How The Social Security Cola Is Calculated

5 Social Security Card Married Name Change Tips

The annual Social Security COLA is based on the change in prices of a market basket of goods. To measure these changes, SSA uses the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers .

For the 2022 COLA, SSA measured the change in the average CPI-W index from July, August and September of 2020 to the average CPI-W index for the same three-month span in 2021. The percentage change between the two quarterly averages is the COLA starting in January 2022.

The 2022 COLA was so large because prices of goods and services have significantly increased in the past year, due in part to extreme weather and COVID-19 outbreaks, which have driven up energy prices and strained the worlds supply chains.

Since Congress initiated automatic annual COLAs in 1975, there have been three years in which benefits didn’t increase at all: 2010, 2011 and 2016. The single biggest increase, 14.3 percent, went into effect in January 1981.

The Importance Of Protecting Your Sin

Your SIN is confidential. You should not use it as identification or provide it for job applications, rental applications, etc. See Protecting your social insurance number for information on:

Starting The Process Of Changing The Name On Your Social Security Card

The agency that manages your Social Security information is called the Social Security Administration, or SSA. As you can imagine, they manage information for millions of people across the country, so their backlog of work can be great at times. Changing your name with the SSA can be a hassle if you are not sure where to start however, if you follow the correct process, it should be a simple and painless task.

The Social Security Administration will require proof of your name change. They need to make absolutely certain of a couple of things before they will change the name on your card and send you a new one. First, you will need to prove your identity. This prevents someone from contacting the SSA and changing someone elses name without their knowledge.

Next, you will need to prove that your name has legally changed. You are not allowed to simply contact SSA and request a name change because you want to be called by a different name. Without the proper legal documents like a marriage certificate or divorce decree, then the SSA cannot validate that your name has, in fact, legally changed. Before requesting a Social Security card name change, make sure that you have gone through the process of legally changing your name first. Again, this could be due to marriage, divorce, or the legal name change process.

Now that you know what is required before starting the process, you can dive into the details of getting your new name onto your card.

Why Is It Important To Keep The Social Security Number Private

Social Security Card 04 SSN DOWNLOAD

The information contained within the SSC, including the SSN, is sensitive in nature. Consider it as your tracking number. The IRS uses it for processing tax returns. Youre not supposed to disclose it and are not required to carry the card everywhere either.

This number can be easily misused if fallen into the wrong hands. It can be used to access your bank accounts, credit reports, and tax information without your consent. Therefore, treat the privacy of your SSN and SSC with the utmost care and never disclose it over the phone or email unless completely sure that youre dealing with the right people.

Who Should Report Naturalization To Social Security

Ill say that just about everyone should update their social security record with the SSA.

Of course, if you were born a U.S. citizen this would not apply to you so Im just referring to immigrants who were previously permanent residents.

When you notify SSA about your naturalization, they will update their database to show you as a U.S. citizen instead of a lawful permanent resident.

They may also update your social security card so that it no longer has Valid with work authorization only written on it.

This database is shared with all federal agencies and many state agencies as well. This allows them to validate your U.S. citizen status with the federal and state governments.

Your status is also updated in the E-verify database that The Department of Homeland Security uses for employment eligibility.

Remember when you first got your social security card? It may have had some fine print stating that it was only good if you also had work authorization. After you update your status change, they may allow you to get an updated SSA card without this wording.

Rising Prices Lead To Biggest Cost

by John Waggoner, AARP, October 13, 2021

The Social Security Administration announced Oct. 13 that its annual cost-of-living adjustment will be 5.9 percent, a boost to average retirement benefits of about $92 per month for individuals, starting in January. The 2022 COLA is the largest increase to Social Security benefits since the 7.4 percent hike that went into effect in January 1983. Until this year, COLAs have been modest, averaging a 1.65 percent increase annually over the past decade, with no gain at all to benefits in 2016. The increase that went into effect in January 2021 was 1.3 percent.

Todays announcement of a 5.9 percent COLA increase, the largest increase in four decades, is crucial for Social Security beneficiaries and their families as they try to keep up with rising costs, says AARP Chief Executive Officer Jo Ann Jenkins. The guaranteed benefits provided by Social Security and the COLA increase are more crucial than ever as millions of Americans continue to face the health and economic impacts of the pandemic. Social Security is the largest source of retirement income for most Americans and provides nearly all income for 1 in 4 seniors.

Social Security And Medicare Part B Premiums

Most Social Security recipients will see their COLA reduced by an increase in the cost of Medicare. Medicare Part B premiums, which cover physician visits and outpatient medical services, are typically deducted directly from Social Security benefit payments. The 2022 monthly premium for Medicare Part B recipients has yet to be announced the standard premium in 2021 is $148.50 per month. An increase of about $10 is projected for 2022. Given its importance to income security, policymakers should work together to ensure the long-term solvency and adequacy of Social Security and to protect the hard-earned benefits of millions of Americans and their families, Jenkins says. Congress must also complete ongoing work to protect seniors by reducing one of their fastest rising costs high drug prices and expanding access to needed dental, hearing and vision coverage in Medicare.

Cola Increases By Year

Note: COLA changes take effect the next Jan. 1

YEAR

Social Security is funded by a payroll tax of 12.4 percent on eligible wages employees pay 6.2 percent and employers pay the other 6.2 percent . Next year, the maximum amount of wage earnings subject to the Social Security tax will increase to $147,000 from $142,800 in 2021. The money paid in by today’s workers goes to cover current benefits, with any excess going into the Social Security Trust Fund.

Because there are fewer workers relative to the growing number of Social Security beneficiaries, the Social Security system is facing increased stress. In their 2021 annual report, Social Security’s Trustees estimated that if no legislative action is taken, the trust fund for retired workers and their survivors will run short of money in 2033. Even at that point, over three-quarters of benefits could still be paid out from incoming payroll taxes. A separate Trust Fund that pays disability benefits is projected to run short of money in 2057.
