refusals for coverage of services that appear inconsistent with a gender marker in Social Security records. This type of denial can usually be resolved by having your providers office either add a specific billing code, contact the plan, or help you request a formal coverage determination.

Other Reasons For Changing A Social Security Number

There are several other reasons that the SSA will issue a new number. For example, it may approve a change if similar numbers within a family unit cause confusion or if two identical numbers have been issued in error. If you have a religious objection to a certain number or sequence of numbers in your current SSN, you may also qualify for a change.

        Understanding The Social Security Administration

Social Security is a vital part of the retirement income planning strategy of many Americans, particularly as savings rates remain low . However, the breadth of services the SSA provides spans many vital areas of the U.S. social safety net. In January 2021, for example, nearly 70 million Americans, including retired workers, disabled workers, and survivors, received more than $1 trillion in Social Security benefits, according to the SSA.

The benefits are funded with payroll taxes of employers, employees, and the self-employed. The SSA administers the Social Security program, arguably one of the most successful agencies in the history of the U.S. government. The annual net cost of Social Security comes in at approximately $400 billion as of 2021, which is roughly 12.2% of all government spending, according to

Unlike the majority of U.S. federal government agencies, the SSA is not headquartered in Washington, D.C. Instead, the agency is based in the city of Woodlawn, Maryland, which is a suburb of Baltimore. In all, the Social Security Administration has 10 regional offices, six processing centers, and approximately 1,230 field offices in cities across the country. It employs over 60,000 workers and frequently ranks well in government job ratings.
